Model Overview:

It's no exaggeration to say that the BMW 5 Series sets the standard for premium sport sedans. Introduced for the 1972 model year, the midsize 5 Series has long offered a near-perfect blend of performance, luxury and interior room. It's also highly regarded for its refined styling and innovative technology features.

Most BMW 5 Series models you'll come across will be rear-wheel-drive sedans, though you'll stumble upon the occasional 5 Series wagon on the used car market. In addition, all-wheel drive has been optional for some time, and many used sedans in colder climes will be so equipped. Traditionally, the 5 Series has featured an inline six-cylinder gasoline engine, but BMW has also offered V8 engines, turbocharged four-cylinders and even diesel-powered options. When people ask us to recommend luxury cars, the BMW 5 Series is invariably high on the list, new or used.

The absolute best car I have ever driven, and some of the cars I have driven include the Q45, Lexus LS400, Saab 95 and the Acura RL. The handling is unreal, it takes turns like you would not believe. I mean what can you say about the the ultimate driving machine, other than it really is the ultimate driving machine.

This car is the best handling and nicest car I have owned. It is smooth when accelerating and the handling is impressive. The navigation is solid and I did not personally have a issue with the iDrive system. Anyone with computer mouse experience and the ability to conquer Microsoft Windows will find the iDrive system easy to use. My only advice is to stay away from the Performance Package with the run flat tires if you dont want to feel like your running over a speed bump by just running over a cigarette butt.

  • 2002 530i, a fabulous ride - 2002 BMW 5-Series

This BMW 530i is so much fun! Its a remarkable combination of comfortable ride and great handling. I dont feel like Im in a mushmobile (typical Accord, Lexus, Infinity, etc.,), and I can actually feel the road surface through the steering wheel. But yet, its also comfortable on a long road trip. My car has the standard suspension, so I cant say if the sport version is much harsher. In 8 months, this car has been absolutely flawless. I highly recommend the adjustable lumbar supports in the seats, an inexpensive option. And the Xenon headlights are great for those of us whose vision is deteriorating with age.

She is a 1992 535i 5 speed. I have owner her since 1999 and havent had any major problems at all. She now has 215,000 miles on her and runs really strong. I changed the clutch and throw- out bearing at 180,000 miles. That cost $800. I did the front-end and replaced all the gastket including the head gasket at 200,000. was around $2000.00. She rides like a brand new car, people are always asking me what year it is and when i say 92 they are like wow, and everyong always compliment the smooth ride. She has great power and with the 5 speed its alot of fun, I added 17 inch wheels and now she handle awesome.

  • BMW saved my life - 2002 BMW 5-Series

I had my BMW only 4 months when I was in a car accident and the car was totalled. I was hit on the front driver side and the car ended upside down in a ditch. The towing company said there wasnt one part of the car that could be salvaged. I walked away from the accident with a minor scape on the elbow and a sore neck. I am lucky to be alive let alone not injured. I am not that crazy about cars but this is the first car that I really enjoyed driving. I loved everything about it and I cant wait to buy the same car again. Thank you BMW.

I bought this 540iA with sports package in Jan 2001. Car is a wonderful machine to drive, even if it is a compact car. Being a compact car, it is a bit cramped inside, but on the other hand it is a smaller car, and easier to maneuver in traffic. Mine is a 2001, but even so, being a 282 hp machine, you really need to be careful with the gas pedal, or else its going to fly on you in the next tree. Basically the car is a 8 cylinder compact car, with wonderful handling.

  • Cant go wrong. - 1995 BMW 5-Series

This was my first Bimmer, and I gotta tell ya, it is NICE. Smooth as silk on the highway, and the traction control really keeps you on the road in crappy conditions. So far, its been pretty reliable. The only repair Ive had to make was the fuel pump (quit at 125K) which was not that big of a deal. I got into an accident with this car, and WOW. I honestly believe this car saved my life. Worth the price for the safety alone!

  • 1995 540i w/ Six Speed Manual Tranny - 1995 BMW 5-Series
    By -

With a budget of $20,000, I went to a couple of dealerships and drove some nice cars, like a 2000 Maxima and a 2002 Altima. First, I really dont like front wheel drive cars, which doesnt leave one with many options these days. Plus these cars (even the Maxima) seemed a bit sluggish. Then, I found a 95 BMW 5401 w/ a six-speed manual tranny. I asked about it and the salesguy said, "Oh, its a manual shift...we cant seem to sell it." Well, for me...a six-speed is a real selling point. I took it for a spin and I couldnt believe the torque from that beast ! It had soooo much power and it handled so much better than the other cars I had driven.
