This Year's Model Updates:

The Sorento is an all-new SUV from Kia. Larger and more powerful than the pint-size Sportage (which is expected to return for 2004 after a 2003 hiatus, by the way), the Sorento straddles the emerging middle ground between small SUVs and midsize SUVs. And it does so while offering interested buyers true off-road ability. Key competitors are the Ford Escape, the Honda CR-V, the Jeep Liberty, the Nissan Xterra and the Toyota Highlander.

Pros:
  • Great value, class-leading warranty coverage, long list of standard features, solid construction, true off-road capability.
Cons:
  • Engine needs more power, subpar fuel economy, seat upholstery could stand improvement.

  • My review - 2003 Kia Sorento

Ive had my Sorento since mid-June 2003, and have gotten anywhere from 16.5 mpg to 20 mpg with no problems after 6500 miles. In fact several people were impressed with the ride. My wife likes it (she hasnt driven it yet, but her only complaint is that its hard for her to get in (shes 52").

Car only has 2500 miles but so far so good. Small defects found in fit and finish of interior - minor fixes to be done during first service. Ride excellent on 1 long trip. Gas mileage better than sticker - 22 - 23 mpg highway on silver grade fuel at 75 to 80 mph. City mileage 19 - 20. Love the EX luxury package for the price. Looked at Suzuki XL-7, Ford Escape, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Suburu Outback, Honda CR-V,and Land Rover Discovery. Based on price dependence we chose the KIA. Price independent choice was the Land Rover. Dealership experience was very good.

  • A Kia??? - 2003 Kia Sorento

I traded my BMW for a Kia! WHAT? Thats right a Kia. It still hard for me to say but I am very impressed with the Sorento. When my wife first said "Kia", I said NO WAY! but after the test drive I was sold. Just try to find another fully loaded mid-size SUV for what you will pay for you Sorento. If you have any doubts about buying a Kia, just test drive the Sorento. We bought a EX 4x2 loaded! for less then $25k We havent had it very long but so far so good, We love it! You cant beat 10/100000 warranty.

After a test drive and a very comfortable experience at the dealership we were sold. They even arranged for a test drive of a competitors vehicle for us, pretty gutsy. If we were looking for good gas mileage it would not have been a good pick, but we wanted a safe vehicle for out of town travel in all kinds of weather. The Sorento is a beautiful vehicle to drive, very quiet with large comfortable seats, enough power for my needs so far and works well in bad road conditions. We drove several SUVs and found the Sorento as good as any,it has excellent standard equipment that are options on most other SUVs.

So far so good (KNOCK ON WOOD) I am reading tons of negative about KIA after my purchase and that scares me. However, at 3K (not much) and not any problems. Rides nice, nice stadard equipment, enough get up and go power in traffic (not towing anything though) The dealers are not as nice after the purchase though and this is bothering me...

  • After all these years...love my Sorento - 2003 Kia Sorento

I saw my new Kia at the local dealer and was immediately impressed with the design. After hearing it was a KIA I was a bit concerned, I knew nothing about the brand. I test drove and did my research, took the plunge and have been very pleased. I now have nearly 50K miles on her and Im so impressed with the reliability. Not a thing has gone wrong in 3 years. My Sorento has been inexpensive to maintain as well. Overall this was a fantastic buy, especially at the $24K price tag.

  • GOOD SO FAR - 2003 Kia Sorento

I recently purchased a used 03 Kia Sorento LX. I have only had it a month. Over all, "so far" I am satisfied with it. There are a few flaws however; at high speeds (anything over 50) the steering wheel shakes a bit, you can feel it in the steering, in the seats, and in the floor board and it does it even worse when using the brakes. But I do enjoy the interior and exterior design, similar to a Lexus SUV for far less price! Oh and a very quiet ride. All in all I would say to anyone considering buying a Sorento it is an excellent choice for the money!

we love our sorento for its looks, power, drivability and comfort. only problems have been a horn replaced under warranty and one head lamp had to be replaced which i did myself and found it to be quite easy. the quality has been excellent so far and routine service from our dealer has been great. we would highly recommend this vehicle for its value and quality.only compaint if you would call it that is lower than desired mileage! all in all a gray suv!!

  • Great Vehicle so far - 2003 Kia Sorento

I love this SUV! Bought it 2 weeks ago and so far so good. Its sporty looks bring to mind the Lexus RX300 without the price tag. I have been pleasantly surprised by the handling and ride. The engine is not as responsive as I would like, but is adequate. The interior is well thought out and I am very comfortable with the layout. I have an EX loaded with the Luxury package, ABS, Load Leveling, etc. Considering the price (roughly 27K), the price is untouchable by comparible models (even with rebates).

  • Sorento Squeaks! - 2003 Kia Sorento
    By -

Our sorento has started squeaking now with the cold weather. It appears to be the belts. We took it into the dealer 3 times thus far, the last time we took it in they replaced all the belts and made the comment, "Some cars do it and some cars dont, and if it keeps doing it well just have to live with it". Sorry, but KIAs customer SATISFACTION is way under par. -JB
