  • Love Hate Relationship - 2004 Audi A8

Most of the reliability issues owners have experienced are electronic problems. Interestingly, I have had major mechanical issues - transmission, suspension, cooling system and more. All these problems started right around 51K miles, just out of warranty! So far I have spent over $6,000 in repairs. About $4,500 of that is parts, because you wont find aftermarket parts for this car. If you are reading this review you are probably considering purchasing a used 2004. My best advice would be to get the best extended warranty you can. Get a warranty that has "stated exclusions" only, so you know exactly what will not be covered. With all that said, I really do love driving the car!

  • Great car but... - 2004 Audi A8

I traded a 2001 BMW 740iL for the A8L. The car seems great but less than 3 weeks after I bought it, it was in the shop for a system failure and the entire dashboard display has to be replaced plus several other items. Check the service history. I was told by the tech that the 04s are "just temperamental". If you can, hold out for a 2006/07 Get a CPO and still under Audi warranty or you will be in big trouble. Gas mileage seem very poor.

  • Disappointed - 2004 Audi A8

First car was taken back by dealership after electronics failed and car had been in the shop for 30 days. Replacement vehicle still has electronic problems. I have been locked out (remote will not work) and the automatic rear lid closer works only on occassion. MMI has been upgraded but is tempermental and is difficult to work while driving. More distracting than a cell phone!. Dealer service is terrible, given the cost of this "luxury " vehicle. Ive had better service at a Chevy dealership.

  • It has a Mind of its Own - 2004 Audi A8

My 2004 Audi A8 is equipped with all the electronics, short of making you coffee in the morning. The only problem seems to be that it will work when it feels like it. I have had the vehicle back for the upgrading of the navigation system. The following are a short list of poroblems that I have experienced with this car: the auto trunk open/close is not working the car will lock itself the seats do not adjust to the entry key being used the interior lights will not work in the auto position (they just stay on) the doors will not open with the remote key all the time the seats seem to adjust by themselves.

  • Great Car Bad Company - 2004 Audi A8
    By -

A great car which deserves a company to stand behind it. The car spent a total of two months in for service, with the last one being 45 dyas in a row. The car has computer and transmission problems which Audi will not stand behind. It was a bad experience. the transmission slips and progressively gets worse.

  • Terrible surprise - 2004 Audi A8

Initially loved the car, until I went for a car wash and the trunk lid opened by itself...everything got wet in the trunk. How this kind of thing can happen in a luxury car??? Then I went to the dealer and supposedly they changed the motor of the trunk lid. I also changed the tires to all season for the winter (got unfortunatedly the 19 wheels with summer tires). The dealer messed up the tires and wheels (with quite a few scraches). Also they used the car for ~ 60 miles (probably the technician took for a ride). This is unacceptable from a luxury car dealership.

  • Audi just misses... - 2004 Audi A8

This is a great care to look at and it can be fun to drive. Unfortunately, Audi never got the transmission down. If you dont mind an unpleasant surge as you commence to accelerate from a stop, you will be happy. It drives me nuts. Also, dont buy the 19" wheel version as the ride quality tradeoff is drastic. Audi advertises as the "Intelligent car" but the nav system is difficult to operate and that pop up screen to control the radio sucks.

  • Problems already? - 2004 Audi A8
    By -

Lets see, I have only 400 miles on my A8L and it has spent 4 days in the shop because the MMI system locks up or just will not start. I really hope this is not an indicator of things to come. I had to get rid of a 745i for similar iDrive errors and recalls. Audi needs to nip this in the bud quickly before they end up buying back all of their first year models.

  • Fun to drive, but rotten electronics - 2004 Audi A8
    By -

The car drives well(but not as well as the 740iL it replaced) but the electronics are a horror. To tune the radio the driver needs to take his eyes off the road. About half the time the right outside mirror doesnt return to normal position after reversing. The MMI screen comes up blank if its been closed before, and needs to be opened, closed and opened again to work. After 2 months, something drained the battery and the car had to be towed to the dealer.

  • Should have bought a Mercedez - 2004 Audi A8
    By -

I bought a brand new car and within 3000 miles it broke down. The dealership has had our car longer than we have. We have no idea when we will get it back. A car that cost 85 thousand dollars shouldnt break down in less than a month. Im very disappointed with my first Audi and I will never buy another one. I should have bought a Mercedez.
