Model Overview:

The Audi A4 holds the distinction of having single-handedly revived the Audi brand. Launched in the mid-'90s, the compact A4 quickly became a favorite among luxury car buyers thanks to its beautifully finished cabin, sharp handling and available Quattro all-wheel drive. Although the A4 has offered these core characteristics from day one, it has become increasingly polished and high-tech with each successive generation. No matter which year you're looking at, the A4 promises both engaging performance and suave style inside and out.

The sedan body style has been a constant for the Audi A4, but depending on the vintage, you may also find wagon and convertible variants. Turbocharged four-cylinder power is typically found under the hood, yielding both reasonably spirited acceleration and satisfactory fuel economy. In road tests, we've consistently praised the A4's refined character, with more recent plaudits going to its spacious backseat, which has adequate room for full-size adults.

I recently purchased my 99 1/2 2.8 Quattro 5 spd. and love it (1,000 miles in just over a week). I drove a 1.8T and my 6 cylinder is much smoother and much quieter. I also recommend the 5 spd. if you enjoy really driving your car. The tiptronic seems sloppy on upshifts and just doesnt have hands on feel of the manual. The quattro glues the car to the road no matter the conditions, a must here in Utah. I traded in a 98 Mercedes C280 Sport and my Audi not only outperforms the MB its interior is also more luxurious in my opinion.

  • Loved BMWs but Audi WON it now - 2002 Audi A4

The car has been all and more than I expected. Looked at BMW 330xi, Jag X and Volvo V 60. Narowed to Audi and BMW ended with Audi. Chose over the BMW because of price and got sick of the show off name and past experience of owning BMWs (cost and reliability durring and after waranty). Free maintenace (inludes all Brakes, Wipers etc.) that BMW did not have.

Quality made. Looks great. But the engine is a failure. Below 2200rmp nothing moves. Then, when the Turbo kicks in engine gets VERY noisy. This car has deserved a much better engine. Advice to Audi: take the 1.8T out and replace it with VWs VR6 from the GTI

I love this car. Very reliable, very fun to drive, it is my daily driver as well as my weekend autocross car. Takes everything I dish out and only asks regular maintenance in return.

The car has been very reliable, and I have had no major problems. It handles great it is fun to drive on twisty roads, and is good in snow as well. Power is very good considering actual displacement of engine, but it isnt as torquey as say a Volkswagen VR6 or a BMW inline 6. Mileage is good -- I get 28 mpg on the highway going 80 mph. Very nice looking inside and out.

  • Beautiful, with a few hiccups - 2002 Audi A4

Bought this car for my wife, who LOVES it. I love the styling, superb interior quality, versatility of the wagon. Problems include the well-known coilpack failure which completely disabled the car requiring flatbed towing to the dealership after 7,000 miles. Not what I would expect in a car of this caliber. Now we are hesitant to take this practically brand new car on extended road trips because we are worried about breaking down. Because of short supply, the dealership will not replace all of the coilpacks under warranty, only if they fail (and leave you stranded!) Rims have been a headache (see Suggested Improvements, below)

I bought this car on accident, I was on my way to buy a 325ci, but I saw the 2002 A4 and that’s all she wrote. For those of you who live in Southern Cal, try Topanga Cyn. The grip is remarkable! If you think youre too hot into a corner, press the gas! Amazing! That’s a move I could NEVER do in my GTI! It brings a tear to the eye.

  • What a Dream Car - 2003 Audi A4

My new Audi A4 Cabrio is beyond my dreams. I had an A4 sedan on order, but fell in love with this cabrio on the lot, and am so impressed with the vehicle. The engine is powerful, yet quiet. The new CVT transmission is so smooth on acceleration. The top mechanics are typically high quality german design, and makes the vehicle feel like a hard top coupe with the top up. Trunk space is limited with the top down, but not too bad.

  • Like Mike - 2000 Audi A4

I agree with Mike S. While I love the performance of the car, Ive had to take the car into the shop for miscellaneous problems every 6-8 weeks for the last 18 months. Its never anything terribly serious but its always something. Dash electronics, water pump, thermostat, speaker, more dash electronics, another thermostat, and EVERYTHING RATTLES. Not quite enough trouble to qualify for a lemon but too much for a two year old car with low miles. Ive complained to the dealership and they pay lip service to helping me - but nothing ever changes. I really do love the car, but who has time to have their car in the shop that often? Im disappointed.
