  • We Luv our Maz - 2002 Mazda Protege5

Bought this car from new - 3 years and 40,000 miles ... nothing has gone wrong with it. Everything about it feels just right. Great for zooming around town but the often quoted lack of power is only noticed out on open country roads. Forget about the automatic - you just have to have the manual shift to get the most fun out of this car - it loves to rev. Love the looks from the front but never really got used to the hatchback end (ps. its not a wagon). Problems: clutch judder when cold but it hasnt got any worse since new, slightly gruff noise from engine for the first minute in the morning, stock Goodyears were very prone to potentially lethal aquaplaning.

We chose our blue beauty over a Subaru Legacy, which was my wifes idea. She got it right. It actually has more rear seat legroom than the Legacy, handles better, and we can fit a stroller and a kids bike in the back with the hatch closed. I love how sharp the handling is, the styling is lights out, the functionality is superb (use the car for dump runs for two families with no problems), and reliability has been relatively up to expectation. Both headlights had to be replaced, which was surprising. Didnt have to do that on my 11 year old Altima. Overall, would recommend this car for any small family (we have 2 small kids).

  • I call my P5 Little Zippy - 2002 Mazda Protege5

I bought this car used 4.5 years ago and I couldnt be happier. I did a lot of research before hand and this car just completely blew away the competition in safety, looks, and pure driving enjoyment. My husband is used to his truck, but even he loves the pep of this car. Now that gas has skyrocketed, Im getting an even better deal, averaging 27 mpg in town/30 hwy. I dumped the standard sport tires after replacing each one twice in short order. They are super responsive, but very expensive and low longevity. I replaced a broken thermometer on it about 15 months ago (~$90 with labor) and that has been my only cost, other than reg. maintenance.

  • An excellent choice! - 2002 Mazda Protege5

When compared to the Matrix and Civic EX, the Pro5 wins out. The Pro5 has a high quality, sporty interior, a unique exterior, and drives great. The Matrixs interior isnt as nice or sporty, lacks handling, but has similar accel. and more space. The Civic EX has equal quality, standard ABS and SR, but lacks in accel./handling. The Pro5s accel. is more than adequate when compared to others in its class and the handling is superb!

  • P5, not your fathers station wagon - 2002 Mazda Protege5

A great car, fun to drive, nice to look at. I keep telling my wife a bought a station wagon, she says it is a sports car, who is right, maybe both of us. Some people say it could use more power, but for everyday driving it has more than enough.

  • Love My Protege5 - 2002 Mazda Protege5

This is an excellent vehicle. I dont think it is underpowered like the press does. I think the styling is better than the Matrix or Vibe. I have removed the roof rack, and the ride, noise, and gas mileage improved considerably. I have noticed a rattle in the front passenger door. On the plus side, I find the seats to be very comfortable. Given the wheelbase, wheel and tires, and suspension, the ride is somewhat harsh but the handling is excellent. Note that the tires develop a slight flat spot after 24 hours and need 5 minutes of driving for the ride to smooth out, so dont judge the ride before that point. I would buy this vehicle again in a second!

  • Perfect! - 2002 Mazda Protege5

We are very happy with the car. It is the perfect combination of cost, capability and fun-to-drive. It gets plenty of looks, and there arent many around in my area so it has some exclusivity. There were a few car that I thought about waiting for.. the Matrix/Vibe, the SE-R Spec-V, and even the Altima. Im glad I didnt wait. Those cars have all come in at higher price points, or have been disapointing in some way. My Pro5 was $17.5k out the door, and I cant think of ANY car Id rather have at that price.

  • Still lovin my MP5 - 2002 Mazda Protege5
    By -

I have had my black MP5 for over a month and I still love driving it. I have heard a lot of knocks against the HP, and I admit a little more would be good, but I like the 130hp, because it is more than the vehicle I had before so it is an upgrade for me. People have asked me what kind of car it is, and some are suprised when I tell them it is a Mazda Protege5. I have received lots of looks and lots of complements. This car has given me a renewed interest in driving.

  • Great Wagon - 2002 Mazda Protege5

At the time I need a new vehicle after mine was destroyed in an accident, it was the only foreign wagon available. After owning it for almost a year, Im even more certain I made the right choice.

  • Quick hatchback with a lot of room - 2002 Mazda Protege5
    By -

Ive had the P5 for about 5 months now and really think it is a great little car. The engine is peppy and with the 5 speed is quick enough for most city and highway driving. Gas mileage is okay (around 27 mpg mixed driving). We have the sunroof and roof rack on and have never noticed the so called whistle like some others have, even going above 75 mph. We really like the room this car has. It is surprising just how much stuff can fit in the cargo area (similar to the Protege Sedan trunk in terms of surprise). We also liked the fact that we could put two car seats in with our seats back and travel in comfort for a 6 hour drive.
