Model Overview:

It's no exaggeration to say that the BMW 5 Series sets the standard for premium sport sedans. Introduced for the 1972 model year, the midsize 5 Series has long offered a near-perfect blend of performance, luxury and interior room. It's also highly regarded for its refined styling and innovative technology features.

Most BMW 5 Series models you'll come across will be rear-wheel-drive sedans, though you'll stumble upon the occasional 5 Series wagon on the used car market. In addition, all-wheel drive has been optional for some time, and many used sedans in colder climes will be so equipped. Traditionally, the 5 Series has featured an inline six-cylinder gasoline engine, but BMW has also offered V8 engines, turbocharged four-cylinders and even diesel-powered options. When people ask us to recommend luxury cars, the BMW 5 Series is invariably high on the list, new or used.

I purchased mine new - made to order and got delivery in June 2001. I live in the SFO -CA area. Every day has been a pleasure. I have 12K miles - been to Lake Tahoe (twice), Laguna Beach and the ride keeps getting better. More than 3 instances of absolute strangers telling me that it is a beautiful looking car - I couldnt agree more ! No Regrets at all !

Ive owned this car since new, and after three and one-half years and 108,000 miles still feels like a new car. The ride on the sport suspension is solid as a rock with Bridgestone Pole Position S-03s it goes around corners like its on rails, yet is quiet on the highway. At a steady 65 mph will deliver 32+ mpg. Outstanding for a car that can do 0-60 in under 8 seconds and is capable of cruising all day at 90 mph with incredible comfort.

  • Drive the xDrive 550i! - 2016 BMW 5-Series

The all new BMW 5 series is equipped with a lot of new features along with a variety of standard features. With a shocking 445 horsepower and a 4.4L V8 engine, this BMW is built for speed. In the previous models the 5 series had the available option for an auto-stop start system, which saves gas while the vehicle is at a complete stop. Standard features on the new 5 series along with the older models starting at 2011 include power trunk lid, satellite radio, navigation, and Harman Kardon sound system. The 5 series comes with a variety of engines such as the 528i, 535i, 535d, and 550i. Some may have "xdrive" applied with their names, indicating it is all-wheel drive. The BMW is a four-door five passenger sedan. It is compatible with the Jaguar XF, Mercedes Benz E-class, Audi A6, Lexus GS 350, Cadillac CTS, and the Maserati Ghibli. Surprisingly, the 550i series remains the better choice over all of those vehicles. For it to be such a large sedan it goes from zero to 60 in 4.5 seconds. If you are looking for a sporty but luxury four-door sedan, the BMW 5 series is definitely a great way to go. It comes in tons of color options inside and out, along with technology package as well. For example, if you are looking for an vehicle for luxury and sport but not too big on the luxury side, the 5 series is perfect. The 5 series can switch from comfort also known as luxury to sport by the push of one button. You will not go wrong if you choose this vehicle. Pros of the 550i includes, Superb engines with impressive fuel economy in most forms; high-quality interior thats packed with high-tech features; comfortable and composed ride. Cons includes, Ho-hum handling; relatively small trunk; intrusive auto stop-start system. Some safety features range from stability and traction control, anti-lock disc brakes, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. The braking system also periodically wipes the brake rotors dry in wet conditions and automatically snugs the brake pads to the rotors in preparation when you abruptly lift off the throttle. Another standard feature is the BMW Assist and Remote Services emergency communications systems, which include automatic crash notification, an SOS button, remote door unlock and stolen vehicle recovery. Parking sensors and a rear-view camera are standard on the 550i and optional on other models. An upgraded side- and top-view parking camera system is optional. The Driver Assistance Plus package includes a blind-spot warning system, a lane-departure warning system and a forward-collision warning system with automatic braking. There is also the Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection system that uses an infrared sensor to detect people and objects outside of headlight range.

  • Allens critique - 2000 BMW 5-Series

This car is a gas to drive. Responsive and solid. Feels and handles like a sports car. Now the bad news: be prepared to be raped by your local BMW service dept. They assume all owners are rich and do not care about price. My dealer was charging my wife $125 for an oil change!(Try $8 a qt. for Mobil 1 that can be had at parts stores for under $6) Routine repairs are always $800 to $1,000. I have all the service records and will be happy to share the news.I will buy another when pigs learn to fly. My 01 Corvette is faster, way cooler and I get the oil changed for $40.

  • BEST DRIVE EVER - 2004 BMW 5-Series
    By -

This is a great car to drive. Fast and fun. Easy to handle. The i control isnt too hard to learn, but you should really have a teenager there to help. I do find that sometimes settings are changed and I have no clue how I changed them or how to change them back. It will require you to look in the owners manual to fix it. BMW has contacted me several times as well as the auto dealership that sold it to me to inquire how I like the car. I feel like I am being treated very well by BMW. I love this car.

  • I FLY 535i - 2008 BMW 5-Series
    By -

Our 2008 535i is a rocket ship! The new twin turbo I-6 cranks out 300 hp and 300 lb ft of torque. Matched to a 6 speed sport automatic with paddle shifters, this car hauls! The design is appealingly unique and avoids the cookie cutter quad headlights and triangular taillamps of the Mercedes lineup. The interior is an ode to minimalism but with practical secondary HVAC and stereo controls to compliment the iDrive package. This car provides tremendous performance, the utility of a 5 seater, aggressive style, top notch build quality and solid value. We Came, We Saw, We Bought.

  • Great Start - 2004 BMW 5-Series
    By -

Fantastic automobile. Ordered with every option except sport package. Titanium Grey with grey leather. Some initial build quality issues but a solid start to the new 5. I-pod ease of use issue very overblown have found it easy and intuitive. Best combination of ride, handling, speed, exterior design, interior design, and features on the market.

  • First 5 Series - 2004 BMW 5-Series
    By -

We ordered our 5 series from the factory in Munich and had it deliverd to the US in June. This is our first sport luxury sedan and are very pleased with the ride, handling, and appearance. The comfort of the interior is outstanding and allows for 6-8 hour drives with no discomfort. Sound system is great. We use the owners manual to figure out the iDrive and have most of our settings finally completed. Will return to this web site in a year to update our experience.

  • Great car, but only for small people - 1999 BMW 5-Series
    By -

Beautifully engineered and manufactured, but really fits people only 56" or less, with narrow shoulders. Car is very fragile due to lack of road clearance in front. Beware of curbs and parking lot bumps.

  • Horrible problems - 2004 BMW 5-Series
    By -

Electrical problems and transmission problems from day one. 6 speed manual is very clunky, bad transmission. Vehicle caught fire! Car is constantly in shop, with no loaner provided. Qualifies for a lemon and I am working with a lawyer. If this particular vehicle didnt have so many problems, Id really love the car. Excellent handling... much better than MB E300. Nice engine. If the transmission shifted properly, it would be an amazing match to the engine. Quiet driving, stable at high speeds. Great heated seats with lots of adjustment. Huge trunk. Standard stereo leaves lots to be desired.
