Model Overview:

Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.

Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

  • Really Disappointed - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

I sold a 2006 Chevy Tahoe and leased a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe for a year just to wait for the 2016 Tacoma... BIG MISTAKE!!! My Tacoma has been in the shop 5 times over the last year for an electrical issue (interior lights fuse keeps popping) and now the radio resets a couple of times a week. It is in the shop now again... same problem. Toyota coroporate could not care less... they keep putting new fuses in and a few weeks later it happens again. Corporate sent me a letter back saying in essance - " There is no problem." Gilroy dealership is trying, but cant find the problem even with the help of the manufacturer (supposedly). My other complaints are like the others... transmission changes gears all of the time, gas mileage is not good and I have to duck to get in it and Im 510". The extererior is nice and I do like the controls. Im stuck with it for another year and a half... I hope the 2018 or 2019 is redesigned. If not, than I will NOT buy another Tacoma (sadly- because it is the truck I want). My loaner is a 2017 TRD Tacoma-- no changes from 2016... DISAPPOINTING!!!

  • Owned many Toyotas but this is my last! - 2010 Toyota Tacoma

I decided to lease my Toyota and had all kinds of trouble with the dealer. It took 4 months to get plates, they messed up paper work and had to redo. They did not notify me of this. So its not been good. So now for the truck, its a DOG plain and simple. The 4 Cylinder engine has 30 less HP then my wifes RAV 4 which has a smaller 4 Cyl? The 4 speed trans is awful and when its in overdrive which happens way too soon I get a vibration because the RPMs are so low and the engine lugs. Who ever mated this engine with the transmission and programed it does not drive it! I have had trouble with a whine from the trans too but have not been to a dealer yet.

  • Toyota Never Again - 2009 Toyota Tacoma

I am very disappointed with the Tacoma. So far the engine sounds like a diesel engine, its burns oil when first started and the stereo has a mind of its own (on, off, on, off volume up and down by itself). Toyota factory rep. says everything is normal. Its safe to say that I will never acquire another Toyota again. Back to my Jeeps.

  • Not for me - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

Ill make it short and sweet toyota made a big mistake by changing to the 3.5 liter engine. This new version is so underpowered. It made my decision for a new truck easy. Ill check by with toyota in a few years to see if they have fixed the problems. Also the GoPro camera mount built in is absolutely stupid. Technology changes over time but that mount on your windshield doesnt. Same situation for the built in phone charger. Epic failure in the part of toyota on this one.

  • Poor Quality Toyota Tacoma - 2007 Toyota Tacoma

I have the truck for about 1500 miles. It has following problems: 1.) poor alignment: I have to re-align front wheels to drive straight. 2.) power steel failed with fluid leaked out. It has to be serviced and part changed. 3). rattle noise from right side of cab. It has not being fixed after two trips to dealership.

Ive had my Tacoma for over a year. Very reliable, low maintenance truck. Plenty of torque and nice off-road features - especially the electronically locking rear dif. (TRD Package) Several warranty items covered without question from the dealer.

    Has a tow package.

  • Cheap quality but fun - 2005 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Bought used with 50,000 and now my transmission went out, clutch, shocks, and the grill flew off on the free way. Its still a blast to drive and I like the styling and the size with a six speed manual. It needs more horse power and insulation. Bumpy all most drove off the free way twice.

  • HORRIBLE DRIVETRAIN - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

The 2016 Tacoma with the v6 is horrible when using cruise control. When traveling 75mph or higher with cruise control on transmission does not want to shift out of 4th gear most of the time which results in poor fuel economy. It will shift into 5th sometimes but usually stays in 4th gear. I drove from Omaha, ne. to Denver Co. mostly in 4th gear because it would not shift into a higher gear, I got a whopping 14.6 miles to the gallon. I cant believe I traded my 2015 Tacoma for a 2016 Tacoma. I was told by a Toyota Service Mgr. that this truck needs a turbo charger because it lacks so much power. I have called Toyota Corp. I have had the truck in twice once in Denver and once in Omaha and was told this is how the truck is suppose to run. I called Toyota Corp. They were no help what so ever. Toyota knows this drivetrain is terrible but will not do anything about it.

  • Front Mud Flap - 2007 Toyota Tacoma

While driving at speed of just 70 MPH both my mud flaps tore, broke and very expensive to replace.
