Overview & Reviews
There are no major changes to this year's Toyota wagon, although new SAE testing procedures have resulted in lower horsepower ratings.
- Versatile cargo area, roomy rear seats, good gas mileage, generous standard equipment list, availability of all-wheel drive and stability control.
- Modest torque output, less fun to drive than its styling suggests.

The Matrix - 2006 Toyota Matrix
By Chantel - March 12 - 5:06 amI absolutely love this car! Its my 3rd car, 2nd toyota. Reliability is awesome, gas mileage is as good as can be expected, low on inner city stop/go, great hwy. Its comfortable, great radius and handling on curves/bad weather. So much room-left the east coast for the west and all I took was my car and the stuff I fit inside-it was great! Also a great outdoors car-who needs a tent, when the seat recline w/so much room. I feel like a commercial, but I love it and everyone who drives it also loves it in the end, even if theyre skeptical at first. You get the space, without giving up the sport. I cannot find any major faults-boo to those who find superficial gripes.

My Toyota - 2006 Toyota Matrix
By D. Riddle - February 11 - 4:13 pmI had started out looking for a more fuel efficient SUV. I had never even heard of the Toyota Matrix. Went to the dealership to look at a Rav4. I found that the Matrix had more cargo space than the 2005 Rav4 I was looking at ... and was a more comfortable driving experience than the 2006 Rav4 that I was looking at. I am totally enjoying zipping around in this car. It feels solid and tight. More so than my old SUV. It sits higher than a sedan. I found a surprising fuel efficient option. Love it.

Good performance for the price - 2006 Toyota Matrix
By Bob - February 7 - 11:50 amI downsized to this car from a van. This car has ample room, plenty of zip, and handles well on the road. This car was a excellent surprise to me.

Needs some improvements! - 2006 Toyota Matrix
By goat herder - January 31 - 12:23 pmHandling in any slightly icy or wet weather is very poor. Gear shifts are poor with the tachometer spiking up and down as automatic shifts into gears. No room in tire hold for a real tire. I prefer not to use the donut. When I was removing a package from the passenger side, a handle flipped over the gear shift and the car jumped into reverse! (Ignition was still on but had been in park.) Fueel economy is nowhere near the sticker. Best I have gotten (100 per day highway driving) is 26 mpg. Whenever the weather is cold or wet, fuel economy drops and the "sticking" problem with the gears increases. At times it feels like I have to push the car to get it to move.

Great car - 2006 Toyota Matrix
By frst toyota - January 19 - 4:50 pmThis is my first Toyota, but it wont be my last. This is a fun little car that is nimble and fun to drive. The AWD is a must here in the mountains and this car gets great mileage also. There is good visibility from the drivers seat and good take-off from the little four. The a/c works well enough to keep everyone cool. We love this little wagon.

Get One Before Theyre Gone - 2006 Toyota Matrix
By Paradoxfalls - December 31 - 12:36 amI love the 2006 Toyota Matrix. Its a well-built, peppy, fuel economic car thats fun to drive. The only problem we have with it is that the small rear windows (hatch and behind the doors) create bigger blind spots, but once you get to know the car, its not so bad. My husband and I bought this car after our 2005 Matrix was totaled. A speeding drunk driver jumped a sloped median, landing his Jeep Cherokee V8 on the hood of our Matrix, then flipped over and crushed part of our roof. My husband and I were injured, but WE WALKED AWAY, vowing to buy another Matrix since that one saved our lives. I heard that the Matrix may be replaced in Toyotas line-up, so get one while you can!

A roomy car with a good ride - 2006 Toyota Matrix
By Charlie - December 28 - 4:20 amThe car is very roomy, has a good ride, good pickup, but the engine groans when shifting into higher gears.

Could be better. - 2006 Toyota Matrix
By CJ - December 20 - 6:20 amHad a 93 Corolla. Decided to buy a Matrix based on experience w/ Toyota. This is a typical Toyota, very well built, drives fine. Driver legroom is not good, Im 6-0. Right leg has very little room between the dash and center console. Drivers seat is very uncomfortable. I seem to fall to the right side in it. Hope it just needs breaking in but fear otherwise. Odometer/trip meter cycles with small button behind wheel that you cant push while driving. Cant see both trip/odo @ same time. I like to always see the odo. Air controls badly placed behind shifter. Cargo cover chintzy. Forced to buy cargo pad as none standard, cargo will shift w/out one. Based on legroom & seat comfort may not keep car very long.

Love my Matrix - 2006 Toyota Matrix
By wayne kaczowski - June 28 - 4:43 pmI previously had a 2005 Matrix. The dealership enticed me to stop by and consider a trade in. And I did. My first Matrix XR was the dark shadow grey. Now I have the dark blue which is really beautiful. I recommend the Matrix to anyone who wants a roomy car both in the front and rear seating areas. Lots of head room and leg room. I am 6 feet tall and these were 2 important factors. Plus I get an average of 30 MPG.
