Overview & Reviews
For 2006, Volvo has rearranged some of the S40's option packages and revised the cupholders. Steering wheel-mounted satellite audio controls are now standard on the 2.4i trim, and the six-speed manual transmission on T5 models gains a pushdown function to engage reverse. There are also new 16- and 17-inch wheel designs and a new optional air filtration system for the T5 that Volvo says goes beyond traditional carbon filters to help reduce occupant exposure to carbon monoxide.
- Sharper handling than you would expect from a Volvo, cutting-edge style inside and out, straightforward controls, long list of safety features, available all-wheel drive.

Best Bang for your Buck - 2006 Volvo S40
By Mikey Z - February 12 - 11:30 pmMy new S40 is incredible. I am 23 pre-dental student who never gave a thought to a Volvo until a friend recommended it. Now, I cant say enough about it. Its safety features are incredible and beat the heck out of its competitors. Not to mention that it rides very well, not too stiff, not too soft, but can handle curves and speed impresssivly well. Bottom line, it is safe, sporty, fun, and looks hot.

Sporty, Zippy, Peppy - 2006 Volvo S40
By Fun Driver - February 8 - 3:23 amThis is a sports car that will handle almost anything. Ive had it for a month now and driven everywhere. The handling is outstanding on mountain roads. The engine never showed signs of exhertion. In the city, its an eye-catcher because its different from the "traditional" Volvo. The money is well worth it if youre comparing with BMW, Audi, Acura, and Lexus.

Such a dissappointment - 2006 Volvo S40
By Bethanyraina - February 5 - 1:13 amI was so excited when I bought this car. I have always wanted a volvo and did my research on what a great car this was supposed to be. I have had nothing but problems since I bought it. First the air didnt work, then the side mirrors wouldnt work. Then the AC didnt work again. At least all of that was covered by warranty. Now, after 4 years and no warranty, the entire electrical system is failing, telling me the air bags will deploy, brakes dont work, its locked me in and out of the car numerous times, alarm goes off for no reason. It will cost me close to 3k to fix. This shouldnt happen after four years. Very disappointed, and will never buy a volvo ever again.

My first Volvo, but not my last. - 2006 Volvo S40
By Diana C - December 18 - 11:43 amGreat looking car. I love the sporty lines, while retaining its classy look. Gone are the days when Volvo was boxy and predictable. Volvo proves a sedan can be sporty.

Awesome Car - 2006 Volvo S40
By JMc - October 2 - 8:56 amI purchased this car with every bell and whistle available. I got the 6- speed manual transmission, and the car drives very sporty. With the exception of the initial smell from the vents, I love everything about this car! The car handles great and is comfortable. I average about 23 mpg. With the rear split seat folded down, I can fit 3 people and 3 sets of golf clubs. Other than routine maintenance and a few recalls, the vehicle has not been to the shop.

Driving in the snow - 2006 Volvo S40
By dana - August 22 - 1:03 pmThis is my first Volvo. I have previously owned SUVs and also similar sized cars, like the Accord and a Camry. This car handles great on drive pavement. I love the zippiness and great gas mileage. Overall, it is a wonderful car. However, it does not handle well in snow or rain. In fact it is just a step better than a RWD car. This is my second winter with this car and I am so dissappointed.

Bethanys Volvo S40 - 2006 Volvo S40
By BRH - August 17 - 4:36 pmThe new S40 is NOT your fathers Volvo! The recently revamped 2005 S40 has Volvos signature elegance and class, yet - despite its (somewhat boring) reputation for safety and reliability -- is incredibly fun to drive and punchy. I would recommend this car to anyone looking for class, excitement, and reliability at a price that is surprisingly easy-to-swallow.

best buy in the luxury entry level class - 2006 Volvo S40
By joseph from rockford - July 27 - 8:16 ami was looking for a 4 door sedan for my wife. we looked at the 3 series bmw (too pricey when options are added in) the audi A4 (wife hated the styling) and the C class mercedes (my choice, but it wasnt for me) we(she) choose the volvo for its safty features. i wound up buying it because comparably equipped it was several thousands less that its german counterparts. the drivers seat with its 12 way power and lumbar support is more comfortable than most family room recliners. it has all the bells and whistles to keep the conversation going at the country club. and its a good looking car. complaints? maybe the faux wood. but the dealer we bought from was first class. would buy again.

Great car, even with a few flaws! - 2006 Volvo S40
By Matt - June 29 - 12:53 amI absolutely love this car! I fell in love with it as soon as I took it out for the test drive. Sharp looking and gets lots of attention. I really only have 2 issues with the car. First, city mileage isnt what I expected it to be. I do almost all of my driving in-city and find myself at the gas pump more than I expected. Second, the rear brakes have started to squeal when backing up, and the problem seems to be a mystery. Ive had the car in twice (with a 3rd looming). Ive done some checking online and found my problem, while not widespread, is not unique to my car either (no solution IDd). Its a frustrating issue that I shouldnt be dealing with on a car 4200 miles in.
