This Year's Model Updates:

An industry-first seven-speed automatic transmission is now standard. The navigation system is now DVD-based, and the Keyless Go system is now built into the SmartKey. Newly styled 18-inch wheels are optional.

Pros:
  • Elegantly appointed and spacious cabin, feels nimble for its size, state-of-the-art safety features, strong resale value.
Cons:
  • Complicated COMAND system, not as athletic as some of its competitors, a few low-grade interior materials.

excessive wind noise at 60mph, tyre noise at 70mph. Dealer & MBUSA says the car comes like that. probably design fault. Dealer says all S500 sound like that. Recommend test drive Audi A8L and BMW b4 purchasing MB S500. cannot compare to Audi A8L which is silent at any speed. cruise control stalk gets in the way. steering buttons annoying. soft front seats with poor support.

2004s are "satelite ready" but Mercedes is not saying when the Sirius Satelite radios will indeed be available. And of course the electronics are such that you cant have one installed at your local Tweeter store. You pay for a feature that may never arrive and end up with a system that you cant modify on your own. Only the in dash CD player plays mp3 CDs -not the 6 CD changer in the trunk, which by the way, a Mercedes techical bulliten says jams. Disappointing to say the least. Ill revisit the Phaeton or wait for 2005 to start the search anew.

  • S55 Awesome fun, but not a Lexus - 2004 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

You got to love the driving experience this ride provides its fortunate owner. You also have to appreciate the awesome exterior design and the resulting looks and conversation that breaks out every other time you take it out. But like every large purchase and decision there are drawbacks. I have driven Lexus LS 400s & 430 Ultra Luxuries for years and believe I know quality and great engineering and the Germans just cant compete with Japanese. If only the Japanese could build a heart pumping, hold on for dear-life sport sedan like the S55, I would be with them for life. My wife drives an 05 BMW 745LI or an X5 and the 745 is in the shop every other month. The trade off is worth it!

Most are black or silver. I have white with tan interior. Different color, white, stands out and makes appearance of car look bigger. 493 HP is fantastic for a big sedan!!!

  • Reliability - 2004 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Have owned the S430 - 4matic for about 5 months. Had to send it back to the dealership twice - several days at a time - for warranty defects. Expecting more trips to the workshop as problems have not gone away. The car runs smoothly but performance is not exceptional. Everytime I pass a Lexus LS or BMW 745, I question my purchase.

  • good in rain and snow - 2004 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

I had a s430 and it was a fine car. In the winter the traction was adequate. The s4304matic is much better in snow and rain. The newer model is improved but lacks a cassette player that was previously included. Fuel economy is slightly less. I average 17mpg
