Model Overview:

The Audi A4 holds the distinction of having single-handedly revived the Audi brand. Launched in the mid-'90s, the compact A4 quickly became a favorite among luxury car buyers thanks to its beautifully finished cabin, sharp handling and available Quattro all-wheel drive. Although the A4 has offered these core characteristics from day one, it has become increasingly polished and high-tech with each successive generation. No matter which year you're looking at, the A4 promises both engaging performance and suave style inside and out.

The sedan body style has been a constant for the Audi A4, but depending on the vintage, you may also find wagon and convertible variants. Turbocharged four-cylinder power is typically found under the hood, yielding both reasonably spirited acceleration and satisfactory fuel economy. In road tests, we've consistently praised the A4's refined character, with more recent plaudits going to its spacious backseat, which has adequate room for full-size adults.

  • Outstanding tech wrapped around a really good car - 2017 Audi A4
    By -

I test drove a lot of cars (3-series, C300, GLC, XC60, Mazda6, Mini Clubman) before choosing the 2017 A4 and so far, I really enjoy the car. Right now, I think it offers the best mix of tech, performance and luxury in the class, at least until the next 3-series or whatever leapfrogs it. Pros: - The tech goodies are really impressive. Virtual Cockpit is fantastic and having the nav right in front of you in a huge display is actually very useful. Its easy to learn the basic functions of the infotainment system, but it is worth the time to dig deeper and really understand all the different ways you can customize the experience. It makes the car a lot more enjoyable. Even with all the tech, the usability is much better than Mercedes and Lexus. Honestly, you really need to get the technology package to get the best out of this car. - Beyond the gadgets, this is a very good drivers car. Acceleration and braking are very strong, especially with quattro. The ride is firm but controlled. The steering is lighter than I would prefer though. - The interior is not as rich as the C-Class and the GLC, but the materials are high quality, visibility is excellent and the look is very clean and modern. I am 62" with really broad shoulders and size 14 feet, and I have enough head and legroom in the front. I did not fit well at all in the C300, IS and Jaguar XE. The 3 series also has a pretty roomy cabin. - It doesnt use run-flats and has an actual spare tire. I never cared until my wife and I both had flats last year. I had a spare tire. She didnt. I was able to get moving again. She had to get towed. Enough said. Cons: - Setting up the AudiConnect trial was a pain that required multiple phone calls and websites. I was told there were issues with both the new A4 and Q7. I work in tech, so I was able to muddle through this and get everything set up, but Audi really needs to improve the process. - Exterior styling is handsome, but too much like the last generation A4 and the current A3. Its really difficult to tell them apart at first glance. It would have been nice if the new A4 was a little more distinctive - Interior storage could be better. I love the adjustable center armrest, which seems to be a VW/Audi signature, but it doesnt fully cover the compartment, so you cant store anything showy in there. The glovebox is also very small, but at least there is a deep compartment next to the steering wheel that can hold a decent amount of items. - I wish you didnt have to pony up for the Prestige package to get the additional driver assist package. LA traffic would be a little less annoying with the dynamic cruise control, but cost aside, Prestige models are almost impossible to find on dealer lots right now, and good luck getting a color other than black or white. - With all the new tech, I hope long-term reliability isnt an issue.

  • Great car, some dealership issues - 2001 Audi A4
    By -

We had a great experience buying this car. However, our experience with the a different dealer for maintenance (Royal Motors in SF) has been ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. Audi dealer mechanics are bonused based on customer feedback. We didnt know this when we filled out the Audi feedback letter after our 1st service at Royal Motors. One of the mechanics left a voice mail on our home phone complaining about how our low feedback score was going to hurt his compensation. To top it off, every time we go back, we get this passive-aggressive treatment from the employees, with petty comments like "I see you gave ___ a low score" years after that feedback was submitted.

  • Mostly a good used vehicle! - 2000 Audi A4

Exterior and interior are both well executed. Nice lines, quality materials, and great build quailty. My Audi came with the optional sport package (16 inch 10 spoke rims, leather seats, lowered suspension) and it looks much better than the stock car with only 15 inch rims. Quattro is excellent, especially in winter driving conditions. I am slightly worried about future mechanical problems based on other users reviews but I have an extended warranty (which I recommend for any used German car) but I havent had any problems up to 06/2004. Recommended-with an extended warranty!

  • Bose stereo - not impressed - 2002 Audi A4

The Bose stereo is a weakness. Sound is only average. FM and AM reception poor. Dealer cannot improve it. Sound system in this car should be fantastic. Cant upgrade a Bose must replace all.

Ive had my 2001 A4 for a year and a half now, and am still as happy with it as the day I drove out of the dealers lot. This car is a keeper.

  • Well worth the money - and repairs. - 1998 Audi A4
    By -

I have had my share of problems with the car. Broken turbo, tie rod ends, control arms, wheel bearings, and the ignition switch. But with all the broken things, I just replace them with aftermarker parts, which make my car so much more enjoyable to drive. I have upgraded the turbo from a k03 to a k04, put in heavy duty control arms and tie rod ends, put a full race coilover kit (KW), made a custom 3" Turbo-back exhaust with hi flow cat, and did many other little things, that would cost more to replace with OEM parts than what I did, yet I yeild much happier results. This is a drivers car. Quattro is AMAZING in snow/incliment weather.

  • Audi Convertible - 2004 Audi A4

Almost bought Saab convertible...glad I didnt. Love the CVT transmission; front wheel drive was terrific in recent 9" snowstorm. Car is fun to drive, very responsive. A dream!

  • Fast and Fun, off the dial - 2003 Audi A4
    By -

After comparing BMW 330, Saab 9-3 Volvo S90 I purchased the A4 3.0. with full package except nav and sport. Found the sport option made the car too road stiff and the nav was more confusing than it was worth. Driven full out with governor off, speedo maxed out and then some, It moves well. If you want to burn rubber at start then use the triptronic shifter, othwerwise the CVT is smooth. Overall have had several high end autos, this is one of the best.
