I traded in a 2000 Solara (with poor access to trunk storage) for my very quick, extremely nimble, front wheel drive 2004 Matrix. I get 30-36MPG with it (5 speed manual), its a real kick to drive, it maneuvers well, is fabulous in winter weather, and -- fully loaded including side air bags -- was less than $20,000. Great car! I love it!

We have a Ford King Ranch pickup and love it, but needed a second vehicle for Church activities. We purchased the Matrix, and so far, we really like it. It looks, drives and rides good. All our friends like it also. For a smaller car than we are used to, it does the job well.

Love my matrix, had a driving vacation in sept, and went from NJ to Boston, Marthas Vineyard, and New Hampshire, handled well, and held a lot of gear. Pleasure to drive to work, and handled great in the snowstorms that we have had already.

I drove a jeep Cherokee for 6 years. Compared to it, this vehicle is a dream. No effort is required to drive my Matrix. We have had a fairly deep snow (12"). It drove like a dream. The Cherokee would slip, this did not 1 time. The gas mileage difference is phenonemal. I can haul as much as I could in my Jeep and the seats are much easier to operate. GO TOYOTA. I LOVE IT!

  • Great Family Wagon - 2004 Toyota Matrix

After exhaustive research and numerous test drives of the competetion I finally bought a Matrix Xr. It is the best in its class beating the PT and Mazda P5 Hands down on comfort and ride. P5 was VERY loud and I felt EVERY bump in the road. I drove over a railroad crosing and I felt like I was in a soapbox derby car. PT felt cheap and was hard to see out of. Matrix is the right mix of a sporty car and family wagon. I think all car editors that do reviews tend to forget that not everyone NEEDS a car that can do 0-60 in 5.0 sec and take a corner at 65mph.. Who cares?!! Just give me an inexpensive, reliable and fun car to drive. Matrix fits that bill.

  • 208,000, and still love it! - 2004 Toyota Matrix

My goal is to make it past 300000 miles on this car. I bought it with 144k, and was told by the owner that he had the transmission rebuilt at 100k by Aamco (though they sometimes may stretch the truth with a vehicles true repair needs). They said the Main drive bearing went out. I put in a new Catalytic converter around 145k, and ive been golden since then until now. Its time for more work on the tranny, but some are telling me its the clutch throw-out bearing (release bearing) and some tell me its the same issue that this car had at 100k. Regardless, I have loved the car and wouldnt hesitate on getting another. As for now, Ill fix it and go another 100k, Lord willing!

I needed a hatchback or a wagon for my mobile lifestyle. The Matrixs fuel economy and Toyota reliability drew me to it initially, and I am astonished at the fuel economy in my first 2 weeks of ownership. I have put 600 miles on it and am approaching 38-40 MPG in mostly highway driving. Its a quiet ride, with responsive handling and perky pickup. Its simple to load and unload, and transports folks with mobility problems easily.

The matrix xrs is a very interesting car/wagon. It looks small, but the inside is comfortable with 5 adults. It has a small wagon/suv stance but it handles as good as a $30000 sports car, its extremely tight and nimble. The engine has a lot of pep, especially at high rpms, it is rock solid at 120mph (trust me)and it gets 25+mpg around town. The 17inch wheels and 6 disc cd changer will cost you $300, thats cheap and worth it. It would be nice to have 30hp more and 30lbs of torque but thats were the afterparts market kicks in. Just think of the Matrix as a Celica GTS with a biggger trunk.

  • I love my car! - 2004 Toyota Matrix

The second I laid eyes on this car I knew it was going to be the one. It was one of only two cars I test drove; I needed to look no further. Manual transmission won out in the end. It offers a better feel of control as well as power. I get nothing but positive feedback and compliments on my car. Everyone I know really likes it. I love it!
