This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota's midsize SUV is fully redesigned for 2008. Significantly larger than the original, the 2008 Highlander features a standard V6 engine and a habitable third-row seat.

Pros:
  • Powerful and fuel-efficient V6, easy to maneuver for its size, user-friendly cabin design with reconfigurable second-row seats and a fully usable third row.
Cons:
  • Third-row seat folds as a single unit rather than in 50/50 sections.

  • 93k and counting - 2008 Toyota Highlander
    By -

Bought my HL base V6 AWD model w/36k miles and now have 93k. Has proven very reliable and well built. Had the oil-line replaced under one of Toyotas TSBs and also the power window switch replaced as a result of a recall. For the size of the vehicle the mileage is outstanding and I get around 23-25 based on which highway I am driving (55 or 65 mph). I drive for a living (sales) so this is my work car and I have owned lots of different cars over the years. Utility, size, mpg are hard to beat. One thing that should bear consideration is driver height. I am 63 and have found that the seat length isnt long enough for us big guys...nissan/infiniti, honda/acura make better seats.

  • Good SUV, Bad Tires - 2008 Toyota Highlander
    By -

Love the car itself. Have 22K miles on it so far. Toyo A20 245/55R19 tires are nearing the end. Dealers in town know these tires are fast wearing but only want to sell the same or the equally bad Bridgestone Dueler HL. Toyota still putting A20 on 2010 models. Local dealer said I can change size but it may throw off performance. I see posts of near accidents related to tires on this site. Otherwise car handles quite nicely with VSC option and has lots of room and zoom (V6).

  • Love the Highlander - 2008 Toyota Highlander

I love my 2008 Toyota Highlander. Yes, there are some issues in the snow with sliding, but this issue is not the vehicle, but rather the tires available for the Limited models 19 inch wheels. Only 2 manufacturers make good tires for this vehicle, and with a lower profile tire, you wont have the traction you would have from a 17 inch or smaller wheel. The ride and gas mileage (23mpg avg.) are great. Some rattling noises from the dashboard in the cold when hitting bumps. Overall Im very pleased with this vehicle. I would recommend buying this vehicle if you want a well equipped, dependable, reliable, quality suv without the large price tag. Toyota has succeeded again.

  • Just purchased - 2008 Toyota Highlander

Just purchased 08 HLtd with all the toys. Drove the only one they had on the lot and bought one being delivered in two days. Drove Mazda CX-9, Murano SL, Dodge Nitro R/T (my wifes choices as this is her vehicle). She picked Salso Red with Nav, DVD and everything but remote start. She loves the HL over the Murano and the Mazdas front head rest would not adjust and hurt her neck. The outside front and back looked great to her, the side view is very bland. The inside set-up and handling sold her. Shes going from a Chevy Avalanche to the cross-over Toyoto. I hope she loves it for the next 4 years.

  • I like my new Highlander 2008 - 2008 Toyota Highlander

I got this on 20th Aug 2007 and I like it. I enjoyed the power, interior, steering controls and audio system with subwoofer. I have one problem, my GPS system doesn’t work if I fix it right in the center of the front windshield, but works well if I fix it on the right or left ends of windshield. Dont know why!!

  • Tires, Brakes, Oxygen Sensor Issues - 2008 Toyota Highlander
    By -

Tires were shot at 30,000 miles. Odd size makes replacement expensive. Rear brake pads shot at 30,000 miles (grinding heard on LR rotor). Lots of life left on the front pads, so whats up with that? Biggest disappointment was at 30,000 miles and 3.5 years both oxygen sensors on right exhaust went out at the same time. Bank 1 Sensor 1 and Bank 1 Sensor 2 to be exact. $700 repair. I like the car but the reliability is coming into question for us.

  • Good, but choose Sprt/Lim for goodies - 2008 Toyota Highlander

Great everything in this vehicle. I wish we had gotten the sports or the limited, because they have the power-lift gate, rear view camera, fog lights, DVD system and power folding mirrors (on sport this is optional). Were looking into adding the some of these features now. But overall were happy with the purchase. Feels like a solid vehicle.

  • Lurch Mobile 2 - 2008 Toyota Highlander

I really liked this car until I had to drive it for longer than one month. There is something really wrong with the AWD transmission on these cars. It hesitates about 5 seconds when you need it to accelerate, stopped on a hill, gave a loud "clump" then went up hill. Transmission cannot keep up with computer is my thinking. Toyota will not admit any problems, been to shop twice. Car lurches while trying (slowly) to change gears, can be dangerous while trying to enter a freeway, hope no one gets killed due to this problem. Also, knobs, rubber is falling off, radio bad. Do not Buy!!!

  • Nice, but not the Sequoia - 2008 Toyota Highlander
    By -

Traded a 2002 Sequoia for the Highlander for financial reasons (gas mileage, etc.). I like it, but wish I had gotten the Sport or Limited (none in stock at the time). The base model features are VERY limited in comparison to what I am used to. No exterior temperature guage or interior computer for gas mileage, no power seats, no standard roof racks, no mud flaps, etc. I am dissapointed in the lack of standard features, especially the lack of power driver seat. On the other hand it has more than enough power and drives great.

  • Best Highlander So Far - 2008 Toyota Highlander
    By -

Traded a 2004 Highlander Limited. New one is larger, has more power and is quieter, but gets around the same gas mileage so far, which should improve after break-in and start using Mobil 1. More room for 3rd row passengers. Some nice added features from previous models, like the 19" wheels, fully adjustable steering wheel and automatic rear passenger AC.
