This Year's Model Updates:

For 2006, Volvo has rearranged some of the S40's option packages and revised the cupholders. Steering wheel-mounted satellite audio controls are now standard on the 2.4i trim, and the six-speed manual transmission on T5 models gains a pushdown function to engage reverse. There are also new 16- and 17-inch wheel designs and a new optional air filtration system for the T5 that Volvo says goes beyond traditional carbon filters to help reduce occupant exposure to carbon monoxide.

Pros:
  • Sharper handling than you would expect from a Volvo, cutting-edge style inside and out, straightforward controls, long list of safety features, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:

  • Solid and fairly speedy - 2006 Volvo S40

Wife just leased a 2006 S40 T5 AWD. I own a 2005 S4 so my opinions may be biased. I was impressed how comfortable the drive is, the smooth handling and 6-speed gearbox, nice acceleration for 218 hp in the lower revs despite the cars weight, broad torque band, simple yet sophisticated interior, decent navigational system, "thud" sound of the closing doors, overall sporty styling.

My 2nd car, was driving a 99" Saab 9-5 before. I love this car, the "Sporty- S40" as I call it. The day I brought it home my sister fell in love with it and got 1 also. They have great colors and the T-tec is sweet, everything comes right off it. Not flashy interior, very classy and simple. Get the sound package!!! 12 speakers its insane!!! great clarity as well. Although the 2.4i (my model) has 168hp 5 spd it is very quick (but if u have the extra 6 grand get the T5! 220hp 6 spd turbo). I have the Mysterial Green it looks very nice with the tinted windows. Great value as well, the only car that is comparable is the Acura TSX, a friend has it (he enjoys my car better) well worth it!

If you are looking for a safe, fun little car to drive, then this is the one for you. Whether it be around town, on winding country roads, or on the freeway, this car performs as if it had the heart of a sports car (with a more comfortable ride of course). For the value, this will beat any BMW 3 series, any Mercedes C-Class, and any Infinity G class.

  • Noise Problem - 2006 Volvo S40

The car has 7,000 miles on it and has developed a noise in the drive train. Volvo has replaced the tranny, the clutch, the shocks, the motor mounts and the axles. They now say that the sound is normal!

  • ehh, its ok... - 2006 Volvo S40

this car does not perform. its got a bit of turbo but it doesnt effectively come on until higher rpms of third gear. the car handles like a beast. high center of gravity, extreme understeer. this car may initially spark the interest of a twenty-something looking to mod this swedish turbo, but they will find little in the way of aftermarket support. this is a great car for mommies with a heavy foot... but watch out for that gas mileage. mines terrible. boy racers: look elsewhere... you wouldnt want to pay this much to be whipped by an accord (which gets better mps). push it on the backroads and youll end up in a ditch. handling is that bad. car needs more R&D

  • This car is a lemon! - 2006 Volvo S40

Within the first year of owning this car it had to be flatbed towed due to a faulty steering column. The doors and locks would not respond to either the key or the controls inside the car. Volvo looked at it 3 times before they could determine the problem.I had to drive there while the problem was happening to prove I wasnt crazy. I have 60k miles and I have to spend $1600 on a new clutch and clutch slave cylindar. the car is 4 yrs old and just over the warranty. Volvo will not take any ownership of the costs. A clutch should not break in 4 years. I am a very experienced standard transmission driver and it was not due to my handling. This car is a money pit! stay away at all costs.

I have owned my S40 for 5 months now, and I am still completely satisfied with my purchase. Its a great looking car, fun to drive and I feel very safe knowing its a Volvo. I also get a lot of compliments on it! I would highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a compact car.

My Volvo S40 is the most comfortable car that I have ever driven in. I am very glad that I purchased this vehicle. It is rated as one of the safest cars, and I always feel safe when I am driving in it.

Driving is fun, safety is superb, look is sleek...as my 20 year old son told me..."Mom, you got yourself a sexy little car!"
