Model Overview:

The Audi A4 holds the distinction of having single-handedly revived the Audi brand. Launched in the mid-'90s, the compact A4 quickly became a favorite among luxury car buyers thanks to its beautifully finished cabin, sharp handling and available Quattro all-wheel drive. Although the A4 has offered these core characteristics from day one, it has become increasingly polished and high-tech with each successive generation. No matter which year you're looking at, the A4 promises both engaging performance and suave style inside and out.

The sedan body style has been a constant for the Audi A4, but depending on the vintage, you may also find wagon and convertible variants. Turbocharged four-cylinder power is typically found under the hood, yielding both reasonably spirited acceleration and satisfactory fuel economy. In road tests, we've consistently praised the A4's refined character, with more recent plaudits going to its spacious backseat, which has adequate room for full-size adults.

  • Buyer Beware - 2001 Audi A4

Ive only owned the car for a few months and have had it die on me twice. All 2001 Audis have faulty engine coils, mine have broken twice already and supposedely have now all been replaced with new non-faulty coils. In the process a tow truck ripped off my front spoiler and I fought with them for over two moths for replacement compensation. My dealership was unsympathetic and useless. I bought the car based on reliability and customer service, I have found both to be completely lacking and unsatisfactory. Never buy an Audi without the original warranty remaining. Instead, go buy a Lexus or Acura, thats what Ill be doing next.

Okay, for the longest time I wanted a BMW 330i car but all that changed when I test drove the Audi A4. Well, to put it simply ... its the best German car that I drove in a while. IT FUN, FAST, SAFE and LOOKS GREAT.

  • Lease a new Audi not a new one - 1997 Audi A4

I was very excited to get this car at first. For the first year and a half I loved it then things went horribly wrong. Even though the car was "Audi Assured" the oil pump went out because it was not maintained properly before I got it. Thus causing the oil pump, turbo (twice), cam, and head to fail totalling $7K in repairs. Plus the dealer I took it to, Jordan Motors in Des Moines Iowa took over a month to fix it. Then I got in to a small collision and it was over $6K just to fix it. Dont buy this car or any car from them unless you can get it fixed for free. Even then dont buy anything from them.

  • Beware of Timing Belt Nightmare!!! - 1997 Audi A4
    By -

I was so excited to purchase my Audi. Now, I cant wait to sell it ASAP. I have had very expensive repairs, extensive headaches, and extraordinary POOR customer service. I specifically asked if timing belt should be changed at 60,000 miles. I was told "NO, manual states 90,000." I was driving 70mph and my timing belt completely blew at 61,000 miles and I almost lost my life when the car stopped suddenly. Audi refuses to assist in any way (or show concern), even though the part was found to be, essentially, defective. Very expensive repair. Buyer Beware! I have been contacted about a pending class action lawsuit for this.

  • Beware - 2002 Audi A4

After one year the car is back to the shop about once a month. Once it was in the shop for a minor fender bender and the shop still cant get it fixed after 4 trips and trust me it was a minor accident. I have been taking it to a dealer in Charleston, WV. The support and repair for the car sucks. The dealer even offered to trade the car and then offered me $14,000 less for the car than I payed for it after only one year. Dont contact Audi with complaints they dont have any power or desire to deal with their dealerships. On my way home from having a light bulb changed the whole taillight fell out and all Audi could say is they would document it.

  • 1998 A4 1.8 T - 1998 Audi A4

I am pleasantly surprised with the quality of this vehicle for the price. Although a but under powered with the 1.8, many chip upgrades are available which will boost the torque to that of the 6 cyl. model. I can use the money saved to invest in modifications which will end up in a car that can compete in many respects with the BMW 3-series.

  • Beware of A4 - 1998 Audi A4

I bought this car used with 35k in 09/01 and it has been a big disappointment. Two weeks after I drove it off the lot it needed a new front bearing. Since then Ive had to bring the car in to the dealer for numerous problems (The Check Engine light seems to appear every 6 months). Most of the problems were minor and were covered under the Audi Assured warranty but the real kicker is my engine died. The car was in the shop for three weeks. Audi did replace the engine and turbo at their cost, but during the three weeks the car was in the shop they refused to provide a loaner
