  • Good car, good value - 2002 Mazda Protege5

Ive had the car for two weeks and just passed the 1,000 mile mark. So far, so good. Other than a minor glich with the keyless entry, I have no problems at all to report. Overall the car handles good and looks great. I got the windows tinted and now they look even better. The cargo space is better than I expected for such a small car and the gas mileage is average at best. I got 32 mpg on my first half tank (boy was I excited!), 27 on the second, 28 on the third and 24 on the fourth (reality sets in). The incentives Mazda offered helped in my overall decision to buy this car, otherwise I probably would have bought either a Toyota Matrix or a Pontiac Vibe.

  • Fun, Reliable car to drive with some not so good features - 2002 Mazda Protege5

I bought my car from my brother 4 months ago. It currently has 157k miles on it and it runs great. Just changed the timing belt at 155k and so far its been running like a dream. Its a great affordable commuter car that has some quick speed on turns. Very reliable, every Mazda my family has owned has had 230k+ miles put on it. Definitely will be buying another Mazda after I put another 100k miles on this one!

Fun car to drive, small (enough storage space however) , and easy to get around the city...

I leased this vehicle because with a $19,029 sticker, 1/3 down at 9.5% still came out to $500 a month payment. My credit is very good, and these numbers are the finance departments numbers. I was not crazy about the idea of leasing, but my wife wanted the car. We still purchased the car there because the price was the lowest of any of the Mazda dealers in our area.

  • 7000 miles oh! oh! Engine Light is on! - 2002 Mazda Protege5
    By -

I bought this vehicle in August 2001 and I have loved it, until one week ago. I stopped the vehicle in a gas station and started filling with gas. When I finished, I tried to restart the engine and it was not responding. I tried several times and finally it started as nothing has happened. Today I was driving my car at 25 mph and suddenly boom! an incredible loud noise coming from the engine. The engine light in the console appears. I will take it to the dealer today, to see what happenned. I will keep you informed.

  • My Mazda Protege-5 - 2002 Mazda Protege5

The car drives great. The tires are a bit soft and therefore wear out more quickly. Tires are not good in the snow. Ive had isses with keeping the tires balanced. Car easily skids to the side if making a sharp turn. The drivers seat isnt as comfortable as Id like for my low back support. The steering wheel can be uncomfortable. The wind whistles through the roofrack and can be annoying. Other than that its a great car! :)

  • Very Very Happy - 2002 Mazda Protege5

Im so happy with my Red Protege 5. Many of my friends have Civics, and they feel and look so dull by comparison. Its a fun car to drive, and very versatile car for urban folks like myself. My only complaints are minor, even downright silly, see below. I agonized over the decision, but opted for an automatic instead of a 5 speed. Its still fun as heck to drive though, and the transmission seems to always shift exactly when it should.

  • NEW ENGINE - 2002 Mazda Protege5

ON MY WAY TO WORK, MY REAR WINDOW BE- CAME VERY DIRTY. ALSO THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON. BY LUNCH TIME MY ATTEMPT TO GO TO THE DEALER FAILED & I WAS PUSHED & HAD TO BE TOWED. DEALER INFORM ME THAT ALL OIL PRESSURE IN THE ENGINE WAS GONE & A NEW ENGINE IS BEING INSTALLED (THANK G-D FOR THE WARRANTY) AS WE SPEAK. SOMETHING AINT RIGHT!!!!

A great looker and handles the road awesome. Comfortable seats and has enough legroom and headroom(even with sunroof). A couple minor gripes are that there are no cupholders in the rear and the ones in the front are not very deep. Could use some pockets on back of front seats. No choice in the interior colors. Some people complain about lack of power. Seems enough for me especially going from 0 - 40.
