This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2002 model year, the GLS and GLX trim levels are dropped. Instead, choose from the juiced-up 180-horsepower turbocharged inline four (that can be mated to a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic) or the VR6 engine. The current 174-horsepower, 12-valve VR6 will be replaced with a 24-valve unit good for producing 200 horsepower in the spring of 2002. Later on, a special-edition model called the GTI 337 will arrive with a six-speed manual hooked up to the 180-horse 1.8T, as well as 18-inch wheels, 225/45VR18 performance rubber, a ground effects kit, genuine Recaro seats and red accents inside and out. All-new Volkswagen vehicles come standard with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, reasonable price, lots of standard goodies, hatchback design offers excellent cargo utility, available six-speed manual.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, handling could be crisper, dated styling.

  • Could Not believe the value for price - 2002 Volkswagen GTI

This car is so fun to drive, and it gets a lot of attention. i have the black on black (leather) 17" wheels, sunroof, everything. Sometimes the acceleration is sluggish but I think its because its new. It will get better once it "breaks in". LOVE the car. its so fun to drive and the PRICE??? forgetaboutit! Best bargain for the money. I will definitely buy another GTI. Absolutely.

Ive drove a lot of VWs and this one is close to the best. I traded a 01 Golf GLS for the new Rabbit GTI 337. I lost the excellent gas mileage of 430 miles on one tank of fuel to about 300 miles on one tank that holds 14.5 gallons along with my sunroof. However i have gained the 180 horsepower 1.8T that is the same engine in the Audi TT or A4. The car also came with 18" wheels and a performance exhaust, Recaro Le mans seats and a body kit. I love my new VW.

I bought this car because of the exterior design and style but thats were it ends. This car was nothing but headaches and problems. I had problems with over heating, seat belt sensor, sunroof, alternator, battery, water pump, radio, ignition coils, engine hoses, coolant system, bad ECU, transmission, and thats just off the top of my head. Be ready to become best friends with your mechanic because youll be seeing him and a check engine light on a lot. Not to mention that all VW parts are extremely expensive. Safe your money people and get your self a honda or toyota. I would never buy another VW again i have sold it since and moved on to a honda best move ever made.

I have always liked VWs and this is my first. I am not sure what I was waiting for! Its quick, great on gas, has lots of room and looks great! To anybody in teh market for a "Hot Hatch", look no further! The Celica, RSX and Focus SVT dont have a chance!

  • A beautiful beast of a car... - 2002 Volkswagen GTI

This is pretty much one of the more amazing vehicles Ive driven. Its an attractively designed, well-modeled, performance oriented machine thats ridiculously fun to drive. To top it all off, its boosted. Granted, the turbo isnt huge, but it feels like a kick in the pants and pushes you down the road like you wouldnt believe. Theres not a rice- racer on the road that can take this car, stock. Too sweet. The only car that Ive driven that surpasses this is the Audi S4, but Im not sure the difference is worth another $20k. For a fun, safe, reliable, and above all boostable car, this is definitely worth a very long look.

Having driven a 1997 Mits Eclipse GSX (AWD, 210hp, Turbo) for 5 years, I was a little skeptical about jumping to a FWD, 200hp, 6-cyl car. At the suggestion of a friend, I took the GTI VR6 for a test drive and was pleasantly surprised by the cars performance and the total VW experience. It far surpassed my experience with Mits, Subaru, and Mini Cooper. After 5 months, I have few if any complaints and the car gets more and more fun to drive. Overall: Super fun drive, great interior and exterior and overall great package at a great value. My biggest complaint with my Mits GSX was its reliability and so far my GTI has been A+.

Forget about the Jap Crap. Get the GTI. Chip it and there is little that will beat you in that price range. Awesome car for the money. The dash colors rock.

  • Where To Start With the Problems - 2002 Volkswagen GTI

I would have to disagree about the reliablity of the GTI. The first day I got it, the airbag light was on. They said it was the sensor in the seatbelt buckle. This was service trip #1. Then my GTI died on me three times due to the terminal connecting to the battery, trip #2. Then my car started to overheat on two seperate occasions. The dealer said it was a burnt fuse box that was above the battery that caused my fan to not kick in (good place to put a fuse huh). Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that the moonroof sqeaks and the turbo lags. If you are ever to listen to a stranger in your life, listen to me. DONT BUY THIS CAR! You will spend more time getting to know your mechanic than enjoing a turbo car.

  • Incredible! 337 is the GTI done right. - 2002 Volkswagen GTI

Loads of torque. Not like the RSX. I am not fond of spending the majority of time at 6000 rpm just to have 75% of the torque availible in the GTI at 1900 rpm. The 337 behaves as if it is an extension of your thoughts when driving it quickly through twisty uneven pavement. It tracks with the accuracy of a roller coaster. Road noise is limited even with the 225 40 18s and lowered suspension. Two words sum up how the 337 feels, Billet Aluminum. I am now a believer in German engineering.
