Mazda actually came out with a car that looks nice and is fun to drive. This car actually has good cornering, and acceleration.

  • p5 over 1 year and 25,000 miles later... - 2002 Mazda Protege5

We are a 1-car family and rely on our p5 for everything. We have taken 2 1000+ mi trips in this car and a 2500+ mile trip. All with the baby. Still like the taught suspension and great steering feel. Fun to drive. Easy to drive. Can get around slower traffic with ease. Very stable and safe at higher speeds. Interior is squeak and rattle-free and materials are holding up well. Easy to stay comfy driving long distances. Still get plenty of "cool car" comments! Needs more power and less noise. No mechanical problems. We will probably keep it for 4 more years or up to 2 kids. Over 2 kids, shut up and get a minivan.

  • Nice little hatch - 2002 Mazda Protege5

I dont like those common small cars. It was made in Japan and not as common as other Japanese sedans. I test drove the sedan but didnt like the seats and ride. I bought a Protege5 because it had more comfortable seats and and gave me a little bit of "road feel". The driving experience of the hatch was more closed to my old Saab (Of course the Saab was better). I dont understand why people dont like hatchback. It doesnt have typical noise from a hatchback. The car performs quite good in the city but it is quite noisy at highway speed. The autostick stick is fun but it needs a 5-speed auto instead of a 4-speed auto.

  • Dont want a new car :( - 2002 Mazda Protege5

I LOVE my yellow P5. Bought it used in 03 & Im trying not to cry now that I need a mini van. I love the way it looks, handles, & the room. Even with 3 kids in car seats! Only thing wrong is the paint. Its SO faded, even with weekly baths. I live in Florida, maybe thats why? My shift plate (R D N 2-etc.) is damaged and will cost me $125 to fix, let the next owner do that. My other issue is at 60,000 miles my tranny keeled over. I drive it like I stole it & like a mom. Mazda said it was probably previous owner; it had 27,000 on it after only 1 year. Now at 74,000 it still acts a little funny, hope that tranny stays put. :) But otherwise I LOVE it and still get people asking me about it. My fave car so far!

  • fun to drive, engine keeps you honest - 2002 Mazda Protege5

In another 2 weeks, I will have owned my P-5 for three years. Its been very reliable, gas mileage is decent, and its fun to drive. The only downside, aside from the tire issue, is the lackluster engine performance. My previous car, an Acura Integra, had a very torquey engine. You step on the gas and the car moves. Trying to get the P-5 to accerate out of a turn or pass traffic on a two lane highway is often very frustrating. You have to rev the engine really high to get the car to move with authority, and then the engine is growling like Im some 17 year old punk trying to run grandma off the road. I guess Im getting too old to settle for economy car performance.

  • Practically Fun - 2002 Mazda Protege5

Its amazing how adding a hatch and some spoilers turned the unnoticed Protege into a real looker. Men, women, kids (and insects) all tend to like my Yellow P5. Athletic handling and adequate power match the racy looks. It handles like my 90 Miata, but can haul a lawn mower. It seems that Mazsa build cars with all the reliability and three times the character of Honda and Toyota. Nobody ever asked me about my Corolla at the gas pump. I kind of want some more power and taller gearing. Everything seems to fit and complement each other just so. I am afraid to upset the balance trying to mess with a good thing. Maybe I will grow up and graduate to the new 6 in a few years. Nah!

  • The Best Sports Wagon for the Price - 2002 Mazda Protege5

We bought this in Delaware because none of the NY dealers could/would get us the Vivid Yellow one in the Summer of 2001. Been perfectly reliable and the subject of a great many enquiries at stop lights. Far the best looking vehicle in its class. So much fun to drive it is difficult to keep within the lease miles :-) Handling is great but probably needs more rubber in the front, particularly in the wet. You need to keep the tire pressure correct to maintain the handling. Brakes excellent. Good for tall (63") and short (51") drivers. Plenty of room for the Mother in Law in the back.

I purchased in April, 2002 P5,it is a blast to drive,it does great going uphill in these Colorado mountains,I still need to get used to being so close to the ground, and the higher road noise, overall a great little car for the money...24-27 mpg consistently, plenty of power if driven right, the +,-,tranny is so neat.Do all these low profile cars sound like loose boards when driving over bumpy road,or maybe I need struts?

  • My 2002 Protege 5 - 2002 Mazda Protege5

The car is really fun to drive. I love the option of the manual shift. Performance is great as long as you keep it maintained,(oil chg) Having gone from an SUV to the mazda, was a shock at first, but once I got used to being so low, I now love it! (much better gas milage.) The one thing Im not crazy about is the tires.........they seem to need filled more often, and you can sure tell by the pull when driving. The interior is cheap, but I like the design. (the SUV had all leather) Overall, I would give the car an 8.
