Model Overview:

It's no exaggeration to say that the BMW 5 Series sets the standard for premium sport sedans. Introduced for the 1972 model year, the midsize 5 Series has long offered a near-perfect blend of performance, luxury and interior room. It's also highly regarded for its refined styling and innovative technology features.

Most BMW 5 Series models you'll come across will be rear-wheel-drive sedans, though you'll stumble upon the occasional 5 Series wagon on the used car market. In addition, all-wheel drive has been optional for some time, and many used sedans in colder climes will be so equipped. Traditionally, the 5 Series has featured an inline six-cylinder gasoline engine, but BMW has also offered V8 engines, turbocharged four-cylinders and even diesel-powered options. When people ask us to recommend luxury cars, the BMW 5 Series is invariably high on the list, new or used.

  • Best Performance Sedan - 2003 BMW 5-Series

Love this car. I had numerous VWs (GTI, 2 Passats, New Beetle), and a BMW 325i Touring, but always lusted after the "5". When I realized the 2004 was going to get the Chris Bangle treatment, I went out and bought one of the last 2003 available.

  • A dangerous LEMON - 2004 BMW 5-Series
    By -

I obtained this, my third BMW, with enthusiasm. Unfortunately, the car was a lemon from an electrical standpoint with multiple problems from the start. The worst were that the heated seat burned through the seat leather and burned through my clothes and into my wallet which was all that saved me. Now the seat is under recall. Next the assisted steering system failed on the freeway. I have returned the car most unsatisfied!!

  • Yeah, baby!! - 2000 BMW 5-Series

My wife made me buy it. Honest! I was set on a 2002 Lexus IS300. Boy, was she ever right! There is just no comparison between the two. This is by far a classier, more powerful (and expensive) animal of a car! And, I bought it with17K miles for $10K below book. Yeah, baby!! I bought an Extended Warranty for $2400 and have gotten $2000 worth of use from it. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THESE CARS!! As has been said, repairs are expensive -every time. Though, I have had no major issues with this car. I put Bridgestone Potenza SO-3 Pole Position tires - $1Kfor 4 - 20K miles a set - on this car. It LOVES the rain, almost better than the dry road. I LOVE THIS CAR!

  • Great Sports Sedan - 1999 BMW 5-Series
    By -

I recently purchased the 528i Sports & Premium Package. It is the 3rd BMW I have owned and I continue to be impressed by the overall engineering, fit & finish, performance, and fun to drive features of the 528i. I have been able to test the Sports packages suberb handling while driving down the Northern California Coast to Pebble Beach and up to the Napa Valley. As the daily driver, the 528i provides great utility, comfort, and excitement during my twenty mile (mostly freeway) commute. With a growing family, the BMW 5-series is the perfect compromise between performance and practicality.

  • Love this car but - 1999 BMW 5-Series

My wife had a new baby and bought this car. We love the car,its fun to drive, and realiable, but find it difficult to put a baby in a car seat, and it does not have the extra hooks to tie down a car seat. The drink holders are the worst I have ever seen. We need to move on to a the mini van and forget about getting another BMW.

  • Stay In The Shop - 2001 BMW 5-Series
    By -

This cars style and lines are beautiful inside and out. It handles like a champ on the road, when its not in the shop. Seems like the cold weather always creates problems for it, ie. tensioners go bad noises get louder. While at the shop the problem can never be duplicated on the first visit. It takes at least two visits to the shop to get it repaired. They never have the broken part in stock. Also, the car is not as quiet as I would expect from a high end vehicle. My frequent visits to the service dept. and the noises continually reduce my opinion of my 525i. If you buy one make sure it is Certified, so your out of pocket expenses will be minimal.

  • Am I Alone - 2006 BMW 5-Series
    By -

I am currently driving 5 series 06 model & it is an absolute joy & delight to drive. It is indeed the Ultimate Driving Machine. Here is my dilemma: One month after I got the car, I got a Check Control Message & the IDrive indicated "High Battery Drain!" As per the dealer, I need to drive the car more often because the car has a lot of power & it not good to keep it parked for a long time. I was driving it twice a week & still got the message. I called the dealer again took it twice to the dealer in less than a week. Conclusion: There is a software problem that makes this message pop up & the problem is being worked on in their main office in New Jersey.

Love this car. I would say the 535i is a great buy based on gas savings durig these times. But power is the name of my game This car handles wonderfully. The sports package is a must. And while enjoying the ride listen to the Harmon Kardon how real can you get? Just a nice all-around confortable drive. This car turns heads, then youre gone and you cant help but smile.

A car built for a driver. Corners beautifully, comfortable on trips and in town.

  • More than a grocery getter - 1993 BMW 5-Series

I bought this car with 109K from a BMW dealership for commuting to work and hauling our Labradors. It has proven to be reliable, enjoyable to drive, relatively economical, and one of the best vehicles weve ever owned.
