Model Overview:

The Audi A4 holds the distinction of having single-handedly revived the Audi brand. Launched in the mid-'90s, the compact A4 quickly became a favorite among luxury car buyers thanks to its beautifully finished cabin, sharp handling and available Quattro all-wheel drive. Although the A4 has offered these core characteristics from day one, it has become increasingly polished and high-tech with each successive generation. No matter which year you're looking at, the A4 promises both engaging performance and suave style inside and out.

The sedan body style has been a constant for the Audi A4, but depending on the vintage, you may also find wagon and convertible variants. Turbocharged four-cylinder power is typically found under the hood, yielding both reasonably spirited acceleration and satisfactory fuel economy. In road tests, we've consistently praised the A4's refined character, with more recent plaudits going to its spacious backseat, which has adequate room for full-size adults.

  • Good buy - 1997 Audi A4

Bought my A4 two years ago, and bought an extended warrenty. I had the turbo replaced under warrenty- I was happy to have it. The AWD is great for Michigan winters, and the rust protection seems to be very good. I plan on keeping this car for a while.

I bought a Audi A4 1.8T about a month ago. It runs good and is getting better and better as I get used to it. This is definetely well-built car but not electronically reliable.

  • Engine Ignition Coils Fail - 2003 Audi A4
    By -

My wifes 2nd A4. At 10,000 miles, two ignition coils failed-car undrivable. Dealer had car for one month. Had car back one week-third coil failed. Begged them to replace the fourth(final)coil. Audi wont let them (not enough parts). My wife is afraid to take the car anywhere beyond our neighborhood for fear of being stranded a third time Audi Client Services totally unresponsive. The dealership had over 20 A4s and A6s in the lot waiting for parts. Dealer says their hands are tied. Audi should be recalling these ignition coil problems, not waiting for them to fail.

  • Great Value - 1997 Audi A4

This car has been great to own. I have experienced none of the mechanical failures reported by other edmunds.com owners. It drives great and looks beautiful. After a car wash, people think its brand new. It was a great buy considering the cost of a 3-series of the same year.

  • Dont Buy This Car! - 2001 Audi A4
    By -

I bought a 2001 A4 in Sept. of 2001 and it has given me nothing but problems. In a little over a year I have had a laundry list of problems ranging from engine problems (cylinder coil, faulty oil pump, problems with the turbo, etc.) to safety problems (faulty air bag) to just plain annoying problems like a leak in my rear windshield, leak in the washer fluid system, bad CD player, buttons on the console that stopped working, and an ashtray that doesnt open! It seems ive been driving a rental more than my own car. If I wanted to drive a Ford Escort I would have bought one! DONT BUY AN AUDI!!

  • Highs and Lows - 1999 Audi A4

My wife is the primary driver of this car and loves the handling. She loves the suspension and the ability to navigate anywhere in the snow. The downer is that as soon as the warranty expired, so did the car. $1000 in repairs in the last 9 months.

It is a great car but I would like a little more power.

  • Super automobile - 2001 Audi A4

A great car to drive both in the winter and summer. No problems in the snow and ice. I love to have people test me on the freeway, the turbo will blow them away. this car looks great both inside and out. I love the way the seats feel and the comfort they provide. I dont have anybody to sit in the back so there is plent of room for the kid. Had minor problems with a faulty read from a loose sensor.

  • Fun car! Unreliable. - 1999 Audi A4
    By -

At 23,000 miles, 20 days after the warranty expired, the water pump seized up and destroyed the engine. Audi rebuilt the engine and covered the cost. Whew! Audi service is wonderful (at least at Barrier Motors in Bellevue, WA) Since then the car is more reliable but continues to have small problems beyond the usual Audi issues. That said, I love the look and feel of the car and will buy another Audi -- probably the all road or the A6 Avant. The Audi visual appeal exceeds that of BMW.
