This Year's Model Updates:

Finally replacing the boxy Cherokee that has been in production since 1984, the handsome all-new 2002 Jeep Liberty serves as the affordable SUV in Jeep's lineup. Borrowing styling cues from the 1997 Jeep Dakar and 1998 Jeepster concept vehicles, the Liberty is available in two trim levels with your choice of two- or four-wheel drive, a four- or six-cylinder engine and a manual or automatic transmission.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Thirsty at the gas pump, not as "car-like" as most of its competitors.

  • Very off-road in the dealership - 2002 Jeep Liberty

My jeep has had nothing but problems. It has been in the shop more then on the road. I bought the car because I liked the looks of the car. I never thought my new car would have so many problems such as electrical problems, radio problems, coolant and so on……. The car needs a bigger gas tank. The gas mileage is very low so you are filling up all time. Why not put a bigger gas tank in it? However, after all my complaints about the car my mother has a Jeep Sport and her car is fine. She has had no problems what so ever. I got a LEMON!!!

  • Unsafe GAS GUZZLER - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Shock tower bolt on right front was not tightened down at factory, this caused a clunking sound at any speed and wandering.I wonder if any other bolts or nuts are loose??? This Jeep drinks gas like a miniture Boeing 747. I will trade this unit off next Spring and the word JEEP will never be on another title of mine!!!!of

  • rollover - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I have had problems with the Jeeps skidding on even slightly wet pavement; replacing the tires with the best all-weather Michelins did not help. The steering is very sensitive, which does not help. I did have a rollover with this car, and was able to walk away, but the Jeep was totaled.

  • Scary to drive - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Good looking vehicle that makes me nervous to drive on paved roads. The brakes and suspension are not well tuned to street driving. No confidence whatsoever in maneuvering this truck in urban or freeway driving. Brakes take forever to slow it down, and in the event that you need to avoid an obstacle youre better off plowing into it rather than trying to turn. I drove a Cherokee previously, and the big difference seems to be the added weight of the Liberty. The weak 3.7 V6 moves this boat slower than a 10 year old Civic. Not recommended for people that enjoy driving. Look for a used RX300 instead.

  • Engine Problems - 2002 Jeep Liberty

Ive owned my car for 2 years and Im having to have the cylinder heads replaced. I have 27,000 miles on my car. I would not buy another Jeep!

  • A Sure Footed Lemmon - 2002 Jeep Liberty
    By -

Hmm, lets see, replaced the body control module, $600; three power windows, $400 each, power steering pump $450, rear wiper $400, engine (should have never done it) $5,000. When they told me it would be $2,500 for a new catalytic converter, I bought an 2008 Civic. Priceless. I loved the idea of my Liberty -- hated the reality.
