Model Overview:

The Audi A4 holds the distinction of having single-handedly revived the Audi brand. Launched in the mid-'90s, the compact A4 quickly became a favorite among luxury car buyers thanks to its beautifully finished cabin, sharp handling and available Quattro all-wheel drive. Although the A4 has offered these core characteristics from day one, it has become increasingly polished and high-tech with each successive generation. No matter which year you're looking at, the A4 promises both engaging performance and suave style inside and out.

The sedan body style has been a constant for the Audi A4, but depending on the vintage, you may also find wagon and convertible variants. Turbocharged four-cylinder power is typically found under the hood, yielding both reasonably spirited acceleration and satisfactory fuel economy. In road tests, we've consistently praised the A4's refined character, with more recent plaudits going to its spacious backseat, which has adequate room for full-size adults.

  • Awesome A4 - 2002 Audi A4

I have a 3.0 Tiptronic Quattro. Ebony inside and out. Leather too. This is my second A4, and I must say that the 2002 model is 100% improved from the previous generation. I thought the previous generation was great, but the 2002 model feels soooo solid and well built. It is better in every regard. The fuel economy ratings are right on target; I consistently get 25 MPG on the highway and a little over 18 in the city. Im not faulting the ratings, I just wish the fuel economy was a little better. I think the front seats are a little firm, but that is just my taste. Perhaps theyll soften up as time goes on.

  • Unbelievable handling - 2002 Audi A4

The handling in this car is unlike any other car Ive driven. The BMW 3-Series 4 wheel drive doesnt compare. The car rides a little bit rough at lower speeds and its pick-up is good but not great, but where this car really excels is on the open road. Extremely tight handling at higher speeds, this car is extremely fun to drive. One major drawback for me has been that the Check Engine light will not go off despite repeated trips to the dealership.

  • Beware of Beautiful Cars - 1998 Audi A4

I bought my A4 new and have maintained it meticulously from the day I bought it. I would not buy one again. It started falling apart after 4 years: alternator, battery, engine control module, tie rod ends (twice), upper and lower control arm links, drivers side airbag, sunroof control switch, rear shocks, engine mount. All of this cost about $5,000. Luckily, I bought an extended warranty that defrays some of the cost. If you plan to buy one of these cars and keep it after the warranty expires, be prepared to spend a lot on repairs. And those repairs will cost you at least twice as much as you would expect.

  • Falling Apart - 1999 Audi A4

Loved the car when I bought it but friends warned me to get rid of an Audi after 50k miles. How true! The door handle latch broke recently and then the water pump seized and left me stranded on the highway. Suggest that future prospects think hard about status vs. reliability. Me? Im buying another Subaru. They DONT fall apart.

  • Same Story - 2000 Audi A4

I bought this Audi for the Style, Fuel Economy, and how it handles with the Tiptronic transmission. I liked the idea of free scheduled maintenance for 50k. Then, like many others, I have lived at the dealership. Cruise control, blinking console lights, rough idle, and 5 new headlights. Too many problems for a former Honda Accord owner. Back to Honda!!!!

  • Unreliable - 2001 Audi A4

Great handling, but it breaks down and the dealers cant fix it or get parts. Or, they fix it incorrectly and it has to be towed back.

  • Quiet, smooth, confident - 2002 Audi A4
    By -

After 20 years of driving strictly American cars, finally decided to test drive an Audi, and fell in love immediately. BMWs are excellent, but I felt like I was spending $5000 for the brand name. The A4 impresses with its power, solidity, quiet, and smoothness. Even more impressive: the interior, quite simply the nicest car interior Ive ever seen. Little technology flourishes abound but dont get in the way (example: twist the mirror knob to the right and put the car in reverse, and the right mirror tilts down to show you the curb youre parallel parking toward). Overall, superb!

  • Great A4 - 2002 Audi A4

Excellent all weather vehicle as snow and rain are a mere joke for this car. I have had a few minor problems however if you want bullet proof reliability buy Japanese. Low end power is suspect however once on the move the 1.8T is a great engine.

  • We love our Audi. - 2000 Audi A4

Its been a pretty reliable car only needing a couple minor repairs just outside warranty. Despite its seemingly low HP, its a blast to drive. The sport package is worth the money, it handles incredibly well-- quattro is the only way to go. We will buy another Audi.

  • read the good AND bad!!!! BE OBJECTIVE! - 2002 Audi A4
    By -

so ive owned my A4 for about a year and a half, and now im on edmunds shopping for a decent used one. i consider myself a demanding driver and as a performance vehicle, its a great ride. but in the shop 14 times over the past year is insane! clutch, suspension issues, ignition coils... the worst was being a center console (electronics) flake out that left me using a loner for a week. CONSIDERING aftermarket chip? risk screwing that powertrain warranty and youll have the sweetest looking lawn ornament in town. i wanted this thing to work cause its sweet looking package. but ive learned much more about cars than i cared to through this headache.
