This Year's Model Updates:

The 2004 GTO is an all-new rear-wheel-drive performance car from Pontiac. Although it is new to the U.S. market, it is based on a car sold by GM's Australian subsidiary, Holden, under the Monaro nameplate.

Pros:
  • Powerful V8, rear-wheel drive, predictable handling from fully independent suspension, loaded with standard features.
Cons:
  • Forgettable styling, numerous standard features make it an expensive proposition.

I am very impressed with the performance, build quality and ride. This is a BIG automobile with a real (comfortable) back seat. A true 2+2 sports coupe. I choose the six speed version to avoid the "gas guzzler" tax and because I prefer a standard transmission. The design is clean and contrary to most opinions, I like it! The color, Torrid red, really pops! GM also offered $3500 cash back with 2.9% financing for five years. Altogether, I was able to reduce the price to $25,200.00 from $33,179.00. What a deal, world class performance for the price of a family car!

I purchased my 2004 GTO in November 2004. I have 2600 miles on the car and to date have had no problems with it mechanically. I do have a few concerns in the fact that the drivers and passengers windows do not defrost when there is inclement weather. Also the fact that you have to shift the 6 speed manual transmission from 1st to 4th (CAGS) under certain conditions is a pain in the neck! There is a bypass kit to eliminate this feature so I will probably install one soon. Also the fuel economy isnt close to what is stated on the window sticker. I thought that the power would be better but with a heavy car I guess its not too bad. In general I like the car very much and for the pricing it is great.

Patience paid off as I waited to buy until GM finally offered incentives. Car is comfortable enough for my daily commute, yet still has the power available when I want / need it. The only drawback to this point has been dealing with every 18 year old kid in a Mustang wanting to race at stop lights - Im 32 and the tickets (and danger to other drivers) stopped being worth it long ago - although I have to admit Ive had it up around 120 on open roadways and it purred along at about 3,000 rpm - plenty left if it werent for the electronic governor! Ive owned lots of vehicles and this is the first one Ive had thats still a joy to drive every day six months later.

Either you "get" the last generation GTO or you dont. Those who "get it" almost feel like theyre in a club - theres that occasional eye contact from other GTO drivers that says "theres someone else who understands". The GTO is all about "stealth" - especially the 2004. Looks like any other car on the road (especially to police) while more capable than anything even remotely close to its price. Ive wanted this car for 20+ years - Im glad GM had the guts to build it. This is a BMW "6 series" for the masses.

  • GTO = FUN ! - 2004 Pontiac GTO

Great FUN Car! I Love It, everytime I drive it I get a big smile on my face. Very well built, really close to a BMW in quality and performance at one half the price. Makes a wonderful Modern Muscle Car, that why I want a 2006 - 50 more ponies means that smile will be just that much bigger!

  • Love this car - 2004 Pontiac GTO

So I just came home with a Yellow 04 GTO and I am loving everything about this car. It has the power of an american muscle car but not the crappy quality of the majority of american cars today since its built in Austrailia. It really does have the build quality like a european car but the raw power of an american bad boy car! Yes some may say the styling is bland but I personally get looks and people trying to talk to me about the car all the time. My girlfriend gets annoyed when we pull up to a light and another guy is trying to yell at us through the window to talk about the car. At first I wasnt totally sure about the yellow color choice but its grown on me and I wouldnt change a thing!

Just bought an 04 Goat and I loved it...for 2 days. Back to the dealership and now I am waiting for parts to be imported from Australia to overhaul the manual transmisson. Reverse stopped working. Why are these parts not on hand??? For 2 days, this was my dream car. I cant wait to get it back but Im afraid I may have a lemon. Pontiacs are not exactly known for having the best transmissions out there.

This car has 1960s Muscle car performance with all the modern comforts. My last GTO was a 1970 and the 04 GTO puts it to shame in just about every way except for looks. The new GTO is reliable, fast, gets good milage (for a performance car) and is very comfortable. I drive this car all through the Michigan winter (traction control and all season tires make this possible with RWD). My zero down 24k 2yr lease is $300/month. A lot of car for the money.

Im not crazy about the looks, for sure. It has plenty of performance but not much better then my 66 442. I think Pontiac ruined their resale value when they were selling them for $26,000.

Great "grand touring" car for the money. Plain styling, but the overall performance and built quality (not your typical GM car) make up for this.
