Overview & Reviews
For 2004, all Jetta models get an updated look, optional telematics and a new and more powerful 1.9-liter TDI engine (GL and GLS models only). The 2.0-liter engine is now PZEV-rated, and the GLX trim is no longer available. Also note that you can no longer get the 1.8T engine in GL trim. Besides that, the GLI sedan sports new 17-inch alloy wheels and the Cold Weather Package items (heated seats and washer nozzles) as standard, while the GLS features a standard Monsoon stereo. The wagons get a revised instrument cluster late in the model year, and the sedans get new metallic trim rings around the gauges.
- Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI power plant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard safety features, solid build quality.
- More expensive than most small sedans and wagons, tight rear-seat legroom, weak base four-cylinder.

Excellent Warranty - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
By jmkeat0 - June 2 - 2:00 amI bought my car on a Saturday, and it has been in the shop since the following Monday. The fuel gauge stopped working, and the dealership is trying to figure out why. For the brief period of time that I drove my new car, it was excellent. Im anxiously awaiting her return.

Good car, lots of little problems - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
By Justin - April 25 - 2:26 pmBased on the criteria above, I gave the Jetta 1.8T a good review. Overall, this is a very nice looking and fun car to drive. There are, however, a lot of little things that frustrate me. The check engine light comes on a lot. I read the code, and its a problem with the coolant temp sensor. Not a big deal, but still. The interior rattles a TON. Pretty disappointing for a car of this caliber (read price). The gas mileage is okay. 25-26 mixed, 28-29 hwy. Now in winter its 23mpg. Cost of maintenance is high. The ride is pretty stiff. On smooth roads is like butter. On anything less than smooth, you feel every bump (and hear it via the interior rattles). Not as worry free as I would like.

Long Term Happiness - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
By tdiguy3 - March 18 - 1:25 pmI bought this car new in 2004. In the 9.5 years I have owned this car it has bean, overall, fantastic. I have kept up regular service. The major problems I have had are: a sensor, front wheel bearing, rear wheel bearing, the heater blower motor, and a the heater resistors...replaced a few times. The heater repairs I did myself so cost was just the parts. Considering I have had this car this long and have almost 260k on it, this is small potatoes. Overall this has been the most reliable car I have owned. It was not built in Mexico but rather came out of the Wolfsburg plant and that is why, in my opinion it has been such a great car. I have had no engine or tranny probs at all.

Dont - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
By LisasJetta - December 9 - 10:00 amI bought this car brand new with less than 50 miles. I have had nothing but problems and its been in the shop more than Ive been able to drive it. Dont count on Volkswagon to help you out either as they have been nothing but rude with me whenever Ive called to complain of all of the problems. If I were you, Id look elsewhere for a car.

Economy car with luxury maintenance cost - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
By Keiller - April 28 - 10:00 amHow does $10/liter for oil sound? Thats what my dealer tried to sell it to me for. I went online and bought it for $6.40/Liter. How does $34/liter for transmission fluid sound? Thats what my dealer wants. Again, I went online and found it for half that (which is still outrageous!). I wanted fuel efficiency and thats why I bought the Jetta TDI, but its an expensive car to operate. Buy a Honda...I wish I had.

Cant Stop Redlining! - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
By JT - March 31 - 4:56 pmI have had the car for a year. I have had only one problem, the front rotors were replaced (wrapped). Thats it. I have had no electrical problems at all. I do have ratles in the doors though. This car is fun to drive and really holds on the turns. Also, this cars ECU can be reprogrammed to increase the HP. So if your looking for more HP for cheap.. it can be done. Doing this completly changes the car. Its still a beautiful car even today.

Junk! - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
By kady - March 14 - 3:06 pmI bought my Jetta 3 years ago. I had it for about 5 months before it started having serious electrical issues. After letting off the accelerator the car will just shut off and all the service lights will start beeping. Also sometimes after turning off the car and opening the door all the cab lights flash as well as the clock on the dash. Sometimes the car wont start at all. I have been taking it to VW dealership service shops and other shops that specialize in foreign cars for two years and no one can tell me what is wrong with it.
