Overview & Reviews
It's no exaggeration to say that the BMW 5 Series sets the standard for premium sport sedans. Introduced for the 1972 model year, the midsize 5 Series has long offered a near-perfect blend of performance, luxury and interior room. It's also highly regarded for its refined styling and innovative technology features.
Most BMW 5 Series models you'll come across will be rear-wheel-drive sedans, though you'll stumble upon the occasional 5 Series wagon on the used car market. In addition, all-wheel drive has been optional for some time, and many used sedans in colder climes will be so equipped. Traditionally, the 5 Series has featured an inline six-cylinder gasoline engine, but BMW has also offered V8 engines, turbocharged four-cylinders and even diesel-powered options. When people ask us to recommend luxury cars, the BMW 5 Series is invariably high on the list, new or used.

Good solid Car - 1990 BMW 5-Series
By C. G. B. - June 2 - 2:00 amThis is just about the best over the road car i have ever owned. Great power and handling, Rock solid on the road. Only a few small problems in the year I have owned it. Watch out for the HVAC fan on used ones, fan only works on full blast. Power door locks also are easily broken.

An Inexpensive Luxery - 1991 BMW 5-Series
By Elebaster - May 27 - 2:00 amAfter having this auto for 6 months, I have no regrets. It is comfortable, reliable and has enough power to navigate big city traffic with ease. The only problem is that it goes around 20.0 MPG and requires premium (93 octane) petrol.

Total package - 1999 BMW 5-Series
By Wonder42 - May 27 - 2:00 amSold an Audi S4 to get into the 540i. Yes, I certainly miss the Quattro in the winter but, in nice weather, the 540i provides an unsurpassed performance driving experience - gobs of torque, great brakes, unflappable suspension and super accurate steering response. All of this - combined with a quiet, luxurious cabin with room for five - cant imagine the M5s capabilities!!

2001 540iA - 2001 BMW 5-Series
By timmcgarry - May 22 - 2:00 amThe 540iA automobile is one of the finer cars I have had the pleasure to drive. The handling and cornering is the best I have had experienced on an automobile. My sole complaint is centered on the stability of the automatic transmission. It slips. Several trips to the dealer have failed to resolve the problem permanently.

This is the ultimate driving machine? - 2001 BMW 5-Series
By bardi - May 21 - 2:00 amThis car drives well but suffers in the reliability category. Something seems to go wrong every month. Numerous attempts to fix the same problem seem to have failed. Build quality is poor relative to price. Of course, when the car isnÂ’t in the shop it does drive like a BMW should.

Best overall Sports Sedan - 2016 BMW 5-Series
By Robert In OPKS - May 19 - 2:44 amThis is my third 2012, 2014, and 2016 BMW 550 Xdrive. It ranks tops in more segments against other GS, the Audi A6, the MB E550. It had power to spare with all wheel drive system that manages all conditions well. Previous vehicle was a 2006 Mercedes E-55. I have two kids both on car seats which makes the rear a tight space.

Glad I bought it!! - 1998 BMW 5-Series
By earl8 - May 15 - 2:00 amI just traded in my 1995 Volvo 850 T5R after having it for 4 years... what was I waiting for!! I have always admired BMWs, but never a serious admirer until now!! I looked at the Q45, the GS 300 and the E430, but got a good deal on the BWM w/ relatively low miles for the year. Its as quiet as a cat and I like the overall smooth ride. Not crazy about the dreaded cupholders, the climate controls are a little strange, but minor complaints about a great vehicle. I feel like I finally arrived!!! Thanks BMW!!
