This Year's Model Updates:

The top-of-the-line W8 model has been discontinued. The GLX loses its standard telematics system. New 16-inch "Rockstar" alloy wheels are standard on the GLS (in place of the former 15s), and new 17-inch "Bistar" alloys are optional on the GLS and GLX.

Pros:
  • Better handling dynamics than most sedans in its class, excellent value in GL or GLS trim, roomy interior with upscale feel, outstanding build and materials quality, available all-wheel drive, unique diesel engine option.
Cons:
  • Upper-level models are expensive compared to Japanese rivals, less rear-seat room and storage than competitors, V6 is down on power.

  • Great Car With A Few Problems - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

Overall, Ive had a great experience (short, so far) with my Passat. Its extremely fun to drive and gets pretty good gas mileage. At 9,000 miles, it hasnt visted the shop yet, although the engine seems to be slightly noisy and has a light rattle.

I love to step on the gas (fuel) pedal and feel the smooth, rapid acceleration. This car will run. Its handling is superb. It is a very safe car. It gets about 30-32 mpg at 8 0mph with the a/c on. It has a huge trunk. It hauls five adults with ease and has no difficulty handling or accelerating with a load. It does have a slight vibration at idle from the motor, but no one complains. Most are surprised when they find out its a diesel. This is my second VW diesel. The first was a Golf TDI which got totaled. We were sandwiched in a wreck, drove the car home five miles, and were surprised when the insurance company totaled. it. My wife wanted a trunk, so we got the Passat. It is a good car.

  • Almost 600 Miles on one Tank! - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

The Volkwagon Passat Wagon TDI is just the best car I have ever owned. I get almost 600 miles on one tank of gas driving at 85 mph!

Handling is typically European tight. Acceleration is more than adequate for everyday situations. The GL environmental system is basic, but it works well. The GL level trim is basic and affordable at $ 23,000.00. No sunroof. No electric seats. This really a basic driving machine. The feel is solid, with good quakity finish. I recently drove a rental Nissan Altima & prefer the VW GL TDI hands down!

I have had my 2005 Passat TDI for a little over a year now. I absolutely love it! Not only does it provide a comfortable ride and good looks, it gets awesome fuel mileage. I do a lot of driving and I fill the tank on average about every two weeks. Also, it is very roomy and has lots of trunk space. The shiftable automatic transmission is nice too. It is a great car to have.

  • Best VW yet - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

We have owned a bug (1972), Jetta (1987) and Golf (1995), and this Passat (2005). This car was picked by my wife with automatic, but the TDI was my idea. I was slow to warm to this car. Too fancy for my taste. But as time goes on, this car is becoming my favorite sedan. Solid build, no mechanical problems at all, and an ultimate highway ride (with 38-40 mpg!). The planets lined up right for the 2005 Passat TDI. Cant wait for my next VW TDI. Im hooked.

  • Great in the snow - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

This is my 2nd Passat wagon, the all wheel drive is fantastic! This was a tough winter on Maine and the Passat was like a tractor when the going got bad.

I really enjoy my Passat, because it is reliable and fun to drive. The interior is very comfortable; it has heated seating that really helps in the winter. My favorite thing about the car is the AWD. It drives wonderfully in the winter weather with no problems at all. You can hardly tell that you are driving in snow and ice. The car is quite and drives smooth. You can hardly tell that you are driving it. This car has definitly made VW the top car for me. I will never buy anything else other than a VW.

  • Love It, Love It, Love It - 2005 Volkswagen Passat

I have had my Passat for a full year now and I love it even more today than I did the day I drove it home. The car is so fun to drive, so comfortable and who can complain about 36 MPG back and forth to work and 43 MPG on the highway? I absolutely love this car and it is not bad to look at either. Pretty much the only things I would change is that I would add more cupholders throughout the vehicle and the ability to completely turn off the headlights without shutting down the engine (I have to go through a guard gate to get to work and the guards yell at me all the time because I have my lights on in their faces).

  • Best Car on the Market in The 20K Range - 2005 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

This car is my first diesel and the best value youll ever get in the $20,00 range, especially now with gas prices over $3.00 per gallon. I have had the car for four months. I recently took a road trip of about 280 miles, mostly highway and got an unbelieveable 43.2 MPG! Why does the sticker on the new car say 27 - 38 MPG? I average 34 mpg around town. This car is not lacking in power and built with quality standards. It drives and handles every bit like my 1999 E320 Mercedes-Benz. Now I fight my wife just to drive the car every once in a while. You get an extremely safe car with 6 airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction control. Also, the stock stereo systems is like the high end models on other cars. The trunk space is huge!
