This Year's Model Updates:

A number of interior, exterior and mechanical updates were made for 2004. The V6 engine added slightly more power and is now rated at 265 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. Outside, you'll find a restyled front fascia, new chrome trim, dual exhaust tips, a new wheel design for Touring models, updated headlights and taillights and a rear wing spoiler. The interior now features trendy brushed metal-look trim for the center stack, leather armrests, auto-on/off headlights, new ambient foot lighting and enhanced functionality of the second-row seat for third-row access. Touring models get a new version of the Bose premium audio system and power lumbar support for the driver seat. Finally, safety has been improved on all MDXs with the addition of side curtain airbags and a tire-pressure monitoring system.

Pros:
  • Room for seven passengers or serious amounts of cargo, gutsy V6 engine, well-balanced suspension, top-rated crash test scores, low price.
Cons:
  • Limited off-road capability, below-average tow rating, ho-hum interior design and materials.

  • Satisfied on Cape Cod - 2004 Acura MDX

Very pleased with purchase of Acura MDX. Decided to trade-in a 4 door BMW due to lifestyle (18 month old)and am very happy I did so. She is so much happier now that she can see everything when we drive. Of course, love the spaciousness, esp. of the back when shopping. Truly enjoy the ride, the interior design and all the features. Test drove many SUVs before we bought and have no second thoughts on purchase.Almost bought a Honda Pilot, but felt for a few more dollars, the MDX gave you alot more. Other SUVs (X5, Toureg, Land Rover) much more overpriced for what you get.

Ive spent a lot of seat time in many SUVs. MDX has the best compromises between utility and sport. Too little utility X5, FX35/45, RX330. Reliability issues ML320/500. Unproven reliability XC90, Toureg (sp?), SRX. You got to be kinding/what were they thinking? Cayenne, G500.

nice looking inside and out. terrible on fuel economy is worse than 8 cyl. jeep...engine looks really cool....a little sluggish from0- 50 ,,,,,off road isnt too good, could have more clearance hits bottom sometimes...very comfortable ride and plenty of room,,and plenty of cup holders. Dont misplace your radio code,,if you lose it and battery dies ,,youll hve no music

  • Mildly disappointed, horrible mileage - 2004 Acura MDX

I had expected a positive experience in the switch from my Volvo V70 to the MDX. The MDX still had its share of initial defects, from a poorly fitting & hard to close rear hatch to missing hardware on the front center consol box. The mileage is atrocious. Im getting 11.9 all-around mileage against an advertised 18-22. It must be a larger issue, because someone stopped my wife in a parking lot the other day to ask how bad her mileage was (he had the same problem). In retrospect, Id take the Volvo Cross-Country over the MDX any day, if only my 3 kids under 6 and their friends fit in one!

Overall handling/comfort is great. Rear (3rd row) seat is more for kids or cargo and not made for adults. Highway accelaration noise is a bit excessive and annoying, just boost up the dynamite sound system to drown it out.

  • It is OK - 2004 Acura MDX

Design flaw in retractable front seat belts causes the belts to snap back too quickly and hit the door jamb. The result is small nicks on the door casing that will only get worse as the car ages. Tape over the area helps diminish this problem. Fuel economy is not good on local travel but ok on highway. Third seat is useless.

  • Quality SUV - 2004 Acura MDX

Solid performance and handling.Superb fit and finish with good attention to detail. Fake Interior woodgrain on the doors detracts from an attracitve package. Much more room than the Lexus 330, Caddy SRX and BMW. Better value than anything in the class.

  • Love it, but a little disappointed - 2004 Acura MDX

My 2004 is great! The ride, luxury, and roominess are better than any other I tried. However, unexpectedly it is the noisiest quiet vehicle. It is 7 months and it has the following noises: front caliper pop, rear breaks make a clunk noise when I change direction, they also make a loud rubbing noise during the first 10 min. of operation every day (all of this according to the dealer is normal). The NAV system controls on the steering wheel don’t work 20% of the time. All this is not to say that I don’t like my MDX. I do like it very much. It’s just not perfect, which for the money I would have expected it to come a little closer.
