Overview & Reviews
For the 2002 model year, the GLS and GLX trim levels are dropped. Instead, choose from the juiced-up 180-horsepower turbocharged inline four (that can be mated to a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic) or the VR6 engine. The current 174-horsepower, 12-valve VR6 will be replaced with a 24-valve unit good for producing 200 horsepower in the spring of 2002. Later on, a special-edition model called the GTI 337 will arrive with a six-speed manual hooked up to the 180-horse 1.8T, as well as 18-inch wheels, 225/45VR18 performance rubber, a ground effects kit, genuine Recaro seats and red accents inside and out. All-new Volkswagen vehicles come standard with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.
- Fun to drive, reasonable price, lots of standard goodies, hatchback design offers excellent cargo utility, available six-speed manual.
- Some controls hard to decipher, handling could be crisper, dated styling.

Nice ride! - 2002 Volkswagen GTI
By Devin Gabriel - August 3 - 10:00 amPreviously I owned a 98 Jetta GLX VR6: the new A4 platform has signifigant improvements in quality, comfort, performance (handling/power), & such. Its been a blast to drive. Ive had minor problems with the driver side window making too much noise while rolling up & down, but otherwise, Ive been satisfied.

I love my rollerskate!!! - 2002 Volkswagen GTI
By octokai - June 9 - 2:00 amYes, I know at first glance some may not be attracted to the styling of this vehicle. It has put up with some tough nicknames as such as "golf putter" and "rollerskate"... However, this car is an awesome car to own in all aspects. The power, performance, reliability, and even safety are excellent. I would recommend this car to anyone... especially in stick!!! NO DRIVERS NEEDED!!!!!!!!

No Brainer - 2002 Volkswagen GTI
By Imago - June 1 - 10:00 amThis vehicle is an absolute no brainer. I have driven sport utes for years and after finally accepting that I simply do not off road, I opted to purchase a hatchback. The cargo area is huge after you flip the back seat bench and fold the back rests. Far and away the biggest bang for the buck in its class. The VR6 is an amazing engine, well worth the upgrade from the standard 1.8T. The motor is simply STRONG. Close your eyes, sign the contract and love yourself for years to come. This is the best car I have ever owned!!!

The Worst - 2002 Volkswagen GTI
By Jimmy - May 29 - 5:20 amIssues w/ terminal connections, burnt out fuse box on battery, always replacing head light/blinker and brake lights. Engine light always on, airbag light always on (had to replace seat belt buckle 4xs) newest addition, blown engine w/ 85k miles. Now replaced w/ rebuilt engine 2 weeks ago and engine light back on. Can you say lemon! Do not buy this car!

337 Review - 2002 Volkswagen GTI
By Adam337 - May 14 - 10:00 am9000 miles, not a single problem. This special edition is powerful, and extremely fun to drive. This is how all of those people who modify their cars wish their end result was half as nice as this. This car is well designed. It makes you feel as though you own/drive a more expensive car. The euro design is very refreshing, considering all of the poor taste -japanese cars out there now.

DO NOT BUY THIS CAR - 2002 Volkswagen GTI
By Joe - May 1 - 2:46 pmThis car is the worse investment I have ever made. Bought it used in 05 with 18,000 miles on it for $18,500 and have put over $9,000 in it on maintenance. Currently it does not run because the car leaks water very badly through the ceiling. I had to replace both axels, the clutch after about 2,000 miles in my ownership, i had suspension problems, turbo/exhaust problems, leaking all over the ceiling. About 20 different hoses and gauges replaced, no exaggeration. It was on 2010s Consumer Reports worse car list. Timing belt was replaced a lot sooner than is should be replaced because of issues, the Catalytic Converter was replaced, all of this because of the cars build quality.

GTI Rocks! - 2002 Volkswagen GTI
By tx gti lover - March 4 - 10:00 amI love my GTI! I bought it for the engine and hatchback and this car has never disappointed me. It has so many wonderful features and its very user- friendly. My experience with VW service makes Mr. Goodwrench look like a hack. And the roadside assistance is outstanding! Rather than Joes Haul-It, you get AAA when you buy a VW. After a year and a half, Im still thrilled with my GTI - all my car-buying money will go to VW for as long as I buy cars.
