Model Overview:

It's no exaggeration to say that the BMW 5 Series sets the standard for premium sport sedans. Introduced for the 1972 model year, the midsize 5 Series has long offered a near-perfect blend of performance, luxury and interior room. It's also highly regarded for its refined styling and innovative technology features.

Most BMW 5 Series models you'll come across will be rear-wheel-drive sedans, though you'll stumble upon the occasional 5 Series wagon on the used car market. In addition, all-wheel drive has been optional for some time, and many used sedans in colder climes will be so equipped. Traditionally, the 5 Series has featured an inline six-cylinder gasoline engine, but BMW has also offered V8 engines, turbocharged four-cylinders and even diesel-powered options. When people ask us to recommend luxury cars, the BMW 5 Series is invariably high on the list, new or used.

To me, this is a big car - just as long and heavy as our full sized mini-van. Drives very well and easy around town. I live in Europe (US spec) so tons of fun on autobahn. Easy driving at 130mph with (sleeping) wife and two kids. Night vision is a hoot, but well see how useful it is. Owners manual is a tome, but worth the read, esp the voice command section. Once set up iDrive is no issue; though my wife has yet to tackle it.

  • Great Car! - 1998 BMW 5-Series

Bought this car with 47,000 obviously well cared for miles on it. Great speed and handling with nearly every conceivable luxury. As previously mentioned cupholder are nearly worthless but not that important to me. Service light has a mind of its own and I wish it would burn out. Why there is a gas economy gage and no oil pressure gauge is a mystery to me. You dont buy this model for great fuel economy. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone who is looking for a sports sedan. You probably better buy the extended warranty though just to be safe.

  • This car is years ahead of all brands. - 2005 BMW 5-Series

Whats all the hype over I-Drive. Its a great device to set-up your car the way you want it. How many other cars allow this type of programming? 6 & 7 series. It only takes a few minutes to learn. Its wonderful once you master it. A blast to drive with a quiet compliant ride. This is my 3rd BMW in 5 years.

    all around an excellent car

  • fun, but unreliable - 2000 BMW 5-Series

It looks good, a bit underpowered, but is fun to drive. However, its reliability is very poor, especially if you owned a Japanese car before. Also, the dealership is always busy, and with its reliability, you might as well onw a second car, otherwise youll be renting alot (the dealership never has any loaner cars).

Everything about the car is great, I just wish it had a little more power.

  • Awesome Experience!!! - 2003 BMW 5-Series

Without a doubt this is a awesome automobile. I love the joy getting behind the sports steering wheel. From those beautiful/masculine 17" wheels, sports package, premium package and the very cool xenon headlights to the cold winter package I love how the car handles, how the engine responds cruising at 70mph and its ability to zoom up to a higher speed in a matter of seconds. The only problem is finding the time to drive as much as Id like.

  • My wife hates it??? - 1998 BMW 5-Series
    By -

This is the finest car I have ever owned. Recently we moved to NC where almost everyone drives a truck, so of course I talked my wife into trading in her 94 Volvo 850 turbo wagon in on a new Tundra which I now drive, giving her the privledge of driving the BMW. She hates it??? She claims the most comfortable seats in the world are hurting her legs, and the dash controls are too complicated. I keep offering to let her have the truck, but she doesnt want to drive something that big everyday. We will soon be trading in this beautiful classic for a new Cross Country, breaking my 18 year streak of owning BMWs. Its too bad the truck is so practical.
