Overview & Reviews
Nissan's popular Xterra SUV receives a variety of updates for the 2002 model year. Front-end styling is updated, and the bulged hood hides a newly optional supercharged V6. Inside, there are revised gauges, seat fabrics, climate controls, two additional power points and a bigger glovebox. Also standard are dual-stage front airbags, rear child-seat anchors, variable intermittent front windshield wipers, a rear window wiper and a foot-operated parking brake. In terms of options, a new in-dash six-disc CD changer is available on XE Xterras and standard on SE models. Nissan has also made the sunroof optional instead of standard. Finally, as a tribute to dedicated Xterra owners, an Enthusiast Package is available only on XE V6 four-wheel-drive models. It includes ceiling tie clamps, a first aid kit, a tilt steering wheel, foglights, front tow hooks, map lights, a limited-slip differential, manually locking hubs and rubber floor mats.
- Rugged looks and the off-road capability to match, lots of room inside.
- Uncomfortable front seats, poor on-road ride and steering, four-cylinder and normally aspirated V6 lack power.

Love my Xterra - 2002 Nissan Xterra
By -D - December 30 - 5:26 amBought it used 2 years ago w 65k, I am the 3rd owner. Now has 98k, runs very strong. A few maintenance issues that was no big deal= air conditioner recharge due to leaky hose (common on these), a full brake job, new radiator (not expected) and I fouled a plug due to running cheap gas (must use premium at ALL times with the supercharger) so that was my fault. All of these issues in my book are normal wear except the radiator. Bottom line; drives anywhere and runs over anything with no problem. First car I have owned that I can say that I drive it any way I want and it just runs no problem. With the 4x4s get a good set of all terrains and will go through anything. Mud, snow, no problem.

Why I love Nissans--Xterra is Tops! - 2002 Nissan Xterra
By Lee English - December 5 - 10:00 amXterra is AWESOME. I love the power, the styling--everything. I even get good gas mileage. I averaged 330/mpg in my Maxima; now Im at 300. I LOVE the turning radius, the extra space, dual cupholders and the multiple outlets. Sunroof could be better and I dont like the two non-knobs next to the power outlet above the radio. My sometimes only regret is that I didnt get the SC, but there were none in my color choice when I went to purchase.

Xterra is the best value for the $$ - 2002 Nissan Xterra
By Mike fro m Wisconsin - July 30 - 10:00 amWe have had this truck for about a month now and it is awesome! I love the looks although I liked the square headlights on the older models better. It is very comfortable to drive, the turning radias is outstanding compared to my previous vehicle (Dodge Dakota). I wish I had gotten the supercharged engine now after driving it about 2500 miles. Storage is an issue. There are not many cubby holes to put things.

really a blast! - 2002 Nissan Xterra
By BobX - April 24 - 10:00 amI imagine that some of these negative reviews think like my brother, who thinks his Blazer is the greatest (e.g., softer seats), though I dont think it would make it in one piece through some places weve been. The Xterra gives us about everything we were looking for - ruggedness and handling as well as comfort. We just did a trip through eastern Oregon (1,000 miles total, and about 100 off- road) - it ran great, handled great, and my back end was still feeling fine when we got home. I dont know what more I could ask for, other than the things mentioned for potential improvements. It really has been a blast to drive, though!

My X! - 2002 Nissan Xterra
By mangeli - January 29 - 10:00 amWow, talk about an all around well built truck. The Xterra takes the cake. Test drove and SE and I went home with an XE with the powerpack option on it. I love it. Gets average MPG, but other than that its the best thing I have ever owned!

The Intimidator/XTERRA - 2002 Nissan Xterra
By Eddie C. - January 6 - 10:00 amThis is my second XTERRA and by far the best vehicle I have owned. I bought the XTERRA because it reminded me of the Nissan Patrol I drove when working in Saudi Arabia in 1992-1993. The XTERRA is the intimidator of SUVs, looks tough and is tough. It has very good lines, good performance, and the tighest turning radius...probably second to the military version of the Hummer. I very much like the reliability built into the vehicle...get in and go. My XTERRA served me well during the major snow storm last February in Washington DC...I had a blast plowing through snow drifts and going where other vehicles dare not go.

Everything I need, nothing I dont. - 2002 Nissan Xterra
By RacerXterra - October 31 - 12:03 pmMy wife & I purchased the Xterra to replace a 1991 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4x4. Weve logged about 34,000 miles in 3 years. I LOVED my 4Runner, but the Xterra has proven to be superior in every way. It has been a bulletproof mechanical tank [We took a 2,700+ mile road trip last year with no issues or complaints!]. Mileage here in the Denver Area generally averages 17-18 mpg. Im easily able to strap just about anything to the roof rack, like a 10 ft. ladder, many queen size mattresses, & even a 13 ft. Christmas tree! Once I purchased a set of A/T tires, snow/ice performance has been unparalleled by any other vehicle Ive ever driven. Way to go Nissan, youve made a believer out of me!
