This Year's Model Updates:

An all-new model last year, the Mazda CX-9 cruises into 2008 with a heavily revised engine that increases output by 10 horsepower and 21 pound-feet of torque. A blind-spot warning system also debuts on the Grand Touring trim level.

Pros:
  • Strong performance and handling, stylish and roomy cabin, easy access to third row, solid build quality, high crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Long rear doors can be hard to open in tight parking spaces, 20-inch wheels give a stiff ride on concrete freeways, stingy interior storage.

  • What gas mileage do you expect? - 2008 Mazda CX-9

This car is so fun to drive. The interior is comfortable and versatile, the engine and transmission are silky smooth, the climate control, seat configuration, styling, and Bose stereo are awesome. I get 19-20 mpg in mixed driving and dont understand why this large 7-person vehicle continually gets knocked on gas mileage. Sure, if you take off from every stop like a jackrabbit, youll get 15mpg, but cmon. I hate cars, and I hated the minivan I replaced with the CX-9, but I love driving this one.

  • Finally found it - 2008 Mazda CX-9

Ive been considering an SUV for quite some time but having driven sports cars and sports sedans all my life I wasnt quite happy with anything out there. When I finally got serious about looking last year I considered just about everything on the market from the Isuzu to the Lexus. I was surprised to find Mazda had an entry large enough for my needs and pleased to find the array of options and accessories to match up with almost any of the others. After a month and a half and 2500 miles, Im happier with my choice than when I first got it. I would recommend anyone looking for a mid to large size SUV look into this car.

I love this car! I cant get over how much bang I get for my buck. Mazda produced a refined and beautifully designed car inside and out with all of the high-tech gadgets I would expect in a $40,000+ car. Look out Acura, Lexus, and Infiniti. Before I bought the CX9, I had compared it with the Ford Edge, Acura RDX, Acura MDX, and even the Mazda CX7. In the end, the CX9 was a no- brainer. The exterior styling looks aggressive. The interior styling is gorgeous. The CX9 has virtually all of the same features as the Acura MDX, but for $1000s less. I liked the power and handling of the CX7, but I preferred the cargo capacity, options, and fuel economy of the CX9.

  • Dare to compare - look out Lexus! - 2008 Mazda CX-9

Bought the GT AWD and got an awesome deal. Dare I compare this to the Lexus or Infiniti SUV offerings? Absolutely yes. Interior quality and materials are great. E.G. padded armrests on doors. Nice. The cargo space whips the luxury class models. Features? Navigation, backup camera, proximity key, Bluetooth, moonroof, memory seats with powered lumbar support, iPod jack, powered tailgate, rain-sensing wipers, tri-zone a/c, blind spot monitoring! For under $40K you CAN have it all. I got the white pearl exterior.

  • Wowed by the Zoom Zoom - 2008 Mazda CX-9

As a crossover, I am fully impressed with the CX-9 GT. Fast, handles like a sports car on turns and acceleration, yet comfortable and roomy. You can go race it on the highway or take your wife out to the opera in it... not that I do. Gas mileage isnt that great, but then again it is a high performance 3.7L engine with AWD. Not bad when you factore that into the equation. We are so impressed, we will get another one after this lease expires and I am buying a MSP3. Bravo Mazda!

  • Great Choice! - 2008 Mazda CX-9

In deciding on a second car, I did a lot of research over a 6 month period. To be honest, Mazda never even entered the discussion initially until two months ago! Truth be told, in test driving the Toyota Highlander, Lexus RX 330, Honda Pilot and GMC Acadia, the CX-9 had them all beat. The ride was incredible. Power when I needed it and agility when necessary are the atrributes that made the CX-9 stand above the rest in this category. While the review is true about the stiffness with the 20" wheels, its not as bad as the review potentially paints it. Interior and Exterior stylings are very, very nice! - This car makes people do double takes! (Especially the Grand Touring model!)

Its no mini-van but has all of the positives of one. Three rows of seating. Its no truck but tows like one. Its not an SUV but the AWD makes sure you go anywhere you want. Its not really a sports car but is fun to drive like one. Its just a fantastic vehicle that does it all. I didnt lose style, fun or multi-use. Better gas mileage than a truck/suv.

  • MPG Only Complaint - 2008 Mazda CX-9

1600 miles into our 2008 Touring CX-9, AWD option has already paid for itself in a brutal start to winter, even by Michigan standards. Decided on Touring over Grand Touring because 18 in. wheels/tires produce a much less jittery and more comfy ride than the 20 inchers on our cratered, suburban Detroit roads. The vehicle strikes a wonderful ride comfort/handling balance, providing agility, flat cornering, responsive transmission and steering while not punishing occupants on bad roads. I am surprised by the lack of a mpg computer. While not expecting hybrid-like fuel economy, I am very disappointed by the 12.6 mpg experienced thus far--can only hope this improves as break-in progresses!

  • Pleasantly Surprised! - 2008 Mazda CX-9

Never thought about owning a Mazda. Test drove an Infiniti FX35 and compared to the Mazda CX-9 it was so much smoother and really has a lot of power. I was really impressed. You get so much more for your money with this model. Love the way it handles and my daughter loves having the DVD system. That was just an added bonus for us. Only had it a few days, but so far it has been great!

  • Best 3rd CUV on the market for the price - 2008 Mazda CX-9
    By -

I chose among Highlander, Pilot and CX9. Pilot is too ugly for my taste. Highlander is too expensive with ultra-cheap 3rd row and non-splittable. CX9 is the best deal out there. I was worrying about the reliability like most potential buyers would be. No problem for me after 1 year. Mazda service in my area is also superb. Loaners for repairs (TSB, etc.) and major services. The bottom like is that CX9 drives like a BMW X5 with more than $20K saved in your bank.
