This Year's Model Updates:

Besides the addition of a Special Edition package that bundles together desirable features, the M-Class is unchanged. The complimentary scheduled maintenance program has been dropped for 2005.

Pros:
  • Strong range of engines, extensive array of safety features, comfortable for five, surefooted in bad weather.
Cons:
  • On-road handling surpassed by newer crossover SUVs, expensive for what you get.

  • I bought two! - 2005 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

This is my second M-class car. Living in the Northeast where we get black ice in the winter, I have had excellent performance from this series under terrible road conditions. I traded my heavy four wheel drive pick-up for the heavy M-class. I not only feel secure, but the ride is much more comfortable. Its not the most fuel efficient, but I think its worth the tradeoff.

The 05 ML500 is the last MB suv I will be buying unless MB improves on the 06 ML and GL. MB cannot afford to build the 05 ML500 at todays material prices, hence the cost cutting measures on the 06 models. My main concern is safety. My wife drives the vechile on the interstate 40 miles each way and if I have to put a little extra money into maitenace in the 05ML its well worth it. A little noise and rattle is small price to safety of a loved one.

  • not as bad as they say - 2005 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

this is my 2nd ML and if the fact that I bought it after owning a 99 doesnt tell you I think of them nothing will. Use it in my work in the deserts of Nevada and the mountains of Colorasdo. They have been nothing but exactly what one would expect from a Mercedes.

Mercedes could of made the gas mile. on this a lot better considering that some V8 engines have 18 miles to the gallon like the bmw 745i or the jaguar xj8.

  • So far so good - 2005 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Bought pre-owned in 2007 with 20,000 miles on it. Quite a bit cheaper than a comparable X5, hence the decision for the ML. Added another 20,000 miles to it since then and no problems so far. Paint is peeling off the black window trim in places however. Only real issue was rear seat blower valve which MB fixed at no charge. Service at MB dealer is expensive, but generally in line with BMW, Audi etc. Used to drive a 2001 Jeep GC and the ML is in another league entirely when it comes to handling, traction on snow etc.

  • Sporty Feel - 2005 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Looked at from the outside, this vehicle looks small, but Im impressed by the cargo room. Two large crates for our German Shepherds will fit into the cargo section with rear seats down. Climate control system is superb, with vents in the rear seating area. Im also impressed by the safety features. There are no blind spots. Nice fit and finish all round i.e. no squeaks or rattles, but bear in mind only 3K on the odometer.

  • A Legacy? No ... But fits me well. - 2005 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

05 is the last year for the truck-like frame body, as well as the 5 speed automatic trany. Performs well off- road and in snow. As most other Mercedes, the unique electronically controlled gas paddle will have you looking for others in your mirrors. Car feels somewhat rough on turns even with BAS helping out. If you like extreme ride comfort, get an s- class ... after all you are buying a truck. No 50 mpg for this baby, but not a Hummer either. Both interior and exterior features lack one or two items, but generally satisfying. Overall fun to drive, especially in blizzards. This model is sometimes known for few reliability issues, which are usually covered under warranty. Fun to drive

  • Ho-hum - 2005 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Id have to say that overall I am not that happy with this MB product. It is my first and probably last. The cost cutting features become obvious after the cache of driving a Mercedes wears off. Too many typical MB luxury features were cut out of the "special edition" which would have been more aptly named the "lower class" edition. More enjoyable to own and drive that the comparable ford explorer, but I have also experienced the quick wear of dunlop oem tires and the 25k mile brake job. Should not have to replace ball joint and drive train bearings/valve in under 50k miles. Reliability very disappointing for a $40K plus vehicle. Handling better than expected for a virtual road tank!

  • ML500- Not a Lexus or BMW - 2005 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Squeaky brakes, annoying rattle in the hatch, stiff and sticky gas pedal...all of which the shop foreman has heard before. To fix breaks they will apply an anti-squeal formula for free that will get me through the first year, then what? Check engine light that will not go off...all in the first 5000 miles. Gas mileage is poor but I expected that. Best part is I have to pay for the service intervals....a cost cutting measure in 2005. After seeing all the plastic/rubber on the new 2006 model, I am glad I did not wait. This is my first Mercedes!
