It's no exaggeration to say that the BMW 5 Series sets the standard for premium sport sedans. Introduced for the 1972 model year, the midsize 5 Series has long offered a near-perfect blend of performance, luxury and interior room. It's also highly regarded for its refined styling and innovative technology features.
Most BMW 5 Series models you'll come across will be rear-wheel-drive sedans, though you'll stumble upon the occasional 5 Series wagon on the used car market. In addition, all-wheel drive has been optional for some time, and many used sedans in colder climes will be so equipped. Traditionally, the 5 Series has featured an inline six-cylinder gasoline engine, but BMW has also offered V8 engines, turbocharged four-cylinders and even diesel-powered options. When people ask us to recommend luxury cars, the BMW 5 Series is invariably high on the list, new or used.

Awesome - 2003 BMW 5-Series

That it manages to be so comfortable and refined as well is not only a great benefit, but it practically boggles the mind how they were able to accomplish both these seemingly polar characteristics. The car is always composed, even when making maneuvers that would outwit some sports cars, let alone luxury sedans. The interior is quiet and refined, yet revving the engine is sweet music. The precision and linearity of the brakes, throttle, and steering are simply amazing.

My 9th Bimmer with no surprises - 2003 BMW 5-Series
By Bimman - August 13 - 10:00 amPicked up my 6 speed Black on Black in April 2003, with no surprises. Ive got 5,000 road miles already. This car is truly a great performer. Ive had BMWs from 1983 to now and the improvements in performance has come a long way. This by far is the best E39 Ive had. The more mileage this car gets, the better it runs.

I still get 2nd looks and compliments 2 years later mainly because of the M-style wheels that came with the early Sports Package.

Great Car! - 2006 BMW 5-Series
By 714-530xi - August 10 - 5:16 am530xi is a wonderful car to own and drive. Handling is incredible and has plenty of power. Great control at high speeds and through aggressive cornering. Steptronic shifts very smooth during rapid acceleration. Nice ride while still having a good feel of the road. Interior is comfortable and not overdone with bling. Love the iDrive, which is also fun for new passengers to navigate menus.

one word: problems - 2002 BMW 5-Series
By DallasDriver - August 9 - 2:00 amI love the car (525i with M sports package manual) when I actually get to drive it and when it works. It spent more time in the service dept than with me (hence the low mileage). The svc. dept. rep. knows me on a first name basis. Took it twice for the air bag light once for a problem with the drivers seat 4 times for a clutch problem (which has not been solved yet). Im in the process of looking for a new car. Definitely NOT a BMW.
