This Year's Model Updates:

For 2006, Volkswagen had planned on introducing a new 3.6-liter V6 engine and bringing back the diesel-fueled V10. However, the V6 has been shelved until next year's model, and the V10 will debut very late in 2006. Therefore, the only significant change to the Volkswagen Touareg is the addition of a new rearview camera feature and auxiliary multimedia connector to the optional navigation package.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, true off-road capability, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Lousy fuel economy, smaller backseat than competitors, no in-dash CD changer.

I have driven many SUVs and this one is by far the best. I just love it. It is very fun to drive! Unfortunately my dealers "after sale" support has been poor!

I always change cars every two years. The difference is if I find a better model, I change, if not, just buy the same. I drove a BMW X5 V8, and it had problems. I changed to a Mercedes ML500, and had no problems, but it was not good offroad. Then I changed for a 2004 VW Touareg, it was more comfortable and user friendly. After 30,000 impecable miles, I traded it in for a 2005 Touareg in July 2005. With Pirellis on 18 inch wheels, it handles as if it was on smooth rails. Precise, totally satisfactory to drive, in both the city and highway. Then go off road, the BMW and the Mercedes had trouble in the Death Valley canyons, the Touareg makes everything steady and easy.

Fun to drive and excellent winter driving vehicle. Problem: Tire cupping and road noise after 5-6000 miles. Have had tires replaced on two occasions, two alignments and at 32,000 miles VW now says they wont fully warranty the tire issue. Issues not fully resolved yet!!

At first I was hesitant to buy this car because of poor ratings for the 04 model. Im glad I did. It gets better gas mileage (18 mpg) than the 02 Explorer, had every possible option, sounds outstanding when hitting the gas, and the stereo with navigation is close to what I have in my house. This car drives like the Porsche for about 15K less cash. Excellent capability this winter in the snow, excellent handling.

Ive owned this Touareg for about 4000 miles now. Its a great SUV as far as the the ride and handling. Im not going to complain about the terrible gas mileage. I mean someone else already mentioned this, ITS A 5500 LB SUV! What bothers me is the cheap plastic they used on in the interior! The decals on the radio presets and on the fans, etc. The supposedly buttons for a garage door opener do not work. Took it to the dealer..he said "use your own opener"...and the stereo controls...shouldnt they be on the steering wheel? Bells and whistles dont mean much if they dont work. Oh, and the VW logo in the center of the wheels, is glued on!

I have a special edition Touareg with 19" wheels, DVD Navigation and other goodies. The car is very competent in traffic, freeway, tight roads, and rough roads. Its fuel economy is not good, but we knew that when we bought it. In 3,000 miles, the only two complaints we have is that the radio or CD player comes on with the backup camera, even if it was off when the car was parked. The other problem is the navigation system is useless. Though not difficult to use it is cumbersome, slow, and usually does not have an address in the database. We still use our $500 Garmin GPS if we need navigation help.

I looked at em all and the 2006 Volkswagen Touareg is by far the best. My single complaint is that the V6 needs a little more get-up-and- go. The lack of power wouldnt keep me from buying the vehicle again, but it is a minor drawback. However, the positives far outweigh the negatives on this vehicle. It handles incredibly well given its weight - you actually feel safer because it feels like you are driving a tank built by Porsche. I almost didnt look at this vehicle because VW has done a poor of job advertising. Even their website and brochure do not describe this vehicle well. Some of the coolest features arent found in their literature. Believe me, one test drive & your hooked.

This is my third Touareg, I am sold on the V8, it meets my needs. The V6 was sluggish and slow to engage. I guess I am hooked.

This is a very fine and high quality vehicle. Its gas mileage could be better. I consider this the poor mans Porche.

So far so good. I compared my Touareg with competitive models and VW surprisingly came out way on top in terms of price / feature ratio and comfort / performance ratio. BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus really have nothing over this VW.
