The speedy 1.8T four-door has been eliminated from the Golf lineup. A CD player now comes standard on the GLS model, and the GL trim level is available both in two- and four-door configurations. Mojave Beige joins the color spectrum. Also new for the 2002 model year, all Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.

- Limited engine choices with departure of 1.8T four-door, some controls hard to decipher, handling could be crisper, dated styling.

Get one if you can - 2002 Volkswagen Golf

It has 175000 miles on it and is by far the lowest-cost joy of a car we have ever owned. Going for 300,000+! Only the two-seat Honda Insight tops it for freeway-driving economy and this has no multi-thousand- dollar battery battery bank overhauls looming in the future!

This car has a huge trunk/hatch area that will haul lots of stuff, the rear doors make getting in and out of the back seats easy - easier than the Jetta. The drivers seat is comfortable and supportive. Driving position is great. Visibility is good but the pillar between the front and back seats sometimes blocks your vision. Monsoon Stereo sounds fabulous and I love the sunroof, also. Believe it or not, I love driving to work every day in this car! The sporty little TDI engine is very peppy and strong, and will definitely surprise you. I average 43MPG all city driving. Car feels like a quality product. No cheap plastic here.

Great Golf TDI - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
By Brian - January 17 - 1:30 amWe tested numerous cars when deciding to purchase my wifes 2001 Volkswagen Golf TDI. After driving hers several times I knew I wanted one just like it. I drive 38 miles to work each day and the car handles great, is quiet, has lots of pep, and I get around around 49 MPG if I keep my foot out of it. I ordered the Monsoon radio package and I have had problems with reception but the sound is spot on. Ive been waiting for the 06 Golf TDI but it now looks like June of 06 before we get the new body style. You can see new body style Golfs by Googleing New Golf. Try not to drool on yourself. I have seen one here that was brought back to the states by a guy in the Air Force. Unlike 06 Jetta, the new Golf looks excellent!

No, it does not have as much power as my other two cars, but its a Golf not a full-race 850 BMW either. I have transported engines, one treadmill and stuffed it full for one move--I like it.

It is much more refined, has better materials, and feels more substantial than the Hybrid cars, and is cheaper in sticker price and fuel (at least here in California, diesel is 10/15% cheaper than gas). Tons of room for passengers and groceries, too.

The fit and finish of the interior is that of the Audi A4. The car looks and feels solid with its tight and consistent gaps in the exterior seams. ( doors, hood, etc. ) Volkwagen has cornered the market in the under $20,000.00 class!

By Steves TDI - May 25 - 8:43 amIve owned this car for 4 years and I think it just may be the best car Ive ever owned. It gets great gas milage, 40/51. It has had no maintenance issues. I just change the oil every 5,000 miles. Its comfortable, responsive, and fun to drive. When this one wears out at 500,000 miles, or maybe a million miles Ill gladly sell it and buy another. I live in upstate NY and winter weather worries with a diesel have never been an issue for me.

A great small car - 2002 Volkswagen Golf
By 2fastdre - March 15 - 2:00 amI really enjoy my Golf GLS TDI and have almost 14K miles on it already. The fuel economy is excellent and rivals that of electric hybrid cars. I have not got lower than 45 MPG in mixed driving even through the cold winter months. Although 90 HP is not impressive, the 155 LB-FT of low end torque is what makes the around town and Colorado Rocky Mountain drives very satisfying. Even when loaded, this thing cruises along in 5th gear at about 2200 RPM up slopes where 96 4cyl Legacy has to scream at more than 4000 RPM in lower gear to maintain the same speed. I would recommend this car to anyone who is shopping for a small car.
