Model Overview:

It's no exaggeration to say that the BMW 5 Series sets the standard for premium sport sedans. Introduced for the 1972 model year, the midsize 5 Series has long offered a near-perfect blend of performance, luxury and interior room. It's also highly regarded for its refined styling and innovative technology features.

Most BMW 5 Series models you'll come across will be rear-wheel-drive sedans, though you'll stumble upon the occasional 5 Series wagon on the used car market. In addition, all-wheel drive has been optional for some time, and many used sedans in colder climes will be so equipped. Traditionally, the 5 Series has featured an inline six-cylinder gasoline engine, but BMW has also offered V8 engines, turbocharged four-cylinders and even diesel-powered options. When people ask us to recommend luxury cars, the BMW 5 Series is invariably high on the list, new or used.

  • Love my wagon! - 2001 BMW 5-Series

Wen my wife and I were about to have our first child a couple of years ago, we looked at every SUV on the market. Nothing satisfied us, plus the fuel mileage for the SUVs was horrible. My wife then suggested a BMW wagon. We went to the dealership, and I was pleasantly surprised! We have the sport package that makes the car sit a bit lower with nice low-profile tires. It also has tight steering due to the sport package. I feel comfortable driving this car even when the kids (we have since had another one) are not in the car.

I was going to buy the 325i, but changed my mind with a week before I actually bought the 525i. With the new design coming out next month, this car is by far the best value out there if you are looking to buy a BMW right now. Great car to drive for years. Test drive one and turn a few corners, youll understand why.

I bought my 2001 530i in January and have been to the dealer 6 times for different problems. I live 80 miles from the dealer and when something goes wrong, I have to wait 10 days to get a free loaner and service. I am looking for a different car. This is my second Bimmer and I hate to say maybe my last.

  • greatest 6 cylinder wagon ever made - 1994 BMW 5-Series

After exhaustive research,I bought my used 1994 silver wagon with over 35,000 miles on it from the BMW dealership with warranty still in effect since this model and 740 shared the same engine block which had a defect.BMW changed all the engine blocks on the 740s and 530s for those manufactured between 94-97. Great looks inside and out, leather interior beautiful wood, power windows, fold down second row, sunroof opens over the front passengers or second row, and cargo net in the back. This car drives beautifully, never had any serious repairs. This car now has over 95,000 miles and I still love it.

This car was bought used which saved quite a bit of money. It is very quiet, comfortable and very easy to shift this 5-speed. It is very enjoyable to drive and has great acceleration and handling. The A/C and Heater work very quickly. The backseat leg room is good and trunk space is plenty. Maintenance - the thermostat has been replaced 3 times at no cost and the water pump was replaced after 5 years. The scheduled maintenance for BMWs is a bit pricey but they take care of so many items at one time to keep the car running well.

I just purchased this car, and man what a fun ride! The only thing that I can complain about is those stinking cupholders!

I bought this car used from a friend that has taken great care of it. Very roomy inside. Much better than a 3 series. V8 engine that provides good top end power and has the fuel economy to prove it. A little slow out of the gate though. Maintenance is a real problem. Its hard to get the parts to fix it ourself and the guys down at the shop want too much. Ive had a lot of problems with oil leaks and each time I go in to have them fixed, it costs me around $500.

I am a car lover, and own 4 cars. The BMW is the most refined of any car I have ever owned. Excellent service with only oil changes and routine maintenance required. The comfort and handling are very good.

  • wonderful 528i - 1997 BMW 5-Series

Best car I have ever owned! Not one problem in 60,000 miles. Gets 30 mpg on the highway and 25 to 27mpg just running around. The guality is superb and the car is worth every penny! It rides and drives just like it did when new. 80 mph feels like 55 mph. No wind noise and SOLID at high speeds.

I have always wanted a 95 540i 6 spd manual, and was finally able to afford one. This car is amazing in every mannar. It is by far the best car you can purchase for under 15K, hands down. Extremely reliable, and awesome performance. I am just changing the wheels, and getting a ltd slip diff. Besides that, this car is better than any new 2002 or 2003 below 40K. Save your money, find a 540i 6spd and buy it if you can find it.
