This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, all Jetta models get an updated look, optional telematics and a new and more powerful 1.9-liter TDI engine (GL and GLS models only). The 2.0-liter engine is now PZEV-rated, and the GLX trim is no longer available. Also note that you can no longer get the 1.8T engine in GL trim. Besides that, the GLI sedan sports new 17-inch alloy wheels and the Cold Weather Package items (heated seats and washer nozzles) as standard, while the GLS features a standard Monsoon stereo. The wagons get a revised instrument cluster late in the model year, and the sedans get new metallic trim rings around the gauges.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI power plant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard safety features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons, tight rear-seat legroom, weak base four-cylinder.

Bought it for business mostly freeway driving to max MPG. Getting 46 to 53 MPG with plenty of power. Except for a little puff of blue smoke on cold start up cannot tell it is a diesel. Running great so far. Really neat little car for one person. Not really enough room for passengers. Terrible back seats for passengers but easy to lay down for storage of lugguge. Blue instrument panel lighting takes a little getting use to but looks cool. Been in snow and ice for two weeks now. Manual trans really helps. Have 4000 miles on it now and would buy it again.

  • VW Diesel Rocks! - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Great little car. I run it using Biodiesel, which makes good sense to me. Better for the environment. Only complaint is the seats arent comfortable and the gaps between the seats are difficult to clean and reach those items that just disappear! Exterior paint scratches easily. Windows are tight when electronically moved up and down. Great performance and holding on curves. Love the mileage anyhwere from 45-55 mpg. All around, would highly recommend this turbodiesel engine. No bad odors and It flys!

I hear occasional creaking from the door and under the dash area when driving (mostly when making fast turns or going over bumps). This is my only problem with the car, aside from its seemingly lower gas mileage for a car of its size. I was told at a VW dealership that the body was re- enforced by 50% on the new body style, so that is definitely something to consider.

  • OH NO!!! - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

My Jetta only has 368 miles on it and (already) the power windows, the map lights and the power locks stopped working! I read the reviews about the 2002 models and the horror stories about the windows falling into the doors never to return. I figured by now the manufacturer would have its &^%$ together. Come on VW...Stop drinking on the assembly line!!!

  • Make them in Germany please - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

I own two Jettas: a 2003 sedan, and a 2004 wagon, both GLS 1.8T 5M. The sedan is made in Mexico; the Wagon in Germany. What a difference. I dont know whether it is coincidence, but squeaks and rattles are the norm in the Mexican-built, whereas the German- built is solid as an Audi.

Excellent fuel milage. First trip on the highway 52.3. Around town 35. Great for an automatic. Only 3000 miles on the car. Plenty of power. handles well.

  • Fun Car, Good Price, Some Flaws - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

The Jetta GLI is a very attractive car with a number of very unique features unavailable to most cars in the same price range - the recaro seats, sound system, 6-speed transmission and interior detailing are all a cut above what you would expect, but do tack on a couple thousand to a comparable GLSs purchase price. The car drives very well, has a very responsive transmission, tight and well balanced brakes and a very typically German feel in tight high-speed turning maneuvers. That said, our car required three trips to the dealership for loud, high-pitched squealing in the rear brakes and the front ground effects are extremely fragile. A thread tear in the recaro seating had to be fixed too.

I bought the Jetta primarily for my wife, but Ive been doing a lot of the driving and I love the way the car handles. Its fun to drive and I love the turbo and the gas mileage. Overall, were very satisfied so far with this car.

  • Fun to drive! - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought this car new from the VW dealership in 2004. I drove it for 120,000 miles and then gave it to my college aged son who has put another 130,000 miles on it. I loved the car and he still loves the car. The car has always been quick and it still runs just as well now with over 250k miles as it did when I drove it off the lot new. We have always used Pennzoil full synthetic oil and have changed it at about 7-9k intervals. At around 200k we changed the timing belt. This has been a really good car. I keep telling my son to put back some $$ for another car as this one is getting some miles on it. Ive been telling him that for 3 years now. He doesnt want to trade it, it just is too good of a car, still.

  • exspensive upkeep - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

I had a tdi 4 door and Demontrond dealer in houston was horrible on maintenance. Went in for a $55 dollar oil change and they stripped the drain plug and charged me $75 dollars to fix? Needless to say I no longer own a jetta and never will again. Check with dealer to see what cost are for common repairs and you will probably go with a honda or toyota if your smart.
