Model Overview:

It's no exaggeration to say that the BMW 5 Series sets the standard for premium sport sedans. Introduced for the 1972 model year, the midsize 5 Series has long offered a near-perfect blend of performance, luxury and interior room. It's also highly regarded for its refined styling and innovative technology features.

Most BMW 5 Series models you'll come across will be rear-wheel-drive sedans, though you'll stumble upon the occasional 5 Series wagon on the used car market. In addition, all-wheel drive has been optional for some time, and many used sedans in colder climes will be so equipped. Traditionally, the 5 Series has featured an inline six-cylinder gasoline engine, but BMW has also offered V8 engines, turbocharged four-cylinders and even diesel-powered options. When people ask us to recommend luxury cars, the BMW 5 Series is invariably high on the list, new or used.

Great all around sports sedan. Performance, comfort, and exceptional build quality. Dealer experience for maintenance has been stellar. I am hooked on BMW.

Fantastic vehicle. Two years after the fact it still brings a smile. Great acceleration, smooth ride, good looks.Replaced stock differential with Dinan 3.15, added other Dinan upgrades.Acceleration from 70 mph to 120 is amazing.Wish the car had a bit more rear leg room. Only minor maintenence problems with light bulbs, key losing initiation and aux. fan. OEM Dunlaps fair, replacement Bridgestone Pole Position SO4s poor, Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s by far the best. Has held its value well, by far the best car Ive ever owned.

Driving this car is just plain fun. Handling is excellent. The new 255HP engine is very responsive, with plenty of power. Comfort seats are worth the extra money, very comfortable and easily adjustable. Quality control seems to have improved since introduction of the e60 model in 2004. I-Drive is not as difficult as many reviewers have made it out to be. The learning curve varies as to how much you have used a computer. It allows the dash to have a cleaner look to it. So far, the car has been a pleasure to drive and own.

  • This isnt your mothers wagon! - 2003 BMW 5-Series

While it is true the sport suspension gives you precise feedback, I find the handling and roadfeel to be one of the best characteristics of the car. For those who are looking for a true perfomance car with the practicality of a wagon look no further. Put four snow tires on the car and winter is no issue. For those seeking to drive your living room this is not the car for you. The BMW 540ia wagon sets the standard for fit and finish among its rivals, and passes them in so other many characteristics and qualities. This is a car I can drive for 8 hours continually arriving without an ache.

This is by far the best automobile I have ever owned. They call the BMW the ultimate driving machinem and they have the right to do so.

  • NEVER A BMW - 2011 BMW 5-Series

We bought a 2011 bmw 528i while it was under warranty. We started to have issues right after that. Pulling right, Electronics freezing, can not unlock the doors with key fob, can not get out from car because door handles do not work time to time and our 2 year old son got locked inside(car locked by it self) and we had to break the window which took almost 30 minutes. BMW said they could not find any problem and went even further some of the issues are features of the car. Our kids getting locked in the car is a serious issue, Can not getting from the car is another serious issue. What if car catches a fire in an accident and we get stuck in the car. We are filing a law suit and also there is one already pending for the same issue. There is lots of compaints for the same issues but they do not want to admit. DO NOT BUY BMW especially if you have kids.

  • Buy a different car! - 1997 BMW 5-Series

I thought that a BMW was the way to go after running my Honda Accord into the ground at 235,000 miles. The total amount of money that I had spent on repairs that I had done on the Accord were just about what I have spent on repairs in just one month on this car! It is ridiculous...I am in the shop literally every other month and there are still things that I need to get done to it. I was impressed by the "name" and safety record of these cars, but am now just figuring out how to get rid of it!

  • Death by cupholder rage - 2002 BMW 5-Series

Best car there is. I bought it in Germany, took it down the Autobahn, got it up to 140 mph. Car sat on the road rock solid and seemed to say to me "Now what?" It wanted to go faster but speed limiter said no. This car is awesome and the curves are gorgeous. The blue color looks wonderful at night, but kind of blah purply in bright sunlight. The seats are comfortable and the instrumentation is logically placed. Only bad thing is the cupholders are absolute crap. Wont even hold a soda can - BMW should not have put them in if they couldnt design them right. One of mine is alread broken from holding my narrow-based coffee cup.

  • Love our BMW! - 2000 BMW 5-Series

Purchased used (a one owner lease return) 528I w/sports package and 38,500 miles last year. Have driven it for 10,000 miles and it has been flawless. I have never owned an automobile that felt soooo secure - this car really handles. Previously owned a Saab and a couple of Volvos. My wife drives it every day - I get to drive it on trips - she says she never wants to own another car make - only BMW (and I dont disagree!)

  • Uber Wagon - 2001 BMW 5-Series

Not only the best wagon on the market, but the best car. The wagon actually gives you 50/50 weight distribution. Handles better than the sedan. The extra torque of the 540 is worth the investment. I have used it to haul and road trips, etc. Did a euro delivery too, so got to drive it on home turf. Seeing euro delivery is actually cheaper, one would be crazy not to buy that way. New wagons wont be available (E60) til 2005-06.
