  • Great Car, Terrible Electrical System - 2002 Mazda Protege5
    By -

After looking at all the other cars in this category (subaru outback, toyota matrix, ford focus), I chose the Mazda Protege 5. It seemed like the best-made car of my choices. I also heard Mazda a good reputation for reliability and service. I enjoyed my car a great deal for the first year, but then I started to experience electrical trouble. If my car sits for more than 2-3 days, the battery is dead the next time I try to drive it.

  • The Golf Wagon - 2002 Mazda Protege5

Upon retirement I wanted to replace my Explorer with a sporter car. One that would carry 2 sets of clubs, a push cart and luggage. Vacation and golf were 2 things that was on my mind. I found that in my 02 Mazda Protege 5. I could not have been happier. I dont know if I like the body style of the new 5, but I love the looks of my car.

This was my first new car and wow,not what I was expecting. The 2.0 four cylinder feels more like a six, maybe thanks to the five speed attached to it. Handling that feels like a little sports car, thats what my insurance company said too. Great audio system and overall lovability. But like most cars it couldnt handle black top, but loved ashalt and black top is where i wrecked it, thus loved and lost.

I just bought my Mazda, used of course, and I just love it. Something about the Protege5 that has everything I need. Sleek look, great for towing and moving, fun to drive. I love it! I just wish they made newer models.

  • perfect for me - 2002 Mazda Protege5

Not the fastest acceleration in the world, but between cargo space, comfort, quality, HANDLING, and style this car is perfect. It also comes very equipped at a very good price.

Ive owned this car since 2003. So far no major work. Just oil and tune up and I have 196500 on it. Love that car and the way it drove. I say drove because the guy I was dating totaled it out. Im now looking for another car. Hoping to get one just like it. But I did have trouble with the headlights having to be replaced pretty frequently. I would recommend this car to young and old. Its fun and reliable.

  • Still Happy after 60K miles - 2002 Mazda Protege5

Bought my car new back in 2001 and have enjoyed it thoroughly. A blast to drive in day to day driving (great handling). Replaced the tires at 40K with Firestone Fusions (uprated to 205mm) which fixed the poor wet weather traction of the Dunlops. A couple of common minor gripes: burned out headlight bulbs (4 so far - what is up with that?), wind noise from the roof rack is present, passenger window rolls up more slowly than drivers side, and had to replace the coil to correct an engine miss. Overall, the car has been a joy to own. I get 28-30 mpg routinely, can fit 4 adults comfortably, and haul a bunch of stuff as needed. Add good looks and great handling and you have a real winner. =)

This is a super fine car for the money. I think I paid about 19,000 fully loaded. It turns heads even on Miami Beach where everyone has a fine car. Only thing this car needs is more horsepower. Other than that it beats spending $30,000 on a BMW 3 series that everyone has.

  • alarm too sensitive - 2002 Mazda Protege5
    By -

Love the car! But, avoid a real pain in the butt and have the dealership reset the alarm sensitivity before you drive off the lot. We bought ours on a friday and spent half the weekend babysitting the WAY oversensitive alarm system, and half the weekend with the horn fuse pulled. Check sensitivity by tapping-kicking the tires. We have since been informed (by a salesman at another Mazda dealership) that the P-5 comes set at maximum sensitivity and needs to be reset to the lowest level.
