This Year's Model Updates:

The speedy 1.8T four-door has been eliminated from the Golf lineup. A CD player now comes standard on the GLS model, and the GL trim level is available both in two- and four-door configurations. Mojave Beige joins the color spectrum. Also new for the 2002 model year, all Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.

Pros:
  • Fun-to-drive, lots of standard goodies, hatchback design offers excellent cargo utility.
Cons:
  • Limited engine choices with departure of 1.8T four-door, some controls hard to decipher, handling could be crisper, dated styling.

  • Two years later - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Very good car, no engine or electrical gremlins to date. In two years, the following warranty repairs have occurred: Exterior window seals replaced twice on both doors; right headlamp broke inside, replaced whole assembly; window regulators changed to updated metal clips; Monsoon radio changed (known problem on 2002); front end chirp noise over broken pavement, manhole covers, etc. Dealer cannot find problem and Ive paid an independent shop to inspect front end. May be brake caliper components, but Im not spending more money to have it diagnosed and dealer cannot find anything wrong. The numerous rattles do take away from the overall driving experience

  • Best hatchback for the buck - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

My 4 door Golf GL with 5 speed transmission is one of the best purchases I have ever made. The attention to detail in the exterior and the interior is amazing. Everything is very well made and durable. I only have 400 miles on it so far, but the gas milage is already superb. The hatchback design is very useful, and the two extra doors in the back really provide extra utility. Looks and feels way more expensive than it is. People who sit in it dont believe me when I tell them it only cost me $15,095 (before tax of course). If you are considering a focus, civic, lancer or the like I urge you to test drive one of these.

  • Less room, more fun... - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

I picked my new 2002 Golf GLS yesterday. I bought it 3 days ago for $15,200 without the taxes and extended warranty ($900 extra for 7 year, 75 K miles with road side assistance). Im an Audi fan, and had an old Audi before I decided to buy a new car. But I had to stick to the $16,000 range as Im getting married. The Corolla, Civic and Sentra were possible choices. All these cars had similar seating space except that the rear leg room for the golf is smaller by an inch. But the golf has a bigger cargo area.

  • My 2nd update. - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

I put another 16K miles on my TDI since we last spoke and I am still happy (although I did go through 2 unpleasant experiences). I had the front window problem: well, my window basically fell into the door when I was going about 70mph on the highway. The linkage broke (as VW vaguely warned) and nothing was holding it in place. They replaced both linkages with no questions. I had an EGR problem: the car would not start one morning - it would crank but no fire. Had to tow to dealer and they had to replace the EGR valve. For detailed info on EGR go to tdiclub website, but it basically got stuck in an open position and it prevented oxygen from entering. Warranty is great.

  • GOLF - Simply awesome - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

I considered the Focus, Saturn, Civic, and Sentra before I finally settled on my Golf. Dont let the 115 HP fool you. Its got some umph!! The Golf feels like it should be $5,000 more than it costs. The Monsoon sounds great and the Indiglo Blue looks great. Heated seats, washers, and mirrors will be nice come December. Crash data an added plus.
