The 2002 Toyota Prius is without a doubt the best car I have owned in terms of quality and reliablity. In the 18 months I have owned the car I have not had even one problem; only returning to the dealer for oil changes and scheduled maintenance. The car is very quite and comfortable even for long trips (Austin to Los Angeles, Austin to Mexico City for example).

Toyota has produced an excellent vehicle with exceptional gas mileage! With an EPA city mileage rating of 52 MPG and highway 45 MPG, and a "Super Ultra Low Emissions" (SULV) Toyota has hit a home run. To me it is an attractive, comfortable, and practical car with good acceleration and performance. I was expecting compromises with the purchase of a hybrid vehicle, but there are very few!

The only negative about this car is: the back seats dont fold down. This car is one of the best purchases I have ever made. High mileage, clean, quiet, technologically sophisticated, comfortable throughout: a well- integrated whole. I wouldnt take it to the drag strip, but acceleration (due to the CVT) is smooth, consistent and perfectly adequate for any driving I need to do. My operating costs have dropped by 30% from those of my 1987 Saturn SL2 (imagine the difference if you have an SUV now!). I recommend it highly.

  • Prius replaced Ford Ranger - 2002 Toyota Prius

slight instability at high speeds. Noticed that it accelerated much better than my Ford Ranger. Extremely quite car. Interior misdesigned piece center arm rest is too low. Gear shift hides some controls. Snow driving was fine being front wheel drive. Used tire chains and still achieved about 40 mpg while chains on car. Plenty of power - CVT is unique in that there is no shifting . It is actually nice though in that as soon as you let off the gas, then engine goes away)..

Comfortable, fun to drive, economical and quality, quality, quality. Just read reviews of the Jetta and/or Passat I ALMOST bought. Nice to have made the right choice. Excellent dealer service and attitude as well. Comfortable on long trips up the California coast. No street racer but does not claim to be.

Bought it new in June 2003. Im amazed the car it still gives me 42-46 mpg each fill up in mixed city/highway driving in busy Miami traffic. This has been the most reliable car I have owned in 40 years of driving. Repairs so far: full brake job at 100,000 miles, replaced replaced rear wheel bearings at 155,000 miles, replaced ABS brake module and engine belt at 165,000 miles, replaced steering rack at 175,000 miles, added refrigerant gas to AC at 190,000 miles for the 1st time. As a preventive measure I also replace the small 12V battery every 3 years. The car is still running fine on the original high voltage battery. Everything thing else is original. I love it!

  • Great little car! - 2002 Toyota Prius

Weve only put a few thousand miles on it, but its been a lot of highway miles. Its very comfortable. I think Toyota could have boosted the quality of the seats, but its still comfortable. My main "gripe" is the center arm rest. I drove the car for about a month and then ordered the extension from Coastal Technology. I was concerned about muddy roads as we have a pretty good stretch to drive on them when it rains. Front wheel drive handles it like a charm! Were getting a constant 46 - 47 miles to the gallon. We drive 35 miles each way to work, plus around town driving. The mileage seems to get better as its broken in. Sooooo much better than the Jeep Grand Cherokee!

I have been very pleased with the performance and value of my Prius. Ive averaged 40 mpg driving only in the city, which is less than the estimate, but I expected that. Ive been especially pleased with the way it handled in the snow. And its sooooo quiet!

We now have 9000 miles on our Prius, and every time we get in it my wife and I still look at each other and say out loud, "I love this car!" Incredible build quality and zero problems after one year of ownership. Legendary "stealth mode"...still have fun freaking people out (usually bikers or joggers) by cruising by silently. Only one minor complaint...gas mileage really suffers in our cold winters. Sometimes the engine will turn on just to produce heat for the passenger compartment!
