Model Overview:

It's no exaggeration to say that the BMW 5 Series sets the standard for premium sport sedans. Introduced for the 1972 model year, the midsize 5 Series has long offered a near-perfect blend of performance, luxury and interior room. It's also highly regarded for its refined styling and innovative technology features.

Most BMW 5 Series models you'll come across will be rear-wheel-drive sedans, though you'll stumble upon the occasional 5 Series wagon on the used car market. In addition, all-wheel drive has been optional for some time, and many used sedans in colder climes will be so equipped. Traditionally, the 5 Series has featured an inline six-cylinder gasoline engine, but BMW has also offered V8 engines, turbocharged four-cylinders and even diesel-powered options. When people ask us to recommend luxury cars, the BMW 5 Series is invariably high on the list, new or used.

  • Ive loved this one - 2001 BMW 5-Series

Bought this car new and have kept it 10 years. Have the manual transmission. Has been a dream to drive. Have had some maintenance issues, (blown radiator, fan, lights, replaced almost all suspension parts) and its really costly to get repaired. So, I went to the dealer to drive the new 2011 535, what a disappointment. The new one has more power, but has lost the great driving feel. It is just a completely different car than the old one. I guess Ill just drive my 2001 until the wheels fall off.

  • An economical BMW? - 2007 BMW 5-Series
    By -

We bought a base 07 525i with 19k miles through the BMW CPO program in May 2008. We liked the looks, practicality, and BMW performance at a reasonable price. The scheduled maintenance program and warranty were icing on the cake. Over the last two and a half years, we have found that the combination of reliability, low maintenance costs, and amazingly good fuel mileage (consistently 20 city, 33 highway MPG) has made this a very economical car. Its a typical German cruiser on the interstate(autobahn) -- fast, smooth, and tracks beautifully. As a result of our experience, we have designated this car our secret "economy car" in luxury car clothes. I will consider BMW CPO again.

  • Refined, Capable, & Liveable - 2011 BMW 5-Series

I gave up on BMW when the first i drive and Bangle-but cars came out, but am glad to report the new 5 series has returned to the fold of the prior generation cars with graceful lines and intuitive logical controls. The i drive is easy to use now after a few minutes of familiarization, actually quite fun. Quality is good and fuel economy is remarkable, getting 24 in town and 30-plus highway with a light foot- near diesel/hybrid territory! The ride with the run flats is very good now, and the car has a level of quiet and refinement thats almost too good (a little sport exhaust maybe?) Performance with only 240HP is quick with the 8 speed, but I wasnt looking for a rocket. Very Pleased!!!

  • Awesome car - 2011 BMW 5-Series
    By -

I have had the car for two months now. Love the car interior design. The seats are comfortable. The car rides very quiet and solid. Excellent acceleration and handling. The 16 speakers 600 watts sound system is awesome. I wish the split rear seat come standard. My first BMW and I really enjoy driving it.

  • The Ultimate Driving Machine - 2011 BMW 5-Series

Have the car for 2 months 3k miles now. Very fun car to drive. Very quiet and solid but comfortable ride.Surprisingly just as quiet as my Lexus. Excellent performance and handling. Acceleration is like a rocket with the Turbocharge. The Goodyear Runflat 18" tires are very smooth and quiet. The upgraded 600 watts sound system is great. Love the big screen Nav. system. Love the Dealership I bought it from, make the ownership experience feel "Ultimate".

  • Best Car Ive ever owned - 2000 BMW 5-Series
    By -

I bought my wagon at 1.5 years old from a BMW dealer. It had 10,600 miles & was CPO. 9 years later it has just under 30K miles, & still looks & drives like new. I had 2 repairs under warranty a brake sensor, & a broken door handle. At warranty end, I started taking it to an excellent indie bmw shop. During that time, the only repairs have been: the tailgate latch failed twice, costing $200-$300 each time. And now A/C needs recharge or repair, Im a bit nervous about that. But all in all, to spend only around $1k in 9 years on maintenance & repairs on an expensive Euro car I consider amazing. (I owned a used Range Rover-under warranty!-it cost me that in one year).

  • Love / Hate - 2004 BMW 5-Series
    By -

I love and hate this car. the signalers still drive me nuts, there is no temperature gauge, cabin storage, cant set the radio because of the stupid I-Drive, cup holders from Hell, cant see the speedometer through the steering wheel, Setting the climate control is almost impossible (I-Drive again), Nothing about the controls is intuitive (I previously drove an Infiniti, which practically drove itself). That said, I have never driven a car that handles anywhere as well as this BMW 530i. Just give me an open road, a Valentine 1 radar detector and I am a very happy boy. I have owned this car for over 4 years and have no plans to trade or sell it. I hope to put another 100,000 miles on it!

  • Best certifed used car I have ever owned - 2004 BMW 5-Series
    By -

I remember hearing the words "the ultimate driving experience" and I can tell you that my 2004 530i bought in 2007 with 19,138 miles on it has been the best vehicle I have ever owned....hands down! I have had no problems with this car and it drives effortlessly. Great gas mileage and fun to drive at high speeds.

  • Buy the extended warranty - 2002 BMW 5-Series
    By -

Bought the car with 19K on it. within a week it had a complete electronic failure and lost all systems. Fortunately it was under warranty. Since then, have has several expensive repairs, expansion tank, radiator, Alternator, secondary cooling fan, and miscellaneous other repairs. Always over $500 per visit. Nice car but always something breaking.

  • Great When Not in for Service - 2008 BMW 5-Series
    By -

Comfortable, fun to drive and looks great. Its loaded with the Premium, Cold Weather and Sports package. I really do enjoy driving this to work and longer distances. My only complaint is how many times the car has been in the shop. Although I enjoy the car, this will most likely be my last BMW purchase. I cant justify all the service visits even though Im not paying a dime. My previous car, which was a Nissan, was much better in this area.
