This Year's Model Updates:

For 2003, power sliding doors are an option for both the LX and ES trim levels. A towing package and a cargo organizer are two other new options. Also, an alarm and engine immobilizer are now part of a security package, and a cassette player is available on the ES trim level. The LX trim now rides on 16-inch wheels. Inside, floor and cargo mats are now standard on both trim levels, while outside, you'll see a new exhaust tip.

Pros:
  • Compact and maneuverable, confident handling manners, roll-down windows in the sliding doors.
Cons:
  • Limited maximum cargo capacity, lacks some features found in the other minivans.

Much more fun to drive than my 98 caravan, still fits the 2 kids and dog just fine. horizontal sliding mid-seats a clever idea. es model w/ gfx pkg gets a lot of looks, which i am not used to in a mini- van. i think ill keep this one for a while.

  • Easy Choice - 2003 Mazda MPV

I spent 3 months evaluating my next car purchase. I considered the KIA Sedona and Sorento, Honda CRV and Odessy, and more. KIA was eliminated for their horrible gas mileage (who needs that in this day and age?), Honda for their sub-par warranties and their inflated prices, and Toyota for lack of space. After test driving the Tribute and the MPV, the only choice left was - which one?The MPV was so much more fun to drive than the Tribute. (Maybe my husband will trade in his Tahoe?) I just cant wait to take it on a long trip! I opted for an after market moonroof and in-the-headrest DVD system for the kids. Still kept the price below 22K!!

  • Nice van for the family - 2003 Mazda MPV

Ive been across the USA in the van, with my wife and 3-children. There was plenty of room for our stuff. It was a comfortable drive and ride. There are some creature comforts that could be added, based upon what were used to with our other vehicle, a VW Jetta with the works. But all in all, its a nice van, equal to the Honda van in performance, handling and comfort, and, with a sticker price comparable to the Honda, about $3,500 less in price (rebate applied.) I highly recommend it.

  • Wow! Im Impressed - 2003 Mazda MPV

Weve had our Mazda now for about a month and it has been on two road trips. I love the design, size and flexibility of the interior. The ride seems a little harsh, but I previously drove a big American sedan which was pretty plush. My 2-year-old daughter loves that she can see out of the huge rear windows. The rear air easily handles the South Carolina summer heat. This is a really, really good van!

We purchased our MPV online through Carsdirect.com which was itself a 5- star experience. Mazda was offering 0% financing at the time which sealed the deal for us, but we really liked the overall package Mazda offers with the MPV. We researched several mini-vans before deciding on the MPV. The only real concern we had with the MPV was the interior room, but Mazda did an incredible job with their design. We estimate we saved at least $5000 by avoiding the popular Honda Oddysey and we really believe we found the best value all thing considered.

  • 2003 Honda Beater - 2003 Mazda MPV

The LX is an unbelievable deal. I dont understand Hondas justification for unwavering from their ridiculous MSRP, but they made my decision easy. The Mazda fits the bill just as well, if not better for thousands less. With near invoice pricing, rebate, and low APR, I drove away several thousand less than a comparably equipped Honda. Build quality, power, handling are impeccable. 7/8 size meets my family needs and fits in the garage great. Agree with another writer that I dont know why there arent more on the road...

  • A great car - 2003 Mazda MPV

We bought our MPV new and it has been a great car. I like the exterior design and size. Honda and Toyota went bigger in 2003 leaving Mazda with this smaller size which is more agile and I think a sleeker design. The driving experience with this Mazda is surprising: it really is almost sporty, in any event very responsive. My only beef with this vehicle is the shifter sort of gets in the way of the controls on the dash board. Other than that, the moter runs like a top with enough power. At 74k miles now, the transmission seems like it might be acting differently, but no actual problems. After 8 years though Im afraid my wife wants "something new" so I may look around. But a great car.

  • Great Van - 2003 Mazda MPV

As a previous owner of minivans, I found the MPV to be a very well designed Minivan and it seems that they thought of everything. There is no timing belt to change and that is important as this is an interference engine which means if your timing belt breaks or jumps you will bend valves. The flip down rear seat, radio controls on the steering wheel, large and nemerous drink holders, thick leather interior and power sliding doors are among my favorite features. Get the power sliding doors. They are worth the money. At first I wasnt going to get them but I worked the dealer lower on the price of the van that had them. Buy one, you will be glad you did.

  • Mazda MPV truly does go ZOOM with style. - 2003 Mazda MPV

Have been shopping for a while when I started looking at the MPV. I drove one for a day and feel in love. I had been driving a 2002 Explorer. The MPV moves into traffic very quickly. The handling is very impressive. I was also very surprised at the fit and finish. It put my Explorer to shame. For a relatively speaking inexpensive vehicle it is a lot of car of the money....

  • The best van for automotive enthusiasts - 2003 Mazda MPV
    By -

The Mazda MPV is grossly underrated by automotive writers because of their reverence for the Honda Odyssey. When my wife and I test drove the MPV and Odyssey back-to-back, we expected to be impressed by the Odyssey but we were stunned by its clumsy handling and braking. The MPV handles, maneuvers, and brakes about as well as our 98 Honda Accord EX. In contrast, the Odyssey is ponderous, handles sluggishly, and fishtails under hard braking. The MSRP of the MPV is overpriced relative to the Odyssey. Fortunately, Mazda continually offers incentives. We paid $1500 under invoice.
