Model Overview:

Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.

Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

  • You wont like the lugging - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

You know that feeling you get when driving a car/truck with a manual transmission and you shift too early. Thats what this truck does constantly. To try and maximize mpg, Toyota designed it to shift into a higher gear early which causes the rpms to drop to the low 1000s and results in that lugging/stuttering feeling. I have over 6000 miles on my truck now, this sole issue drives me crazy. It is something to be aware of during your test drive. You will notice it when maintaining speed only; not when accelerating. I notice it most when going 40-50mph. On my 5K scheduled maintenance, I told the service mechanic and they told me that is normal for all automatic tacomas. He said that he hears these complaints several times a week from owners. I will say that I love everything else about the truck. If they could fix this one problem, i would be so happy.

I traded in my BMW for this truck and what a difference. I know I cant compare apples to oranges but basic things that were lacking in a 2013 model really irritated me. For instance I drove from California to the NW and on the way encountered cold weather, the side mirrors would fog up and there werent any defrosters to clear this up. Also, the gas mileage was awful. This truck doesnt have a very strong engine. The standard sound system was ok but could be improved. The gearing on the manual transmission was very hard to shift. i guess it would be good as a hauling vehicle for short trips but other than that definitely not a daily commuter.

  • 06 Tacoma 4X4 - 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Second truck issued, first was replaced using the lemon law. Current truck has clutch and 4x4 disengagement problems. I wished Toyota would have kept the Tacoma as a smaller truck... this would have helped with the gas mileage. Im currently getting 21 hwy / 18 city.

  • full size compromize - 2005 Toyota Tacoma

I bought this truck expecting good fuel economy and rugged capabilities. It is a great truck for off roading, towing, and getting dirty and if you want to look tough on your commute to work. The truck has disappointing fuel economy i rarely if ever got above 17 mpg on the freeway. the ground clearance is high so if youre under 58" better get the steps or nerf tubes. the automatic was terrible, it always searched for a right gear and downshifted constantly with the cruise control on, even on level roads, and engine noise gets pretty loud.

  • Toyota reneges on Frame Recall - 1996 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Toyota Canada has denied any payout as the 15 yr program has ended. I had the truck in for the recall in April 2010 and now the truck is dangerous to drive and unsalable. Also my youngest daughter had been driving the truck to Toronto for school, which has obviously put her some peril with a faulty frame. I spoke with a Customer service rep named Steven ID# 5001, who told me that it has been decided and there is nothing that anyone can do. He would not give me a name or number of anyone above him to speak with regarding the decision. This is one of many Toyotax that I have owned and I am more than disappointed, I plan to sue!!

  • Tall drivers beware - 2010 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Am in the 2010 Tacoma for 2 weeks now and its clearly evident that for larger - especially taller - drivers this is a cramped truck. It appears that the truck will be able to carry out most of the tasks I need it to do but if you are over 6 tall I would recommend a full size truck. Perhaps it didnt help that I had a Dodge Quad Cab before but there is no storage for tools, etc. in the cab...no room period. Once you have adjusted the drivers seat there is no leg room in the rear so the double cab doors are for access and will not seat 4 adults.

  • Disappointed with my Taco - 2007 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Ill start by saying that Ive owned many Toyotas over the years and have been very satisfied with every one but this one. After 18k miles the engine began to knock loudly (piston wobble) and the tranny will kick after every stop (driveline lash). These traits all called "normal" by Toyota. These trucks do not represent the quality the brand has developed through the years. If you can live with a truck that makes a nasty knock at idle, shifts through the auto gearbox after a stop...only to thump you after finally finding first gear, chasing wheel balance due to the hub offset being whacked and always having steering wheel shimmy; this might be the truck for you.

  • Oh What A Not So Good Truck ! - 2000 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Like others I bought this truck with high anticipations based on that Toyota reputation. Over 7 services trips concerning my squeaky clutch, suspension, and faulty paint. The passenger seat is uncomfortable and even it squeaks. Im very disappointed. I love the body style and solid feel, but there isnt much else to brag about.

  • Cheap, cheap cheap - 2006 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

I bought this truck febuary of last year. One of the biggest mistakes I have ever made! I have only 23,000 miles on this truck, and as of now its in the shop being worked on once again. Two transmissions, one rear differential, Bed is cheap - you cant load anything on it, the tail gate can only hold 100 pounds! So many more things to list that make me regret buying this truck. I had a 96 tacoma 4wd and it has 160k. Ive never put anything into it, so I know its not driver error. If youre not considering buying an older tacoma forget this!!

  • Should Be Better - 2013 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

There are only a couple of choices for a mid-size pickup. The Tacoma is an average vehicle that could easily be much better. All Tacomas speedometers are off by 3 mph and all 4-cyl engines tick like toy engines. The 4-cyl engines are less than adequate for a useful pickup truck. The transmission has to downshift twice going up marginal grades at 65 mph. I want more mpg than the standard 1/2 Ton PU, but need enough power for adequate highway driving.
