I just bought my 2004 Mazda3 s last week, but Ive already driven it over 1000 miles on a trip. My first impression of the car was great, its sleek and drives well. The only issues Ive had with it are that the driver seat seems to be made for tall people with long arms. When I push the seat back so that your foot is a good distance from the pedals, I have to hold my arms out straight to hold the wheel. I also bought this car not realizing that the 2.3 L engine didnt get very good gas mileage. I was hoping to improve over my V6 mustang, but the mpg is only slightly better. But I like the way it drives, and I think it will be a great car for me.

  • Mazda3 Pretty Decent Vehicle - 2004 Mazda Mazda3

I was suspect not having owned such a small car, as a daily driver, for over twenty years. I was also suspect about the Ford connection with Mazda. So far, I havent had any concerns and I can be pretty picky. The car delivers 23MPG with mixed driving and about 27-28 MPG strictly highway. The automatic tranny is fine and I have the slapstick manual option which is nice. I am wondering how it will handle New England winters, especially with 17" speed-rated tires. The vehicle does have one quirk; in idle, the heat vents blow cold air, even with a warm engine. When moving, the heat is strong. Makes it difficult to warm up the car in the morning since it only will blow cold until driving.

  • Got Problems? - 2004 Mazda Mazda3

Ive had the car for close to a year now. Yesterday was my 5th or 6th check engine light. If it is anything like the others it will be a problem with the evap system. The gas mileage isnt as good as I had expected. I am averaging 23mpg and on a good tank 25mpg. These issues have been disappointing. That being said, I really like this car. It is fun to drive. In the first few months I would volunteer to go to the store for my wife. We have even had races to get into the drivers seat first. The red sparkles at the right angle. It has muscular contours, very attractive. I have looked at "luxury" cars and dont feel like I am missing anything, especially my money. This car wants to be driven.

  • More Room, Less Zoom Zoom - 2004 Mazda Mazda3

I bought my 3s to replace my totaled 626. A desire for better fuel econony and performance drove me to the 3s over the Mazda6, which had a reputation for being unreliable.Ive owned the car for exactly four months, drive 40mi daily. Im 510" and in good shape. But, no amount of seat/steering wheel adjustment has rendered a comfortable driving position. I cant find a comfortable spot for my right leg with the tapered design of the center console. The two lane black top I test drove the car on proved what a quick, nimble fun-to-drive winner Mazda created. But, I spend most of my time in rush hour traffic at 15mph. Never wouldve guessed this woould happen. So I gave it to my "dainty" wife.

I like to compare it to my friends new Jetta. Of course he paid alot more and cant control his radio from the steering wheel as I pull away from him!

  • Hatchback great small package - 2004 Mazda Mazda3

I purchased my mazda3 right on the spot when I sat inside. I had been looking at small cars for 2 weeks, Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Suzuki and Huyndai. The interior build quality and the added features that are standard made the decision for me. not to mention the room in the hatchback. The rear gate lifts almost straight up and out of the way. The cargo configurations are plentiful and my two dogs ride great with the seats flipped forward. Although I am 64", I fit without the tight feeling I felt in many of the other cars I tried. The guages are excellent and the sporty interior is very pleasing. The engine was a surprise in the fact that I felt as though I was driving a 6 cylinder.

  • Nice Little Sedan - 2004 Mazda Mazda3

I currently have 2 Mazdas in my driveway; a Protege 5 and a 3 sedan. Why? Because Mazda builds a great car for the money. Fun to drive, handsome, decently built, well equipped; whats not to like? Yes, my new 3 has a rattle in the door to be looked into and some parts of the car are executed better than others, but the sum of these parts is simply not to be beat at its price point. More soul than a Honda or a Toyota, fewer quirks and better reliability than a Subaru, less over-the-top styling than a Nissan, WAY more reliability than a VW: in short, Mazda is on to something. Vroom-Vroom!!

Gorgeous car (in 5 door form). Vette drivers stare. The metallic Velocity Red Mica paint is stunning in sunlight or other strong lights... it burns with orange fire highlights. Lacks a bit of Protege5 visual character, but is much more refined. Driving it is very pleasant. Handling is very good up to the limit, but then it becomes vague. Engine is so quiet, using auto-manual mode requires watching the tach. Weak, thirsty engine. A/C is weak.
