The 2.8 gains a revised deck lid and expanded central locking features. All models have new cloth upholstery, and the console and armrests are trimmed with the same fabric as the seats. Three new colors debut for 1997.

Pros:
  • Artful bodywork, outstanding handling, luxurious interior, optional Quattro all-wheel drive system, bargain price
Cons:
  • Rear leg room, fussy stereo controls, suspension float

  • My A4 - 1997 Audi A4

I have been more than impressed with my A4s outstanding interior, smooth good looks, exceptional build quality and ride. It has generous trunk space and front seats are very comfortable, altho rear passengers lack legroom. Its also quite affordable! The 1.8 turbo with 5 speed stick delivers smooth power (no noticeable lag) and enough horses to run with V6s. Ive been disappointed with reliability, needing to replace headlight bulbs repeatedly, and the rack & pinion steering system. While the ride is nice, Id prefer it stiffer for enthusiastic driving, but replacing the tires with some Kumhos vastly improved it.

  • Great driving year after year - 1997 Audi A4

This car has outstanding handling, acceleration, and road worthiness. It is a joy to drive under any conditions - in town or open road. The one drawback to the design is the limited leg room in the back seat which was improved somewhat in the newer model. Like any high performance car, it is not cheap to repair but the driving pleasure it offers offsets that negative.

  • Buy it if you know how to fix it.... - 1997 Audi A4

Audi is a very fun car to have. I love my Audi but be prepared to pay big$$$ once you hit over 50K. I am spending about $2000 /year on repairs and I will be selling it as soon as it gets fixed again... hope it helps.

This car is the greatest car I have ever owned. It is a very beautiful car! It has all the fine german details and enginering that will make this car last forever. It has been very reliable for me, and gets great gas milege. The quattro is AWESOME! I get compliments everywhere i go in my A4. :D

  • Control Arms - 1997 Audi A4

The vehicle was okay until 90,000 miles when it started to have front end problems. The control arms of which there are 8 cost around $3200 to fix. Also, the suspension is costly to get fixed.

  • 97 A4 2.8L Quattro-Automatic - 1997 Audi A4

Great car, very solid, even after 75K mi, going over RR crossings/potholes, barely hear anything. Fun car to drive, especially on wet with the Quattro. Beautiful exterior-IMHO, one of the best looking models Audi ever came out with. Repairs Req: Below average, minimum repairs needed as long as you provide enough TLC & good preventive maintenance. TIP: For parts use VW Passat, most parts exchangeable & cheaper. "Bad" Points: Extremely expensive maintenance & repairs, hard to find parts & shops to work on it other than Audi dealers. If you take good care of it though it will return the favor. Would definetly recommend as a good buy.

  • Ouch! - 1997 Audi A4

Talk about everything going wrong... Too numerous to tell - Lets just say my wallet is considerably lighter now! I bought this car because it was supposed to be reliable - many years ago at least. It turned out completely unreliable.

  • Audi A4 1.8T 1997 - 1997 Audi A4

It was love at first sight and I have never lost my desire to get in and just drive. The A4 has proven to be comfortable in all aspects of seating and visual line of sight as a driver. The car is aggressive in corners and commands the roads in all possible conditions. Even with this small turbo engine, acceleration is quick and prompt. No wondering when the power will become available as you step down on the peddle. As far as mechanical issues, none. After seven years I just did the brakes for the first time. Finally, the car is a 1997, and the sytling still turns heads and warm smiles of respect.

  • Great Audi If taken care of. - 1997 Audi A4

This car was my first Audi. I am very pleased that the car was taken care of by the first owner, which made it a whole lot better looking. I love the quattro. The only problem is that for a v6 there is not a whole lot of power, but then again your powering all 4 wheels. The traction and handling are GREAT. VERY PLEASED. But the Germans forgot that some Americans live in the heat and not in the snow so It has a tough time cooling itself down. The only thing that I did not like were the strips of plastic/metal on each door. They rot away easily and are a $100 to replace. But a great car.

  • Lease a new Audi not a new one - 1997 Audi A4

I was very excited to get this car at first. For the first year and a half I loved it then things went horribly wrong. Even though the car was "Audi Assured" the oil pump went out because it was not maintained properly before I got it. Thus causing the oil pump, turbo (twice), cam, and head to fail totalling $7K in repairs. Plus the dealer I took it to, Jordan Motors in Des Moines Iowa took over a month to fix it. Then I got in to a small collision and it was over $6K just to fix it. Dont buy this car or any car from them unless you can get it fixed for free. Even then dont buy anything from them.
