Pros:
  • Sharper handling than you would expect from a Volvo, T5 version offers quick acceleration, well-designed interior controls, long list of safety features, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • Firm suspension can be choppy on the highway, average performance from the non-turbo engine.

  • Great Car! - 2005 Volvo S40

    I love this car! I bought the car a year ago as my first car and its awesome. Ive read everywhere that its amazingly safe and I dont doubt it. The car looks great inside out and I have never had any major mechanical issues with it. This car works great in the snow (at least the AWD model). If you keep up with regular maintenance and actually care for the vehicle you shouldnt run into any problems.

    Outstanding. The real benefit that isnt advertised with the Volvo Safety is with the new DTSC system, you dont HAVE accidents. I drove this car on a Test Track in Germany for 8 hours under all conditions and couldnt spin it out in any circumstance. It is incredible. This is my first AWD vehicle and its handling in snow and ice is better than on dry pavement with my old rear wheel drive cars.

    First of all, never ever buy a car from Pioneer Saab Volvo in Deerfield, MA. Im finally straightening the mess my dealer made- 2 years later. I love my S40. Its my first volvo-styling, size, mileage, ride...all works for me. In the last year Ive had many problems. One year after having the car the heat stopped working, it took volvo a month to get me the part and appt so I drove around freezing for a month, they had to replace a major motor part. Twice since July, my AC has stopped working and my radio also glitches all the time. Im debating selling because the warranty is going to run out soon, but I just love it otherwise--Im torn. Do the 06 or 07s have these problems?

    When I 1st saw the S40 in the LA auto show Jan 2003 I knew I was going to buy one. Picked it over my other want cars. RX8 too gas guzzler, BMW 3 series too common now, Audi A4 less power for more money, and Mini Coop selling more than invoice. If the S Coop was around 18K I would buy that instead. The T5 6 spd manual is perfect. Its got power when you need it yet it can get 33 MPG going up the mountains through the grape vine at 70 mph no traffic drive in cold morning air. High torque at low rpms making it easy to beat the young car aftermarket ad on enthusiasts. Quiet drive as if youre not even trying to speed up. Handling is great but car feels stiff or choppy at freeways.

    My husband and I test drove a nissan altima as well as the volvo s40 we purchased. It was an easy decision, only thing the altmia had over the volvo was more leg room for rear seating. Volvo S40 is a solid car and a fun car to drive. It was like going from the Motel 6 to the Omni.

    I purchased my S40 T5 in August 2004. It is actually a 2004.5(2005). To date, I have 32K miles on the car and still handles and performs like I just drove it off the lot. The only problem I have had with the car was a defective security chip (15K miles). Once replaced, not another problem. This car feels safe and secure. The car also loves the highway. Cruising an interstate at 80-85mph seems to be the speed this car loves. I just hope I can keep evading speeding tickets. Acceleration you ask? Well..A co-worker has an BMW M3 and he has trouble trying to get away from me ..{{Smiling}} Would I buy another S40 T5? YES! Without a second thought and the price is right. {{Wink}}

    I bought this car used a year and a half ago and after much debate while searching for a car, I am still 100% in love with my S40. The "high" maintenance bills (it did need the timing belt replaced for being over 100k - $700) and "Volvo" stigma were intimidating at first, but now that Ive had the car I know it was still a solid choice. Its got all the features I wanted, gets good gas mileage and is a great looking car. 30k on it in my year and a half of ownership (now 135k) and it still runs like a champ!

    Picked up a loaded T5... Was going to order a 2.4i but opted to drive the turbo... Worlds apart in acceleration. The car just wants to fly coming out of second gear. Sixth gear is great travling down the interstate. Handling is good on back roads. Little rough on the interstate, but that is to be expected. All the controls are laid out nicely - Center stack is really neat, did not even notice the storage behind it. Options on car - Premium, Sport, Audio, Climate, Convenience, DSTC, and BI- Xeon...
