This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota's midsize SUV is fully redesigned for 2008. Significantly larger than the original, the 2008 Highlander features a standard V6 engine and a habitable third-row seat.

Pros:
  • Powerful and fuel-efficient V6, easy to maneuver for its size, user-friendly cabin design with reconfigurable second-row seats and a fully usable third row.
Cons:
  • Third-row seat folds as a single unit rather than in 50/50 sections.

  • Big Mistake - 2008 Toyota Highlander

I have had my Highlander for about 2 weeks now and I can honestly say that I would never have leased this car if I had driven it for more than a few minutes. The steering wheel makes a clicking noise and I feel a click when I turn it. The third row has giant headrests that block your view out the back window. This is really not a 7 passenger vehicle unless the person sitting in the middle seat is tiny (and then they should probably be in a carseat!) I dislike driving the Highlander soooo much and dont know how I will keep it for the next 38 1/2 months. Was trying to save some $$ and didnt save very much and got a car that I hate. I keep hoping it will grow on me, but then I drive it!

  • Comfy, but lacks refinement - 2008 Toyota Highlander

Overall its a comfortable vehicle with lots of leg room in the rear. However, using it for travel to cycling events has shown major problems. With a hitch rack on the back and gear inside, the rear end squats and the front raises up. This causes the front to wander dangerously, especially in the rain. The tire wear problem is well known and at 35k miles, expect to replace them. There have been numerous rattles in the doors and currently the rear seat vibrates loudly even at low speeds. The FWD just has poor traction and easily spins its wheels at the stop light.

  • Happy with 2nd Highlander & recommend - 2008 Toyota Highlander

I traded my 2005 Highlander for a Classic Silver Metallic 2008. Love the new looks! Very happy with the improved braking, steering and overall power. Love the convenience of opening the rear hatch window. The ride and suspension are not quite as smoothe as my 2005 Limited was, but this is a sport suspension and the car now has 19 inch tires and larger base. The new Limited felt about the same to me, so I went with the sporty look and happy with it. I love the layout of the new controls, large and easy to find everything. I miss the armrest. Even the door side is too low to rest an arm on - I am 55". Rear backup screen & the sensors I added are nice to have. Overall, thumbs up!

Excellent fit and finish. Ride is comfortable, powerful quiet engine. Interior controls easy to reach and well laid out. Only options we chose were a power lift gate, JBL stereo system, and running boards. Mileage has averaged 17 city and 27 highway since we purchased it. Toyo OEM tires showed wear bars at 17,000. Replaced with 19" Hankook 80,000 mile tires and have had no problems.

  • The best of the best - 2008 Toyota Highlander

Excellent vehicle all around. I have the sport model and love the looks of it, and it handles great. Toyota has really outdone themselves w/the highlander. The only negative things I have to say about it is that I dont care for the headlights when switched to brights but dims work great and head rests are just a little to far forward.

This was my first new car purchase ever and my wife and I couldnt be happier. We thought we would have buyers remorse after shelling out ~$40k for a Toyota, but it was well worth it. The car drives wonderfully, has a great exterior, incredible handling and features, and I feel like I purchased a Lexus. All of the features and upgrades are worth it. And I love the push button start and JBL stereo.

  • Exceeds my expectations!! - 2008 Toyota Highlander

The new Highlander is a must see/must drive vehicle if you are in the market for a new SUV. While a crossover by design, it can still tow 5,000 lbs. Yet rides and handles as well as a car. Its a super quiet vehicle and leans to the luxury side of the market. Feels like youre driving a Lexus. More gadgetry than you can learn in a week. Ive had it a week now and am still learning. I think the gas mileage is good considering its an SUV. I get as good as my old 1996 Isuzu Oasis which was a 4 cyl. and there is no comparison as to power. This thing really moves! Quality materials and build. This vehicle is a real winner for Toyota!

  • nice car, but dash sqeaks and rattles drive me nuts! - 2008 Toyota Highlander
    By -

Our first Toyota, bought used Nov 2010, bought base model because of tire issues on sport and ltd, and cost. Went from 1997 Plymouth Voyager van to this - what a difference in driving. It scared me for awhile, getting used to the electronic/computer driving process, seemed out of control to me until I got used to it, now its fine. What drives me crazy is the dash rattles, which is way worse in winter. My old van didnt rattle like this! It makes me want to sell it, and buy another, but afraid of same problem. Radio is ok, bass is terrible. Roomy inside. Seats ok, but not that comfortable on day long drives. Back seat rattles now. What next?

  • Great Car! - 2008 Toyota Highlander

I LOVE this car! We researched new cars for about 5 months before deciding on this one. The interior has more room than the 4runner and yet still has bigger tires and gets better gas mileage. Plus, the third row is standard and folds flat, the 4runner isnt a standard 7-passenger and the seats dont fold flat. The layout of the interior is superior to the pilot and every other car we had test riden. It just by far is the best reliable car that can be sporty, but yet still fit the whole family in. We are a family of 5, and fit very comfortably. I just love driving it!

  • Better than expected - 2008 Toyota Highlander

Traded in 00 Sienna 130k mile, Comfortable ride handles great in the rain. Car grows on you the more you drive it. 3rd row is great for the kids. I wish they had split the sitting. 2nd row is spacious for adults. Cargo Mat and privacy screen are troublesome to put away with last minute seating.
