This car is an awesome car. it is very good to drive around. I would recommend it for college students who do not have a lot of gas money. It is also very easy to find a parking space for this car due to its size.

Weve been a one car family for over six years (2003 TDI Golf) and are about to purchase our second car. Were buying another VW TDI Golf. Why? We couldnt find a better, more efficient car period - let alone for the price. It feels like a safe car - not tinny like the Hondas and Toyotas Ive driven in the past. His and hers TDI Golfs. Need I say more?

"Thats a diesel?" You get that a lot at the gas stations, as well as attendants shutting the pump off on you to helpfully "save" your car. Youd be hard pressed to know its a diesel, as well. Sure, from the outside its definitely louder at idle (up to about 1600rpm its got that diesel clatter), and theres no smoke or fumes from the engine, either. On the coldest days, it needed no more than 15 seconds for the glowplugs to do their job, and itll start right up. The HP is low, but dont let this deter you. You wont notice with the torquey engine and gearing ratios. The Tiptronic feature of the auto 5spd isnt exciting, shift lag is high. On the other hand, itll let you hold a gear for climbing, etc

  • Been a Year of Highs - 2005 Volkswagen Golf

After owning the car just over a year I could never imagine driving anything else. The best milage Ive gotten is 53 mpg and the worst is 45 mpg. This is not bad for a car with an EPA rating of 38/42. The car has been great on trips and as a daily driver. Ive used the cargo space to help move friends. This has been the most versatile car Ive ever owned. The torque lets me cruise for miles and go over passes in top gear, or squirt up to the speed limit around town with ease. Ive rarely ever felt that I needed more that what the little diesel offers.

All in all this has been the best purchase weve ever made. Its only been a couple of weeks & I havent filled up the tank yet! this is an incredible car, and fun to drive. We would recommend this vehicle to anyone wanting to skip the high price gas lines. If the extra room is what you need, look into the diesel Jetta!

Coming from England to US, I have driven many cars. The GOLF TDI is a popular car in a market where a very large percentage are diesel due to the price of gas. The golf is very well built, solid and offers many air bags. The handling and styling of the car is excellent - golf owners appreciate their reliable, frugal workhorse and once bitten rarely stop becoming VW owners. The quality of the build is excellent and as is the Monsoon sound system. My primary reason for buying was to get a safe, well-built, reliable, quality car which offered good gas mileage. I get around 40 mpg which is excellent - my only regret is not looking at a passat TDI - rear legroom space is limited.

  • Love this car - 2005 Volkswagen Golf

Ive had this car for 6 months and love it. It rides like a German sedan. The base engine has plenty of power at sea level and pulls smoothly if you learn the power curve. People at higher altitudues that climb hills and need more passing power should opt for the 1.8T engine. I am getting about 330-400 miles per tank. The best Ive averaged on a tank is about 27.5 MPG (30 MPG on the highway is possible if you didnt go over 65/70 MPH). Also, the interior is very nice for such an inexpensive car. The A/C is cold/strong. The stereo is better than expected. It fits four. This car isnt for the pocket rocket crowd. It is a better fit for the urban dweller or person who wants an inexpensive car that doesnt feel cheap.

This is one of the most solid autos Ive had in a long time. It is much more solid and quiet than my old Honda Civic, although the Honda was a very good car. The VW seems better. I also tried out a Toyota. It was very noisy and tinny sounding inside.

  • Too many problems - 2005 Volkswagen Golf

Bought Golf GLS M/T new Jan/2006. Had a great run for the first few years. It handles great, is a lot of fun to drive and looks good. But, once it was out of warranty, the problems started. At about 44,000 miles/7 yrs., the master cylinder (brakes) needed to be replaced, and rotors. Internal engine oil leak - new transmission needed before 50,000 miles. Hood latch broke 2x. Strange front thumping noise that cannot be diagnosed began in 9th year. Around year 6 the armrest latch broke. Around year 8 the glove compartment latch broke. And this is from a single driver - hardly ever passengers, no kids - so these things were hardly ever opened. Loved the car but would not buy again.

  • Good for the long haul. - 2005 Volkswagen Golf

I drive about 115 miles round trip to work. All I have ever done is change the oil (about every 12-15k miles), replace a couple head lights, and change the tires. My car has yet to need brakes or any major repair. The perfect stylish, fun to drive, daily commuter!
