This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota's midsize SUV is fully redesigned for 2008. Significantly larger than the original, the 2008 Highlander features a standard V6 engine and a habitable third-row seat.

Pros:
  • Powerful and fuel-efficient V6, easy to maneuver for its size, user-friendly cabin design with reconfigurable second-row seats and a fully usable third row.
Cons:
  • Third-row seat folds as a single unit rather than in 50/50 sections.

  • Never again! - 2008 Toyota Highlander

I owned highlander 2005 3.3 and loved it, power, economy, comfort, and reliability were 5 stars paid 26k for brand new. In 2008 new model looked really nice and I thought its time for an upgrade, wrong I was. Turned out to be down grade all around except the looks. 30k for a sport model with lots of features but economy is down the drain, comfort is down the drain, and reliability as well down the drain. Focus of maker was to make a cool looking suv with lots of features.

  • Great Car Fuel Economy a problem - 2008 Toyota Highlander

I purchased a 2008 2wd Limited in Atlanta in November 2008. Its a great car, interior well thought out with the right touches in all the right places. Ride is nice if not sporty. My only complaint is the following. My gas mileage for city driving is consistently around 15.5 to 16 significantly below the 18 Toyota promises. I use Costco gas, dont put much in the car, have tried to not acclerate very fast but this problem continues to persist. This mileage issue is a real disappointment.

I love this car. I am coming from a half ton pick up so of course the fuel mileage is way better!! I love how it handles and the storage under the cargo area. I enjoy how the car handles and is another great product from Toyota!!

  • Could be better - 2008 Toyota Highlander

Just bought the 2WD Limited edition. Took it for a test drive before buying but I didnt notice the poorly designed inside door handles. It seems when you try and use the electric window switches the handle gets in the way. Try it youll see what I mean. I have a 2003 Highlander and it rides better then this 2008. This 2008 rides more like a truck with the 19" wheels. All in all I think its one of the best out there. They just have to twik it a bit. Also, its bigger than my 2003 which I think I like, Ill have to get use to it.

  • tires and oil line - 2008 Toyota Highlander
    By -

the tires on the sport model are horrible. Look at tire rack review. The are a accident waiting to happen. Why put out a awd with poor tires. Only two mfg makes them. There is a oil line to the valve train area that is accident waiting to happen after 45K miles.Look up toyota oil leaks. Blue tooth operation is horrible. You must program phone #s into the car system

  • 2008 first impression - 2008 Toyota Highlander

What a change from my 05. Lots more leg room, gas mileage seems about the same, and POWER - the new v6 is awesome. Very smooth and quiet ride compared to old model. Steering is very light but a little slower - not the same feel as the 05. It is a bigger, taller auto but not as large as it looks.

Toyo tires are horrible! stopping in snow/ice is nearly impossible. the steering is a little hard to get use to while trying to stay straight on highway. it has plenty of power and smooth shifting. too many rattles in the dashboard that is driving me crazy, gets worse in the winter

  • 2008 HIGHLANDER AWD V6 - 2008 Toyota Highlander

I agree as to the above comments regarding the tires. Toyota should be ashamed to place such cheap dunlop tires. I have replaced them after 30k with Michellin cross terrain , huge improvement in handling. The truck sticks to the road like crazy glue. Also , the sqeak from the dashboard is getting on my nerves. Other then that love the vehicle. It is very family oriented , the 3rd raw came in handy. (optional) So far 45k.

  • Meets My Needs Very Well - 2008 Toyota Highlander

08 Limited 4WD W/Leather. I like this car a lot for what we needed it for which is daily commuting, safety, winter driving and vacation trips. We will pull a POP for camping (when Toyota/or after market design a tow bar). It replaced 02 Odyssey. I am averaging 20 MPG with mixed driving on 5 tanks, so this should improve.

  • Very Good, But Not Great, SUV - 2008 Toyota Highlander
    By -

I bought an 08 Highlander Sport with AWD in August of 07. Its a weekend car for me, so it has just 2500 miles on it. So far, its been a very good vehicle, solidly built and reliable, just like every Toyota Ive owned previously. But I have a few little complaints. First, the acceleration is not what Id expect from a 270-hp engine, even given the vehicles weight. Second, the transmission makes me crazy. From a rolling start, the transmission doesnt upshift quickly enough from first to second, resulting in an awkward "pull." Third, the "low tire pressure" warning light is much too sensitive, going on when the tires are just a pound or two low on air pressure.
